To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT JACOB EAKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vhite Sulphur Springs, in the county of Greenbrier and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-cord guides, and has for its main object the provision of an improved device of this class, of simple and dust protecting construction, and which when applied in position will be rigidly supported from displacement, in a manner in which the load imposed thereon is utilized to hold it to a great extent in a fixed working position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character in which the sash or suspension cord will be properly guided and held from slipping off from the pulley sheave or coming into contact with the window frame, after the parts are assembled.
To this end my invention consists primarily of an over-head sash-pulley or sheave revolubly supported in a shell or dust protecting housing, that is provided at its load supporting base with a bifurcated tenon consisting of two parallel spaced depending members or lugs that are adapted to be removably inserted and held in part by the load borne by the pulley in mortises recessed in the supporting window frame, and which means serve in conjunction with a screw fastening and rope guiding means to positively secure the sash-pulley in applied position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,Figure 1, represents in front elevation the upper left hand portion of a window and its casing, showing one of my devices applied in operative relation thereto. Fig. 2, represents a like view of the device removed and showing the screw fastening member in separation therefrom. Fig. 3, represents a bottom plan view of the pulley device, while Fig. 4, shows a plan View of the head of the screw fastening means.
Like numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring particularly to Fig. l, of the drawings, in whichthere is shown the upper fragmentary portion of a window and its casing, 4, designates the upper sash, which is adapted to slide vertically up and down,
said sash being supported by weight 5, (on side shown) through-the medium of a suspension cord or rope 6, which passes over a sheave 7 of the over-head pulley. The portion of the window frame shown comprises the jamb 8, and cap-piece 9, while the horizontally extending top piece or lintel, is designated by the numeral 10. 11 designates the facing boards, and 11 the bead of the window.
Coming now to the present invention the sheave 7, which may be of any suitable form is shown as being revolubly supported by its shaft or trunnions a, in the guard shell or bracket, which latter is designated in a general way by the numeral 12. The shell 12, is preferably cast in one piece but I do not wish to limit myself to the exact manner of thus constructing it, as it may be made in separable sections bolted together in any suitable manner and may be made either'of sheet or cast metal. The shell comprises, however, in its essential elements an integral load bearing base having laterally extending flanges 13, and 14, that form shoulders which are adapted to rest on the top of the cappiece 9, as shown. The shell further comprises a means for securing the pulley in proper applied position with relation to the window and frame, and which consists of a tenon formed by a pair of downwardly projecting lugs 15, and 16, that extend in spaced parallelism at right-angles to the base proper to form a means that is adapted to fit neatly into correspondingly shaped and sized sockets or mortises 17 and 18, provided for that purpose in the window cap-piece 9. From such a construction and arrangement it will be observed that there is provided a means for attaching or affixing the sashcord guide or pulley to the window frame, in which the load strains exerted by the window and weight are directed to have a thrust in the direction of the projecting lugs seat-ed in the sockets or mortises, thereby holding them always in a working position by reason of said load, while any cross or lateral strain is compensated for by the binding action of said lugs against the walls of said mortises, without undue stress on either one of said lugs.
The lugs 15, and 16, are provided with centrally extending passageways 19 and 20, that are arranged to extend vertically in alinement with and intended for the passage of the sash cord 6, therethrough, said passageways being so disposed as to be in a line tangential with the groove 7 on either side of the sheave 7.
While the function of the lugs 15, and 16 is to hold the pulley in proper position without the liability of its displacement under ordinary conditions, which displacement is occasioned in the ordinary type of pulley by loosened screw fastenings, still it is proposed additionally in this invention to clamp and lock in binding relation said lugs within said mortises when seated therein, and to this end'there is provided a screwthreaded attaching member 21. The attaching member 21, comprises, as shown in the several figures, a cylindrical tubular body, that is provided externally with a male screw 23, that is adapted for engagement with the female screw portion 21 formed in the lug 16, while the attaching member 21, is also provided with a rope passageway or bore 24, to accommodate the cord or rope 6, when applied in proper position, as shown in Fig. 1. The screw fastening means is also provided with the slot 22.
It will be further understood that the device thus constructed and applied will be placed on each side of the window in duplicate for each sash.
Having described my invention, what I desire to claim as new and useful is:
1. In a device of the class described the combination with a window frame piece having formed therein mortises, of a pulley revolubly mounted in a shell, said shell having a base portion formed with tenons seating in said mortises, when said base is mounted 011 said frame piece, and means for guiding the sash cord that is adapted to engage and hold one of said tenons locked in its mortise. I
2. In a sash-cord guide and support, a shell comprising a bifurcated tenon projecting from the base thereof and adapted to be seated in mortises formed in a window casing, said tenon depending in the direction of the thrust of the load borne by said pulley, and a screw fastening means for locking said tenon in its mortises, which is adapted to provide a passageway for the sash-cord, substantially as described.
