To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED E. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Krem, in the county of Mercer, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vhip-Socket Locks; and I do hereby declare the follow-l ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined whip sockets and locks, and has for one of its objects Vto provide a device of this character so constructed that the whip may be inserted by forcing it downwardly which movement automatically locks the whip in the socket, but canbe removed therefrom only by the application of a key.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the whip socket constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of the key whereby the whip is released.
The improved device may be embodied in various forms of whip sockets, and to whip sockets constructed of various materials, and
for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional form of whip socket represented as a whole at 10. The body of the socket is provided with bearing ribs 11 to provide means for holding the supporting straps whereby the socket is connected to a dash board, but as the means for ,14 having open slots 15-16 in its terminals.
Slidably disposed upon the seat is another semi-circular member 17 with its terminals underlying the terminals of the member 14 and provided with upwardly directed pins 18-19 which extend through the slots 15-1G. By this means the member 17 is movable toward and away from the member 14 and guided in its movement bythe pins 18w-19 operating in the guide slots 155-16. The member 17 extends normally for a distance within the opening defined by the contracted portion 12 and with the upper side of the member inclined as shown. so that as the butt end of the whip is inserted it will bear against the inclined face of the member 17 and move the latter outwardly to permit the whip to pass downwardly below the members 15-17, as hereinafter explained.
Formed upon the stock 10 at one side and opposite the seat 13 is a tubular extension 20, and formed upon the member 17 opposite the tubular extension is a stud 2l having an offset 22 preferably at its free end. Disposed within the extension 20 is a spring 23 bearing at its outer end against the outer end of the extension and at its inner end against the member 17, and thus maintaining the same yieldably in its inner position with the pins 18-19 bearing against the inner ends of the slots 151G. Projecting from the tubular extension 20 is a key-guide or sleeve 24. The key employed in the tubular device is represented at 25, and is tubular so that it will it over the stud 21 and is provided with an L-shaped slot 2G to engage over the pin 22, the operation to be hereinafter explained.
With a device thus constructed and secured in a convenient position upon the dash board the whip may be readily inserted from above and forced downwardly to cause its butt end to be guided through the opening between the members 14-17 and engage against the inclined face of the member 17 and force the latter' outwardly against the resistance of the spring 23 until the enlargement of the rib upon the bottom of the whip stock passes beneath the members 14--17 when the reaction of the spring 23 will cause the member 17 to bear against the stock above its lower flange and thus effectually lock the whip stock within the socket. y
When the whip is to be released the driver inserts the key 25 through the sleeve 24 and rotates the latter until the L-shaped slot 26 passes over the pin 22. The driver then rotates the key Q4 still farther to cause the inner end ol" the slot 26 to pass over the stud 2l and thus couples the key to the stud. Then by drawing the key outwardly the member 17 is withdrawn from engagement with the whip and releases the latter which may then be withdrawn from the socket.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and operates efl'ectually for the purposes described.
That is claimed is l. A whip socket having a transverse seat, a stationary bearing member supported upon said seat and provided with guide slots, a movable bearing member slidably supported upon said seat and provided with guide pins extending through said slots, yieldable means for supporting said movable bearing member, and a key operating to move said movable bearing member away from the stationary bearing member.
2. A whip socket having a transverse seat and with a hollow projection opposite the seat, a stationary bearing member supported upon said seat and provided with guide slots, a movable bearing member slidably supported upon said seat and provided with guide pins extending through said slots, a
spring within said projection and bearing upon the movable bearing member, and a key operating through said projection to move said movable bearing member away from the stationary bearing member.

A whip socket having a transverse seat and with a hollow projection opposite the seat, a stationary bearing member supported upon said seat, a movable bearing member slidably supported upon .said seat, a spring within the projection and bearing upon the movable bearing member, a stud projecting from said movable bearing member and extending into said spring, said stud having a late al offset, and a tubular key insertible through said tubular projection and engaging over said stud and provided with an L- shaped slot for engaging` with the offset of said stud and coupling the key to th-e st-ud.

A whip socket having a transverse seat and with a hollow projection oppositethe seat, a stationary bearing member supported upon said seat and provided with guide slots, a movable bearing member slidably supported upon said seat and provided with guide pins extending through said slots, a spring within said projection and bearing upon the movable bearing member, a stud extending from the movable bearing member and projecting into said spring, said stud having` a lateral offset, and a tubular key operating through said projection and engaging over said stud and provided with an L-shaped slot to engage the offset of the stud.
5. A whip socket having a hollow projection at one side, a bearing member movable within said socket, a spring actuated within said 'projection and bearing upon th'e movable member, a stud projecting from said movable bearing member and extending into said socket, said stud having a lateral offset, a tubular key insertible through said tubular projection and engaging over said stud and provided with an L-shaped slot for engaging with the offset of said stud and coupling the key to the stud.
