To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatLl/VILHELM NEUMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Screw-Outting-Die Heads, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to dies used in cutting threads o-n bolts, pipes and the like.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a wide range of adjustability, whereby the same will cut threads upon bolts, pipes, etc. of different sizes up to the size of the bore in the die head.
Another object of the invention is to arrange the holders carrying the chasers in such a manner that only a single means is needed for the adjustment of one of the same, the others following automatically the movement thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size, proportion and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a screw cutting die head constructed in accordance with the principle of the invention; F ig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are plan views of the chaser adjusting blocks, and Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are side elevations of the blocks shown in Figs. 4 to G, inclusive.
1n the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the shaft to which the die stock 11 is a'- tached. The connection between these two members need not be described here as the same does not form an essential part of the invention, and is, on the other hand, well known in the art. The die stock 11 is provided at its front end with an enlarged head 12, having an axial bore 13, the size of which determines the capacity of the die Specification of Letters Patent.

head. In the front face of the die head around the axial bore 13 is provided a triangular groove 14 of any suitable cross section, for instance, quadrangular, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. There are furthermore recesses 15, 16 and 17 provided in the front face of the die stock 11, which are located around the three corners of the triangular groove 14. The purpose of this arrangement will be hereinafter described.
The cli-aser holders 13, preferably three in number, are arranged in grooves 19, 19 of a disk 20, which is fastened by means of screws 21, 21, or in any other suitable manner, to the die stock 11. r1`he holders 13 are, preferably, U-shaped and arranged in similarly shaped radial grooves in the disk 2O in such a manner that the same may be moved in radial directions relative to the bore 13 and the axial bore 22 in the disk 20, which latter bore registers with the bore 13. The chasers 23, 23 are arranged in recesses 24, 24 in the holders 18, and kept therein by means of screws 25, The positions of the chasers upon their holders are determined by pins 26, 2G, carried by said chasers and engaging recesses 27, 27 in the holders 18, 18. Obviously the chasers 23 must be provided at their inner ends with cutting edges 28, 2S in the form of screw threads. Each of the Chaser holders 18 is provided in its inner leg 29 with a groove 30, which groove is arranged at an angle to the longi tudinal axis of said leg. These grooves are engaged by projections 31, 31 of the adjusting blocks 32, 33 and 34, which blocks are slidably arranged in the triangular groove 14, hereinbefore described, and kept in said groove by the disk 20. Each of these blocks is of an oblong conliguration and of a cross section which fits into the groove 14. Two of the corners of each block are cut off along the edges 35, 35, whereby the blocks, when placed into the groove 14, form an equilateral triangle. Since the blocks contact with each other along their edges 35, 35, it will be easily seen that when one of these blocks, for instance block 32 is moved in one or the other direction in the groove 14, the blocks 33 and 34 will follow the movement of the block 32 in their corresponding portions of the groove. r1`he projections 31, 31 of the blocks are arranged at an angle to the longitudinal axis 'of the blocks 32, 33 and 34, and engage as hereinbefore described, the walls of the grooves 30, 30 in the legs 29 of the holders 1S. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the axis of the grooves 30 and of t-he projections 31 coincide.
The means for shifting the blocks 32, 33 and 34 comprises a spindle 36, rotatably mounted in the head 12 of the die stock, and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the block 32. This spindle is screw threaded, as shown at 37 in Figs. 1 and 2 ot' the drawings. The threads 37 mesh with the threads 3S in the block 32. To facilitate the rotation of the spindle 3G, the same is provided with a milled knob 39, and in order to ascertain the amount of the angular movement of the spindle, an enlarged portion el() thereof is provided with graduatons 41, while upon the head 12 a Zero mark ft2 is arranged. A screw 43 in the die stoel; is adapted to bear against the enlarged portion l0 of the bolt, and 'to iix the position of the same, if properly tightened.
The operation of t-he device is as follows: The proper chasers of the required pitch are secured in the manner hereinbetore described upon the holders 1S. The holders must then be moved in a radial direction to bring the chasers in the position for cutting a thread of a predetermined diameter. This is accomplished by rotating the spindle 36, whereby the bloclr 32 is moved in a direction of the axis of said spindle, moving thus the holder radially in one or the other direction relative to the axial bore 13, since the projection 31 of the block is arranged at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the same. The blocks 33 and 34; participate in the movement of the block 32 and move thereby their respective holder 1S in a similar manner. As soon as the chasers are in the proper position, the screw 32 is tightened up, whereby the die stock is ready for operation.
What I claim is:
1. In a screw cutting die head, the combination with a die stock having an axial bore and a triangular groove around said bore, of a plurality of chaser holders arranged upon said die stock, cooperating adjusting-blocks arranged in said triangular groove and engaging said chaser holders, and means engaging one of said blocks for simultaneously shifting all of the same around said axial bore.

In a screw cutting die head, the combination with a die stock having an axial bore and a triangular groove around said bore, of a plurality of chaser holders arranged upon said die stock, contacting adjusting-blocks arranged in said triangular groove and engaging said chaser holders, and means engaging one of said blocks for simultaneously shifting all of the same around said axial bore.

In a screw cutting die head, the combination with a die stoclr having an axial bore and a triangular groove around said bore, of a disk mounted upon said die stock having a bore registering with the bore of said die stock and being provided with a plurality of grooves running in radial directions relative to said bore, a plurality ot chaser holders slidably mounted in the grooves of said disk, coperating adjustingblocks arranged in said triangular groove and engaging said chaser holders, and means engaging one or' said blocks Jfor simultaneously shifting all of the same around said axial bores and moving t-hus said chaser holders in radial direct-ions relative to said bores.
6. In a screw cutting die head, the combination with a die stock having an axial bore and a triangular groove around said bore, of a disk mounted upon said die stock having a bore registering with the bore of said die stock and being provided with a plurality of grooves running in radial directions relative to said bore, a plurality of chaser holders slidably mounted in the grooves of said disk, cooperating adjustingblocks arranged in said triangular groove and engaging said chaser holders, one of said blocks being provided with screw threads, and a screw threaded spindle meshing with the threads of said block for simultaneously shifting all of the same around said axial bores and moving thus said chaser holders in radial directions relative to said bores.
7. In a screw cutting die head, t-he combination with a die stock having an axial bore and a triangular groove around said bore, of a disk mounted upon said die stock having a bore registering with the bore of said die stock and being provided With a plurality of grooves running in radial directions relative to said bore, a plurality of Chaser holders slidahly mounted in the grooves of said disk, contacting-adjustingblocks arranged in said triangular groove and engaging said Chaser holders, and means engaging one of said blocks for simultaneously shifting all of the same around said axial bores and moving thus said Chaser holders in radial directions relative to said bores.
