CLEANING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. BERGENS,.
av resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cleaning Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to cleaning apparatus and more especially toapparatus for use in connection with stables, garages, etc. for the cleaning' of horses and vehicles.
The object of my invention is to provide apparatus of this character which may be arranged over-head in such manner as to be out of the way when not in use and so arranged that the flexible hose connection used therewith cannot become entangled with the feet or legs of the horse and so disturb or frighten him.
To these ends my invention comprises, generally stated, a hollow shaft extending down within the compartment from the ceiling, said shaft being connected up with a vacuum cleaning apparatus or with a water supply, a rotary member on said shaft and a counter-balanced arm mounted on said rotary section, a cleaning tool and flexible pipe connections between said tool and said shaft.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 'Figure 1 is a side view of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of a hollow shaft.
I have illustrated my invention as used in connection with a vacuum cleaning system in which the elbow 2 is connected up by pipe 3 to such a system.
The numeral 4 indicates the ceiling of the stable or other building and secured to said ceiling by means of the bolts la is the section of hollow shafting 5 which is connected to the elbow 2. A hollow shaft section 6 fits up within a seat 7 in the shaft section 5. The shaft section 6 is supported by means of the gland 8. The section 6 has the ring 9 and on each side of said ring are the washers 10. A revolving clamp 11 surrounds the shaft section G which is provided with the ball-race 12 to receive the balls 13 which are interposed between said ball-race and the cone 14 on the clamp 11. The clamp 11 has the studs or aXles 15 projecting therefrom and mounted on said axles, and secured thereto by the Cotter pins 16, is the arm 17.
This arm 17 is bifurcated at 1S and at its inner ends are the weights 19 which act as counter-balances for said arm. The outer end of the arm carries the ring Q0. A nipple 9.1 is provided with the ring Q2 and said nipple is secured to the section 6 by means of the coupling 23 secured in place by the setserew 2st- A hose or flexible pipe connection 25 is secured to the nipple 21 by means of the hose clamp 2G. The hose 25 passes through the ring 20 at the outer end of the arm 17 and secured to the lower end of the hose 25 is a suitable cleaning device 27.
IVhen my improved apparatus is iii use in connection with the cleaning of horses the operator simply reaches up and draws down the tool 27 which is suspended at a suitable height and normally held in its raised position by means of the eounterbalanced arm 17. By drawing down upon the hose 25 the operator can lower the tool to any desired height and with the horse standing in proper position with reference to the tool the operator can move the tool over the body of the horse, the arm 17 being raised or lowered according to the height at which the tool is being used, There my improved apparatus is connected up with a vacuum system the dirt, dust or hair brushed from the horse will be drawn in through the tool 27 and will be conveyed up through the hose 25 and through the hollow shaft to the pipes of the vacuum cleaning system where it is disposed of in the ordinary manner. In case the horse becomes restive or frightened and it is necessary for the operator to let go of the tool the arm 17 will immediately raise the tool up to a point where it is out of the way and cannot in any way become entangled with the feet or legs of the horse, and just as soon as the cleaning operation is completed the tool, when released, will be automatically drawn up out of the way in position to be readily brought into use when desired for the next cleaning operation.
IVhile I have illustrated my invention as applied to a vacuum system, it is apparent that water might be discharged through the hollow shaft andfwitlr of a like eharacter the water will bel disli'ziiiged through the tool 27 and the water will be used to effect t-he cleaning. Any other suitable tool more adapted for the specific purpose for which it is to be used might be secured to the hose and I do not confine myself to any particular class of work to which my invention may be applied.
lVhat l claim is:
l. In a cleaning` device, the combination with an overhead support., of a hollow shaft extending down therefrom, a pipe connected to the upper end of said hollow shaft, a rotary sleeve on said shaft, a counter-balanced arm mounted on said rotary sleeve, a cleaning` tool and flexible connections between said tool and said shaft and supported by said eounterbalanced arm.
In a cleaning device, the combination with a suitable overhead support, a hollow shaft extending` down therefrom, a pipe connected to the upper end of said hollow shaft, a second hollow shaft extending up within the lower end of said first named shaft and supported therefrom, a rotary sleeve on said second named shaft, a eounterlmlanced arm mounted on said rotary sleeve, a cleaningtool, flexible connections between said tool and said shaft, and supported by said counterbalanced arm.
In a cleaning device the combination with a suitable overhead support, a hollow shaftextending down therefrom, a pipe l connected to the upper end of said hollow shaft, a second hollow shaft extending,` up within the lower end of said first named shaft, and supported therefrom, a rotary sleeve on said second shaft, a ball race on said second named shaft, balls interposed between said ball race and said sleeve, a counterbalanced arm mounted on said sleeve, a cleaning` tool, and flexible connections between said tool and said shaft and supported by said counterbalanced arm.
l. ln a cleaning` device, the combination with a suitable overhead support, a hollow shaft exteidnlii'diii therefrom, a pipe connected up to the upper end of said hollow shaft, a rotary sleeve on said shaft, a counterbalanced arm on said rotary sleeve, a cleaning tool, a flexible pipe, connections between ysaid flexible pipe and said shaft, and a ringat the outer end of said arm through which said flexible pipe passes.
