FORTUNATO MARCIANO DARSI, OF YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR- TO AUTO-FLAME GAS BURNERS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK. N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CIGAR-LIGHTER.
Application filed August 11, 1909.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fon'rnxa'ro l\'lARCIANO DAnsr, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cigar-lighters, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which is normally extinguished but which is capable of lighting itself at the will of the user.
To this and other ends the invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of elements hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 is a section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.
The body portion 1 of the device is preferably cylindrical in form, and is provided with a threaded stem 2 by which it is connected to a valve. casing 3, said body portion being also provided with a central longitudinal gas passage -t adapted to register with a passage 5 in the valve casing, which latter passage is in communication with the transverse passage (3. At the top of the passage 4 is a pilot burner 7. and alongside of the same is a main burner 8, in communication with said passage by an angular passage 9. Extending upwardly from opposite sides of the pilot burner are two arms or standards 10, and carried at the top of each is a small mass or pellet 11 of suitable catalytic material capable of igniting, by the well known occluding action, a stream of gas issuing from the pilot burner. Extending downward over the pellets are the usual platinum filaments 12 for facilitating the ignition.
The main burner has a laterally extending burner tip 13, so as to direct its stream of gas across the stream from the pilot burner, and it will therefore be seen that when a flame is produced on the pilot burner the gas issuing from the main burner will be instantly ignited. The flow of gas to the two burners is regulated by two needle or screw Specification of Letters Patent.

valves 14;. 15. extending into the passages a and 9 respectively.
At one side of the valve casing 15 is anipple 16 having aremovable cap 17 provided with an aperture 18 for the admission of gas from a flexible tube 19 fitting tightly over the nipple and connecting the same with a. source of gas. This tube serves also to suspend the lighter from a chandelier or bracket. lnside the nipple is a small chamber '20 containing a 6' coil spring 21, one end of which abuts against the cap 17 and the other against a valve member 22 normally held by the spring against a seat formed in the valve casing. The stem 23 of the valve membe projects to the outside of the casing thron the passage 6 and constitutes a finger k or button by which the valve may be oper to admit gas to the burners. On the ant side of the casing 3 is a detachable ha 24, to be grasped by the hand in using lighter.
From the foregoing the operation device will be readily understood. sure of the finger on the stem or plu permits gas to flow to the burners. upon the stream from the pilot is by the catalytic pellets and in tr the main burner. The flame fron is directed laterally as shown, s conveniently directed upon the cigar or cigarette or into the bor If desired, the pilot flame may lated. by means of the valve 14, a. the flame long enough to reach tance above the tip of the ma' thereby a ftording two flames. eitl' the smoker may use, according the more convenient Upon re key 23 the valve 2() the spring and both To protect the cylindrical shield tachably mountet and provided w ford free acces At the side of for the main b a similar ope To insure pro with the mail" after the sa purpose, the
BEST AVAlLABLE COPY pointon its lower edge with an upwardly extending slot 29, adapted to fit over the projectingend of needle \"al've 15 when the shield is properly positioned, as shouui.
It is to be understood that the invention not limited to the precise details of construction herein described, as the same may be varied without departure from the proper spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
W'hat I claim is 1. In a lighter of the kind described, in combination, a body portion having gas passages, a pilot burner mounted on the body portion to receive gas from one of said passages, a main burner moui'ited on the body portion to receive gas from another of said passages, needle valves mounted in said body portion and extending into the gas passages to regulate the flow of gas there through, and a detachable shield inclosing the burners, provided with flame apertures to permit the flames from said burners to extend Outside the shield and havinoa slot;
eosgseu adapted to fit.- over the projecting end of combination, a body portion carrying a gas burner and automatic means for lighting the same, and avalve connected with the body portion, comprising a c: sing having a chambered nipple, a cap on the nipple, said nipple and cap constituting n'ieans for connecting the casing with a flexible gas tube to suspend the lighter, a springclosed valve member inside the nipple chamber, and a finger key or plunger projecting outside of the casing and connected with the valve member to operate the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
