To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ADAM J. HAR'IW'ICK, citizen of the United States, residing at Clarks Summit, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards for Jointers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a guard adapted to be attached to the table of a jointer, the object of the invention being first to provide a guard which may be turned down into place over the jointer knives, or turned to a position entirely out of the way; and second to provide a guard which may be bodily moved transversely of the jointer table, to a position either in front of or at the rear of the gage plate, and which may be readily attached to an ordinary jointer without alteration in the mechanism thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following de scription and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to these figures, A designates the table of a jointer of any usual construction, B the rotatable cutter head, C a transverse slot through which the knives thereon extend, D the laterally shiftable gage, and F the set screws whereby the gage is adjusted, passing through the slots it). All this portion of the construction is common to joint.- ing machines, and forms no part of my invention.
My invention relates to a guard which is attached to one end of the table and which is foldable down upon the table so as to cover the slot C and the cutting head contained therein, or to be moved up and entirely away from the table. The guard consists of two members 2 and 3 hingedly connected to each other. The member 2 is relatively fixed, except that it may have a lateral adjustment, as will be later described, and the hinged member 3 is enlarged at the end, as at 4t, to form a covering plate having a width nearly equal to the length of the slot C so that when the cover plate is down in the position shown in Fig. l, the slot will be entirely or almost entirely covered. This enlarged portion 4 of the member 3 1s remforced transversely by wedge-shaped rcinforcing piece 4t which is set in a slot in the upper face of the portion a, th portion t being of wood. This reinforce prevents the enlarged portion at from splitting or warping. The portion 2 of the guard attached at its extremity to a downwardly extending slide block 5 which is formed upon its inner face with the inwardly projecting dovetailed rib 6 which engages in a dovetailed groove in a transverse guide member 7 which is bolted or otherwise attached to the downwardly extending flange a of the table A. it will thus be seen that the slide block 5 is engaged with the member 7 at all times and cannot be removed therefrom, except by moving the block 5 past the end of the member 7. In order to prevent accidental removal of the block 5, and yet permit the block to be detached from the member 7, I provide at each end of the member 7 the projecting stop pins 9 which are preferably screwed into the member 7 so to be detached, and 1 form the slide block 5 with a downwardly projecting lug 8 which is adapted to contact with the pins 9 and thus limit the movement of the block While I have shown the member 2 and the block 5 as being made in separate pieces fastened together, it will be understood that I may make both of the parts in one, without in any manner departing from the spirit of the invention.
hen in use, the guard is down in the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the enlarged portion 4: covers the slot C in the bed plate. \Vhen, however, it is desired to use the machine, the hinged arm 3 may be turned over upon the fix member 2, as in Fig. 2. As
shown 1n Fig. 3, when the gage plate I) is moved toward the front of the machine, the guard may be shifted to the back thereof and cover the back of the jointer knives, and it can be moved into this position also and turned back upon the fixed portion 2 when work is being done with which a guard of this character would interfere, and this without removing the guard from the jointer. By reason of the fact that the member 7 is attached to the flange a by bolts, the entire device may be easily removed or applied to a machine, and by removing the stops 9, the guard itself may be taken from the machine, though the member 7 be left in place.
My invention is simple, very practical, and entirely effective in operation.
Preferably, I form the guard proper 3 and 4c of wood, though I do not wish to be limited to this material.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is l. The combination with a table and a tool carried therein, of a transversely 6X- tending guideway formed upon one end of the table, a slide block laterally movable in said guideway, and a flat cover hingedly connected to said slide block and adapted to be turned down to cover the tool, or turned up away therefrom.
2. The combination with a table and a tool mounted therein, of a transversely extending slideway at one end of the table, a slide block moving laterally in said slideway and having a portion extending over the top of the table, and a fiat cover hinged to the upper face of said extending portion, at the end thereof, and adapted to be turned down over the table and the tool carried therein.
3. The combination with a table and a tool carried therein, of a transversely extending member attached to one end of the table, said member having a dove-tailed transversely extending channel formed in its outer face, a slide block having a dove-tailed 1 rib engaging with said channel, a member attached to the slide block and extending partially over the face of the table, and a fiat coverin member hinged to the upper face of the rst named member and adapted to be moved down upon the face of the table, or turned over upon the first named member.

The combination with a table and a tool carried therein, of a transversely extending member mounted at one end of the table and flush with the upper face thereof, a slide block, means for slidably engaging the block with the outer face of said member, an inwardy projecting arm attached to the upper edge of the slide blocl: and extending over a portion of the table, and a fiat covering member hingedly attached to said arm and adapted to be turned over upon the arm, or turned down upon the face of the table, said member being laterally widened at its extremity.
5. The combination with a table and a tool carried therein, of a guideway formed at one end of the table and extending transversely thereof, a block slidable laterally in said guideway, an arm attached to said block and projecting over the face of the table, a flat covering member hingedly attached to the arm and adapted to be turned down upon the face of the table over the tool carried therein, and stops at the extremity of the guideway adapted to engage with the slide block to limit its movement.
