LAMP-BRACKET.

To all whom it may concern.' I

Be it known that I, HENRY C. ENGELBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York borough of Manhattan, in the county and tate of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Bracket, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.

The invention has in view a guard in connection with the lam bracket of vehicles, to prevent the lamp from loosening should the socket work loose on the lamp post; such a guard will drop to a locked position tion of the vehicle.

The invention may be defined as a lamp bracket for vehicles having a lamp post for receiving the lamp socket, a guard pivoted to the post above the normal position of the socket and heavier at one side of its pivot than the other, and movable into alinement with the post, with the heavy end at the top, whereby the guard will be overbalanced by the vibration of the vehicle and thereafter swing crosswise of the post by gravity.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp bracket embodying my invention, showing the lamp applied thereto in dotted outline; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lamp post and guard in central vertical section and with the guard in anv upright position, as when removing and replacing the lamp; Fig. 3 is a front view of the bracket with the guard in the position as illustrated in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the guard.

I have shown my improvement applied to a well-known form of lamp bracket comotherwise rigid with an outwardly-projecting arm 11, which in turn is rigid with an upright post 12, the latter receiving the socket of the lamp, and as a rule angular in cross-section to prevent the socket from turning, although neither this nor the construction of the lamp bracket proper is essential to my invention, it being only necessary that an upright lamp post be provided.

is rounded out on its top edge for receiving the pivot pin of a guard 14:, the pivot pin in the particular embodiment of my invention shown being in the nature of trunnions 15 formed integrally with the guard. That portion of the O'uard which carries the pivot pins is of reduced diameter to approximately fit the slot between the ears 13, and above the trunnions the guard has a rounded head, the maximum diameter of which is equal to the width of the post 12, to give the post the appearance of continuity and a finished form when the guard is turned to an upright position in substantial alinement with the post, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This construction of the guard also makes that portion above the trunnions heavier than the portion below, which is an important feature of the invention.

The guard is connected to the post by a strap 16, which embraces the inner and outer faces thereof, and is riveted or otherwise suitably secured. The strap at one side of the slot in the lamp post, preferably the front, .is cut out, as is also the other side directly opposite the trunnions, to admit of the lower portion of the guard swinging outwardly and the guard turning crosswise of the post, the portion of the strap remaining at the inner side of the slot serving as a stop for the guard when in both an upright and a horizontal position.

l/Vhen the lamp is applied to or removed from a lamp post having my improvements, the guard is turned to an upright position, forming a continuation of the post, and when the socket is in place it may be secured by a set-screw or other device, as is the usual practice. It is unnecessary that the driver or chauffeur of the vehicle turn the guard down when the lamp is in place, for the vibration of the vehicle, when the same is started, will jar the guard from its stable position, when it will swing crosswise of the post under the action of gravity. It is thus apparent that by this mode of operation of the guard there is no danger of the lamp loosening by reason of negligence or failure to manually turn the guard crosswise of the post.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
