HUSKING-ROLL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CRAY'ION C. Caner, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Husking-Roll, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a husking roll and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a husking roll in which the husking pins are so mounted that they may be projected to greater or less extent beyond the periphery of the roll as the nature or condition of the corn upon which they operate may depend. Therefore the roll may be especially adapted to be used for husking corn when the blades of the husk are copious or scant.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the husking roll. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a modified form of the husking roll. Fig. 4: is a sectional view of a portion of a corn husker showing the roll in position thereon. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of a nipple forming a portion of the husking roll.
The roll 1 is hollow and is provided at one end with a gudgeon 2. The other end of the roll is closed by means of a screw plug 3 which in turn is provided with a gudgeon 4:. The plug 3 and gudgeon 4 are provided with a central longitudinal bore 5. A shaft 6 is rotatably mounted in the bore 5 of the plug 3 and gudgeon 4 and extends longitudinally along the interior of the roll 1. At its inner end the shaft 6 is provided with a disk 7 which fits snugly within the roll 1 and in contact with the end thereof that is provided with the gudgeon 2. Cams 8 are mounted at suitable intervals upon the shaft 6 and are fixed with relation to the same. A coil spring 9 surrounds a portion of the shaft 6 and bears at one end upon the inner surface of the ,plug 3 and at its other end against the adjacent cam 8. The spring 9 is under tension with a tendency to hold the shaft 6 toward that end of the roll 1 which carries the gudgeon 2. A knob 10 is fixed to the end of the shaft 6 which projects beyond the end of the gudgeon 4 and is provided in its periphery and at its inner face with a series of incisions or notches 11. The

end of the gudgeon is provided with a notch 12. It is to be understood that the notches may be reversed that is to say a series of notches may be provided in the gudgeon and a single notch in the said nut. When any one of the notches 11 is brought into register with the notch 12 the said notches are adapted to receive between them a pin 13 which forms a means for positively holding the shaft 6 against rotation within the bore 5.
Hollow nipples 14 are screw threaded in the roll 1 and husking pins 15 are slidably mounted in the said nipples. The inner ends of the husking pins 15 bear against the eccentric surfaces of the cams 8. The outer portions of the pins 15 are reduced in diameter as compared with the inner portions thereof forming shoulders 16 at points intermediate the ends of the said pins. The outer portions of the pins 15 fit snugly in perforations provided in the outer portions of the nipples 1 1 while the inner portions of the said pins are spaced from'the walls of the recesses in the nipples which receive them. Washers 17 are mounted upon the inner end portions of the pins 15 and fit snugly in the recesses provided in the nipples 14. Pins 18 pass transversely through the nipples and the recesses provided therein and are located at the opposite sides of the pins 15 and against which the washers 1.7 are adapted to bear. A pin 19 passes transversely through each of the pins 15 and the ends of the pins 19 project beyond the sides of the pins 15. Coil springs 20 are interposed between the pins 19 and the ends of the nipples 1 1 and are under tension with a tendency to hold the pins 19 toward the washers 17 and the washers 17 toward the pins 18.
WVhen it is desired to move the pins 15 with relation to the nipples 1 1 in order that the said pins may be projected to a greater or less extent beyond the ends of the nipples the pin 13 is removed from between the notches 11 and 12 when the shaft 6 is free to be turned by using the knob 10 as a handle. As the said shaft is turned the eccentric surfaces of the cams 8 are moved between the inner ends of the pins 15 and thus the said pins may be moved in an outward direction or an inward direction according to the direction in which the shaft 6 is turned. The eccentric edges of the cams 8 move the pins 15 in an outward direction and the pins are moved in an inward direction under the tension of the springs 20. As illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings the cams 8 are provided with approximately spiral eccentric edges while as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings the cam 8 is provided with an approximately elliptical eccentric edge. In either form of cam the operation is the same with the exception that when the cam as illustrated in, Fig. 2 of the drawings is to be used the shaft 6 may be completely rotated in one direction only.
Having described the invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A husking roll comprising a hollow cylindrical body, nipples detachably mounted upon the body, pins slidably mounted in the nipples and having at points between their ends shoulders, means located within the body for moving the pins in an outward directlon and holding the same, Washers 'mounted upon the pins and fitting snugly within the nipples, cross pins located in the nipples and adapted to be engaged by the cross pins located in the first said pins and adapted to engage the washers and springs interposed between the said cross pins and the nipples.
