To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, WILLIAM YUILE FORBES and WILLIAM HASTINGS Ro'rHwnLL, both subjects of the King of Great Britain andlreland, residing at Lynwood Huyton, Liverpool, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Typeriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to typewriting machines and relates to certain paper feeding motions in connection with the platen roller, namely, a motion whereby the platen at the first onset: an arrangement of finger pieces for keeping, thev paper closely against the platen; line spacing motions; a frictional arrangement whereby the platen may be 7 turned independently of its ratchet motion:
a date line feed motion whereby headed letter paper may be fed into itsposition to be dated; a supplementary paper holder for use in connection with loose leaf book-keepmg; and motions connected therewith.
In the annexed drawings :-Figure 1 is anend view of the platen carriage, showing arrangement of press rollers and line spacing gear. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail showing a rictional connection between the platen roller and its line spacing ratchet wheel. Fig. 3 is a part plan of the platen carriage, showing an arrangement of supplementary paper holder, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is an end view of the platen carriage, showing a date line feeding device. Fig. 6 is an underside plan, and Fig. 7 is a side View, of mechanism for varying the extent of the travel of the line spacing lever.
The paper is led on to the platen roller 75 by a downward movement upon the feeding plate 76, which allows the edge of the paper to fall into. the crevice between the platen 7 5 and the firstfeed or pressure roller 77, whereby the paper is fed squarely upon the platen at the first onset. Paper'fingers 78, that is fingers against the platen, slide upon a rod 79 and are attached to sliding rods 80, the ends of the latter forming finger pieces 81, by which such paper fingers 7 8 may be adjusted for any space along the platen roller. The first pressure roller 77 and also the second pressure roller 82 are carried on a bow plate 111.
Line spacing rotation is imparted to the platen roller by the line spacing lever 82 line spacing lever for'keeping the paper closelycarried on the hand end of the hand lever 24., through the cord or wire 84; led along the underside of said hand lever, and pull-rod 85, the latter engaging with a bar 86 con necting the side levers 87 on the carriage 13. Upon the upper end of a rod 88 coupled to one of said side levers is a pawl 89, which engages with the crown-wheel teeth of the ratchet wheel 90 on the axis ofthe platen.
The peripheral teeth of this ratchet wheel engage with the usual detent roller. v
The extent of the line spacing may be varied by varying the travel of the line spacing lever 83, by means of the stop piece 128 on the sliding rod129, this rod being slotted and sliding on the pins 130 in the handle 24:. The outward end 131 of the rod 129 is bent to form afinger piece and tooth, the latter bein sprung into either of the three notches 132 1n the handle 24. The full travel of the 83 produces a three-line space, hence by adjusting the end 131 of the rod 129 into either of the notches 132, a onetwoor three-line space is produced by the travel of the lever 83.
A means whereby the platen roller 75 may be turned independently of the ratchet wheel 90, consists in placing the platen in platen by the lever 92 and finger piece 93,
,the latter being mounted on the axis of the platen and possessing an eccentric boss 94 which depresses the lever 92.
In order that headed letter paper or the like may befed into the machine so that the date line of such heading assumes its correct position on the platen automatically, there is employed a toothed sector 96 which is arranged to engage and disengage with a pinion 97 on the axis of the platen. The sector 96 is journaled on the eccentric boss 98 of the lever 99. A'forward movement of said lever serves to bring the sector into engagement with the pinion 97, and by that time the tooth 100 on-the boss 98 engages the pin 101 on the sector, so that both the lever and sector are then rotated about the pin 102, the sector turning the pinion 97 and also the platen until the latter has rotated sufiijustable stop piece 103. \Vhen such date line feed has been accomplished the lever 99 is returned to its first position in relation to the sector, either by hand or by spring, which movement disengages the sector 96 from the pinion 97, through the eccentric boss 08, so that the sector is now free to re turn to its first position under the influence of a spring. Q i i For the purposes of loose leaf book-keeping and other purposes, provision is made for taking an original copy upon a sheet of paper which is capable of manipulation independently ofi the sheet to be carboned, which latter is carried on theplaten roller. For instance, where itis desired .tokeep a copy of an invoice and also to save the'space which would otherwise be occupied by the customersname and address, that is, where a. copy is to be kept of thecontents of a number of invoices, on a single sheet, as for instance for the purposes of a loose-leaf stock book, a paper-holder 104i is arranged in front of the platen, in addition to the {rear feed plate at the back of the platen. The
. paper-holder 104 is prefrablyof the volute form illustrated. The paper which will form the original of the invoice or similar document is inserted backward into the volute holder l04,'while the sheet which is to retain acarbon copy of this and succeeding invoices is entered-together with a carbon sheet-upon the platen in the usual way. To permit of the original being inserted into the volute holder 104:, the upperportion 105 thereof, is hinged to the lower portion at 106, so that it may be turned upward, and, the scale plate 107 is carried by such part and also the paper fingers 7 8 and their slide'rods 79, 80. A spring 108 serves to keep such hinged part of the holder downward. Finger lift-pieces 127 may be formed on the part 105 of the holder. A sheet having been inserted into the volute holder and another sheet and'carbon on the platen, the leading edge of the volute sheet is pressed on the platen by the pressure roller 109 carried on the 5.1'111 110, the latter being pivoted and capable of being turned into an upright position when not required.
