Be it knowh that I, DARIUS GALLAGHER, u citizen lof the United Statesof'America, residing at New vYork city, inthe county of New York and State ofv N ew York, have invented 'certain new andfus'e'ful Improvements in Fontain-Pens, of which the'followinga,` isl :1 -specification; reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin i .This invention relates to thatela' of fountain'penswhich arefcomposed of three main sections, the. .pen-point section, the reservoir section and the point protecting section, which when/assembled constitutethe ordinary lstylographic writing pen. .Such pens when .empty of' ink necessitate the u11-, screwing and removal of the pen-point section to o en the reservoir section so. that it can be lied; by a-dropper lor, otherwise. Heretofore it has been proposed `to provide the reservoir sectionwith a cap protector having. the characteristics of a suction-bulb which when removed from over'thepen point could be applied tothe opposite end of the pen to draw the 'ink up through the point of the holderv into the. reservoir and therebyr fill it by suction after the manner of an-ordinary dropper. 'i' t The object of my device is to overcome many of the objectionable yfeatures of,such combined fillers and point-protectors bycer- Vtain peculiar features and combinations to be more fully described hereinafter and pointed out' in the claims. n

`In-'the accompanying drawings, Figure' 1 represents a' sideelevation wherein my improvements are also shown in longitudinalV section with the parts arrangedin open ad-V justment and coupled ready for fill-ing, and Fig. 2, the same kind of a view `wherein the parts are shown .in closed adjustment readvr for writing or to be'V placed' andcarried in the pocketof-the user. v

The numeral 1 indicates a .tubular reservoir and pen-holdingsection,c2 a substan tially cylindrical-elongated hollow cap section, and 3 .a combinedpoint cover'and suction bulb. The reservoir section l, is prof vided with a reduced half 4 having external threads l5 commencing at a shoulder 6 and extending toward the end of the section for about half'an. inch or more in order to make a-tightjoint when the cap section is applied. The end4 of section 1 isclosed by an integralA end-Wall 7 with the exception oa small vent 8 located slightly to one side of; the longitudinal axis -of' thev sectiomv The 'cap section. 2 vis* internally threaded to lscrevnoli to thc external threads. 5 of the reservoir; and is given an interior diameter which allows it to loosely'telescope over the reduced half l of thegreservoir. The external diameter of the cap section 2 is the same as that of 'the main portion of the reservoir tvvh'ereby, when the two sections are coupledtogetherr their outer surfaceswill be smooth and flushwith each other to provide the 'usual symmetrical pen holder. f The means for filling the pen consists of thel detachable. suction bulb 3 which ts over the end of cap section 2, and when compressed, forces 'the' air o'ut of the bulb through a hole/10 in the head of the cap, and thence through the vent tout through the reseryoir when the parts are in open adjustment as seen in Fig. 1 lVhen pressure is removed from the bulb a contrary action will ensue and sucky the ink up into the reservoir, it being understood thatthe end of thereservoir 1 is-,irst immersed in ink.' In this operation the action' is precisely like that of anr ordinaryglass tube and Vbulb dropper. This mode, however, of filling a fountain pen is old and well'known to the art. Alplug 11 on 'the end of thereservoir' enters the hole r10- inthe cap and closes it againstv leakage or the entrance of dust and dirtwhich might otherwise work into the ink while the' pen is in onespocket. `My lcombined pen cover and suction bulb 3 is substantially.cylindrical andis by preference made ofy resilient rubber glazed upon the. outsidey with a suitable enamel and adapted vto Vfit over lthe cap section 2.
