EGG AND CREAM BEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20, 1910.
Application filed March 19, 1909. Serial No. 484,383.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOROTHY TAYLOR, citizen of the United States, residing at Colfax, in the county of Placer and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg and Cream Beaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to egg and cream heaters or Whippers, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, practical and useful kitchen article especially adapted for beating or whipping eggs, cream, batter and the like, which device is simple anl economical in construction.
lVith the above shown object in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a beater embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
The device contemplated in this invention embodies an approximately elliptical body 1 comprising opposite parallel plane surfaces as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the said body together with the shank 2 thereof being formed out of a single sheet metal blank preferably hard rolled to render the same strong and flexible, thereby adding to the efliciency of the beater in its complete form. In connection with the shank 2 which forms a part'of the handle, the handle comprises a reinforcing Wire embodying substantially parallel arms 3 and an end cross bar or connecting portion 4. In the manufacture of the device, the longitudinal edges of the shank 2 are folded around and upon the arms 3 so as to inclose the same and if desired the'edge portions which are thus folded upon the wire, may be soldered or otherwise permanently fastened. In this way a strong and well braced handle is provided for the utensil.
The elliptical body 1 is provided with a number of angularly disposed hexagonal slots 5 and 6 and it will be observed that no two of said slots extend in the same direction. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the central slot 5 extends lengthwise and disposed inthe major axis of the body 1. while the remaining slots 6 extend obliquely and angularly with respect to each other and to the central slot 5, one in each quarter of the body 1 and the said slots 6 are spaced from and follow substantially'thc peripheral edge of the body. The slots render the body more flexible and yet the body will retain its shape since the marginal portion disposed outwardly from the slots 6 is connected with the middle portion of the body at the points between adjacent ends of juxtaposed slots, the said adjacent ends of the slots being spaced apart a considerable distance to leave ample stock to connect the said portions of the body together. By reason of this arrangement of slots and also by reason of the flexibility of the blade or body 1 of the utensil, a swirling action is imparted to the liquid through which the device is forced thus producing varying counteracting eddies or currents, the result being that the liquid is more quickly whipped orbea'ten into the desired condition. The angles at the opposite ends of the slot-s also contribute to the same end by serving to more thoroughly break up the liquid as it passes through the slots or apertures in the body.
I claim As an article of manufacture, a beater comprising a single piece of metal formed into an elliptical body and a handle, said body being of flexible metal and flat on opposite sides, there being a central slot disposed in the major axis of the body and obliquely disposed slots one in each quarter of the body between the major and minor axes, the obliquely arranged slots being arranged inwardly from and following approximately the peripheral edge of the body and the adjacent ends of juxtaposed slots being spaced apart for connecting the marginal portion of the body beyond the obliquely disposed slots with the central portion of the body located inwardly from the slots.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DOROTHY TAYLOR. Witnesses:
