T e principal object of the invention is the revision of means of an inexpensive, simp e and reliable character and capable of convenient a plicat-ion to anyferm of ertable electric amp whereby the lamp may e lighted or extinguished.
The invention is shown in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings where- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portable lamp showing the circuit closer in plan, Fig. 2 is a'lon 'tudinal section of the lamp, showing the circuit closer part1 in elevation and Fig. 3 is a longitudina section of one portion of the circuit closer.
"The usual casing of the lamp 1s shown at 10, the same being made of insulating ana- 'terial and provided with a threaded metal end 11 which is applied to the exterior of the casing 10 at the rear end thereof. The usual batteries are shown at 12, 13 and are held in place by the cap 14 which screws onto the threaded end 11, and, preferably, by the spring 15. The usual-lamp 16 screws into the reflector 17 behind the lens 18 in a well known manner{ the whole being secured by a threaded thimble 19 which screws onto the upper end of the lamp. As usual in these devices, one terminal of the lamp 16 makes contact at 20 with one terminal of the batter while the other terminal of the lamp is e ectrically connected to the metal reflector 17.
The circuit closing means comprises two ortlons, one of which 1s composed of a fixed metal plate 21 riveted to the exterior of the'casingand kept in permanent electric connection with one terminal of the lamp bymeans of the conductor 22 and the reflector 17 The usual insulatin material 23 surrounds the battery cells and prevents their making contact with the conductor 22 .or other metal parts projecting into the easing 10. Theother portion of the circuit closer comprises a sliding spring tongue 24 Specification b: Mau ham.

within an appropriate metal box 25 providedwith a slot 26 through which pro ects the in 27 fastened to one'end of the spring 24 y means of a thread and a nut 28 and having at its top a button 29 which can be pushed by' a' thumb or finger of the user to slide the tongue 24 backand forth. I prefer to fix the nut 28 to the: spring 24 by means of solder 30 to prevent accidental loosening of the button.
The 'box 25 is fastened to the exterior of the casing 10 preferably by rivets as shown, and said box, together with the spring 24, is maintained in permanent electric connection, by means of the conductor 31, with the thread'end 11, and therefore through the cap 14 and spring 15, with the zinc terminal of the battery. As shown in Fig. 2, when the spring 24 is thrust forward 1nto dotted line position, circuit is closed through the lamp by contact of the spring with the upwardly bending metal plate 21. Retraction of the spring to the posit on shown in Fig. 1 will break the circuit and put out the amp.
In order to facilitate proper construction of the box which contains the spring 24, 1 prefer to make the same in two parts comprising a relatively wide plate 32 which is riveted directly to the casing and an upper slotted section, to which the numeral 25 is applied, which is open at the bottom and has tangs or extensions 33 which pass through appropriate openings in the lower plate 32 and are then turned over to secure the two sections of the boxtogether. By use of this construction the firm fastening of the spring 24 under sufiicient flexure to provide. a strong spring pressure against the box 25 can be accomplished before the two sections of the box are fastened together. The two sections can then be assembled and secured together, after which the whole can be riveted to the casing as shown. P
