TILE-SETTER FOR WELLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBIN H. KLUomNc, citizen of the United States, residing at Sibley, in the county of Osceola and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tile-Setters for Tells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tile setters and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly practical device of this character, by means of which tiles may be lowered into a well and properly set without the necessity of the workmen entering the well and working in mud and water in the bottom thereof to effect the til ing of said well.
A further object is to provide a tile setter including a frame having gripping arms pivotally mounted thereon and movable into engagement with a tile for the purpose of holding said tile on the frame when lowering the latter into a well, means being provided for releasing the arms and withdrawing the frame from the well after the tile has been positioned therein.
A further object is to provide means for adjusting the frame to accommodate tiles of different cross sectional diameters.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a tile setter constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tile setter removed from the tile.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specification of Letters Patent.

The device comprises a supporting frame including spaced heads 5 and 6 each provided with radiating arms 7 having longitudinal slots 8 formed therein, the upper head 5 being provided with a centrally disposed opening 9 to permit the passage of an actuating cable 10, as shown.
Connecting some of the arms of the heads 5 and (3 are spaced side bars 11 having their upper ends bent inwardly to form attaching arms 12, the inner ends of which are provided with pins 13 adapted to enter the adjacent slots 8, the lower ends of the side bars 11 being riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to adjustable brackets 1% carried by the lower head (5. The inner ends of the brackets 1 1 are provided with depending pins 15, similar in construction to the pins 13 and which pass through the slots 8 in the lower head (3. The side bars 11, together with the arms 12 and brackets 1 1 are adjustable laterally with respect to the heads so as to make the frame larger or smaller and thus permit the device to be used in connection with tiles of different cross sectional diameters, said side bars being locked in adjusted position by bolts or similar fastening devices 16, the latter being extended through the slots 8 and the adjacent arms 12 and 14 for engagement with suitable clamping nuts 17, as shown. Disposed at right angles to the side bars 11 are similar side bars 18, the upper ends of which are deflected inwardly over the head 5, as indicated at 19 and provided with terminal perforations to permit the attachment of a chain or cable 20 by means of which the frame may be lowered into or removed from a well. The upper ends of the side bars 18 are rigidly secured to brackets 21, while the lower ends thereof are rigidly secured to brackets 22. The brackets 21 and 22 are slidably mounted on the adjacent arms of the upper and lower heads 5 and 6, so as to permit the side bars 18 to be adjusted laterally, bolts 23 being extended through the brackets and slots in the adjacent arms for locking the side bars 18 in adjusted position. One end of each bracket 21 is provided with a terminal eye 24: in which is pivotally mounted the bifurcated end of a gripping arm 25, the lower end of said gripping arm being provided with a laterally projecting finger 26 which extends through a slot 27 in the adjacent side bar 18 for engagement with the interior of a tile, indicated at 28. Pivotally connected at 29 to the lower end of each gripping arm 25, is a trip device 30 preferably in the form of a bell crank lever having its free end provided with an eye to permit the attachment of the actuz'iting cable 10. The metal forming one end of each bracket 2 is bent upwardly to produce a stop lip 31 adapted to bear against the elbow 32 of the trip device for the purpose of locking the gripping arm in engagement with the interior wall of the tile. The lower ends of all of the side bars are preferably bent or deflected inwardly at 33 so as to permit the ready insertion of the frame within a tile without danger of cracking or otherwise mutilating the same. Springs 3% are secured to the inner faces of the side bars 18 and adapted to bear against the adjacent faces of the gripping arms 25 for the purpose of normally and yieldably holding the fingers 26 of said gripping arms in retracted position.
In using the device, the frame is positioned within a tile and a lateral pressure exerted on the lower ends of the gripping arms 25 which forces the fingers 26 of said arms outwardly through the slots 27 into engagement with the inner wall of the tile. As soon the free ends of the fingers 26 clear the openings 27, the trip devices 30 will drop by gravity so as to cause the elbows 32 to engage the stop lips 31 and lock the gripping arms in engagement with the tile. The frame with a tile in position thereon is then lowered into the well by means of a hoisting cable 35, and after the tile has reached the bottom of the well, a longitudi nal pull is exert-ed on the actuating cable 10 which elevates the trip devices 30, thus causing the springs 34: to release the gripping arms 25 from engagement with the tile so that the frame may be withdrawn from the well by the hoisting cable 35, leaving tln tile in proper position w'thin the well, this operation being continued until the well is entirely tiled.
In order to adjust the supporting frame, it is merely necessary to release the fastening devices 16 and 23 when the side bars may be moved outwardly or inwardly and locked in adjusted position by rotating the fastening devices, in the manner before stated.
It will be noted that when the gripping arms 25 are in normal or inoperative position, the long arms of the trip devices 30 rest on the top of the stop lips 31 so that when a lateral outward pressure is exerted on the gripping arms, said arms will drop by gravity into engagement with the stop lips and thus automatically and positively lock the gripping arms in engagement with a tile. It will also be noted that the pins 13 and 15, by engagement with the walls of the slots 8 serve to guide the side bars when the latter are adjusted laterally with respect to the heads of the supporting frame.
It will of course be understood that the device may be made in different sizes, and shapes, and nickeled, japanned or otherwise coated to protect the same from the action of the elements.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A title setter including a rigid frame, a gripping device pivotally mounted on the frame and movable into engagement with a tile, a trip device pivotally connected with the lower end of said gripping device for holding the gripping device in engagement with said tile, and means operatively connected with the trip device for releasing the latter.
2. A tile setter including a rigid frame adapted to fit within a tile, gripping arms pivotally mounted on the frame and movable into frictional engagement with the inner wall of a tile, trip devices pivotally connected with the lower ends of the gripping arms for holding the gripping arms in engagement with the tile, and means operatively connected with the trip devices for releasing the latter.
3. A tile setter including a frame having slots formed therein, gripping arms mounted on the frame and provided with angularly disposed fingers movable through said slots into engagement with a tile, trip devices connected with the arms for holding the fingers in contact with said tile, and means operatively connected with the trip devices for releasing the latter.
4. A tile setter including an adjustable frame adapted to fit within a tile and provided with slots, gripping arms pivotally mounted on the frame and provided with terminal fingers extending through said slots for engagement with the interior wall of the tile, stop lips secured to the frame, trip devices pivotally connected with the gripping arms and adapted to engage the stop lips for holding the fingers of said gripping arms in engagement with the tile, and means connected with said trip devices for disengaging the latter from the stop lips to permit the removal of the frame from the tile.
5. A tile setter including a frame having slots formed therein and adapted to lit within a tile, gripping arms pivotally mounted on the frame and provided with angularly disposed fingers adapted to extend through said slots for engagement with the inner wall of the tile, stop lips spaced from the lower ends of the gripping arms, springs bearing against the gripping arms for normally holding the fingers thereof in retracted position, trip devices pivotally connected with said gripping arms and provided with elbows adapted to bear against the outer faces of the stop lips for holding the fingers of the gripping arms in engagement with the tile, an actuating cable connected with the trip devices for releasing the latter, and a hoisting cable connected with the frame.

A tile setter including a supporting frame adapted to fit within a tile, gripping arms pivotally mounted on the supporting frame for engagement with said tile, stop lips spaced from the lower ends of the gripping arms, trip devices normally resting on the stop lips and movable by gravity into engagement with the adjacent vertical faces of the stop lips when the gripping arms are pressed laterally into engagement with the tile, and means connected with the trip devices for releasing the latter to permit the withdrawal of the frame from said tile.
7. A til-e setter including spaced heads, laterally adjustable side bars connecting the heads, some of which are provided with slots, gripping arms pivotally mounted on the slotted side bars and provided with terminal fingers projecting through said slots for engagement with a tile, stops secured to the lower head, trip devices pivotally connected with the gripping arms and movable by gravity into engagement with the stops when a lateral pressure is exerted on said gripping arms, and means connected with the trip devices for releasing the latter.
8. A tile setter including spaced heads having radiating arms provided with slots, side bars connecting the arms of said heads, some of the side bars being slotted and other side bars provided with pins slidably mounted in the slots of the adjacent arms, pivotally mounted gripping arms having ter minal fingers extending through the slots in the bars. for engagement with the interior wall of a tile, springs for normally holding the fingers out of engagement with the tile, stops carried by the lower head, trip devices normally resting on the upper ends of the slots and movable by gravity into engagement with the adjacent vertical edges of said stops when a lateral pressure is exerted on the gripping arms, and an actuating cable connected with the trip devices for releasing the latter from said stops.
9. A tile setter comprising spaced heads connected by side bars, the lower ends of which are bent inwardly, some of said side bars being provided with vertical slots and having their upper ends bent inwardly and formed with terminal eyes, gripping arms pivotally mounted on the slotted bars and provided with fingers extending through said slots for engagement with a tile, stops carried by the lower head, a trip device pivotally connected with each gripping arm and adapted to engage the stop for holding the fingers of the gripping arms in engagement with said tile, springs bearing against the gripping arms, a hoisting cable engaging the eyes in the deflected ends of the slotted arms, and an actuating cable operatively connected with the trip devices and extending through an opening in the upper head for releasing saixd trip devices.
