Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. XVHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of lVorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stops for `Water-Vheels, of which the fol-lowing is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a water wheel governor with a stop embodying my inven tion applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of a governor, partly in section, showing my improved stop also in section.

My invention relates to a stop for water wheels by which upon the completion of an electric circuit the water is immediately shut off from the water wheel, thereby stopping the wheel at once, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
I have shown my stop attached to a water wheel governor of the class shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 7 54,469, issued to Nathaniel Lombard March 15, 1904, to which patent reference may be had for a more detailed description of the parts of the governor not herein described. As fully described in said Letters Patent and as will be well understood by persons conversant with hydraulic governors, a governor of this class comprises means for opening or closing the water gate according to the speed of the water wheels, and its operative parts are actuated by a piston equipped power cylinder 1, to which Huid under pressure is admitted upon either side of the piston by means of a reciprocating spool shaped valve 2, inclosed in a valve case 3, and carried upon a valve stem 4. The valve stem 4 is connected by a system of levers with a weighted governor 5 of the centrifugal type inclosed in the rotating belt pulley 6, whereby the speed of the belt pulley G as driven by the water wheel will cause the valve 2 to reciprocate to open or close the ports 7 and 7EL through which fluid under pressure is admitted to either end of the power cylinder 1. This portion of the mechanism forms no part of Specification of Letters Patent.

my present invention, as it is now in common use in water wheel governors of this class and is fully described in the patent to Lombard aforesaid N o. 754,469.
It is the object of my present invention to provide means by which the valve 2 may be moved instantaneously in one direction at Will, in order to admit fluid to the power cylinder in order to close the water gate and stop the water wheel, and my invention is applicable to any type of governor which comprises a piston equipped cylinder and a controlling valve for admitting liuid under pressure thereto. The system of levers by which the valve stem 4 is connected with the centrifugal governor 5 comprises a lever 8 pivoted at its lower end to the framework of the machine and having its upper end pivotally connected with a shell 9 through which the valve stem 4 passes. Within the shell 9 and adjustably attached to the valve stem 4 is a` nut 10 which is held stationary with reference to the shell 9 by a latch 11. A check nut 12 holds the nut 10 in position when the valve stem and valve 2 have been properly adjusted in the valve case 3. The action of the centrifugal governor 5 through its lever connection reciprocates the shell 9 which carries with it also the nut 10 and the valve stem 4, thereby opening and closing the ports 7 and 721. The end 13 of the latch 11 is provided with an armature 14 which, when the magnet 15 forming part of an electric circuit is energized by the completion of the circuit, is drawn down, thereby rocking the latch and releasing the nut 10, which is pushed out of the shell 9 by the spiral spring 16 until its movement is checked by the contact of the set screw 17 and the shoulder 18. This moves the valve stem and valve in the proper direction to open that port which is designed to admit fluid to the power cylinder to close the water gate upon which the entire power is shut off from the water wheel. It is thus possible by merely touching a button or by any other convenient way of completing the electric circuit anywhere in a mill to stop immediately the motion of the water wheel and all the machinery driven by it. W'hen the parts are restored to their normal position, and the electric circuit broken, the nut 10 is again locked by the latch 11 and the valve 2 brought into proper relation to the ports 7 and 7a to resume the operation of the governor.
I claim,
l. rl`he combination of a power controlling valve, an integral valve stem for said valve, a governor for operating said valve stem, a shell connected with said governor surround ing said valve stem, open at one end, connecting means adjnstably attached at said open end to said valve stem and detachably held in said shell, and a spring held in said shell arranged to move said valve stem out of said shell when said detachable means are released, thereby operating said valve independently of the operation of said governor.
2. In a governor of the class described, the combination with a power controlling valve, and a valve stem carrying said valve, of a spring having its tension applied to move said valve stem in one direction, a nut adjustably held on said valve stem, and a latch engaging said nut to hold the valve stem against the tension of said spring, and means for releasing said latch.
4. In a governor of the class described, thev combination with the stem of a power controlling valve, of a nut held on said stem, a sleeve inclosing said nut, a spiral spring interposed between said sleeve and said nut, a latch held by said sleeve and engaging said nut, and means for releasing said latch at will.
