GAS-HEATED IRON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, -JAMES H. BROWNLEE, a citizen of the'United States, residing at of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas- Heated Irons, of which the following is a specification.
My. invention relates to a new and useful improvement in gas heated irons, and has for its object to overcome the disadvantage he'rtofore experienced in lighting the gas in said irons by providing a detachable burner.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a deflector causing the flames to come in contact .with the lower portion of the iron, thus increasing. its heating capacity ',and another object is to provide a simple and efficient means forincreasing the weight of the iron. 1
lVith these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims. I In'order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may u derstand ,how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referringby letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in

Into the slot N is threaded the thumb screw P, which engages the arm Q formed with the burner B, said burner being provided with an opening S for the admission of air and having in its inner end a perforated plate or screen T for spreading the flames. i
The outer end of the burner is provided with a nipple U, over which passes the socket V of the tube W, said socket having a wire Y coiled about it to keep it from expanding when it becomes hot from the heat in the burner.
In order that comparatively no heat mayreach the handle Z, I provide a shoe A, the sides of which are open, and which rests between the projections H on the top of the iron.. Through this shoe passes a screw B which also passes through the opening Gr in the top of the iron and is threaded into the opemn K in the deflector, thus secur ing the-de ector and the handleto the iron. O is a shoe the same shape as the body A of the iron and which fits on the bottom of said body, being held thereto by suitable thumb screws D or their equivalents. These thumb screws may be placed any desirable distance apart, or one may be placed in both sides. This shoe is used for ironing 'purposes'the sameas the regular iron but makes an iron of greater weight for doing heavy work, and by the use of the ,same 1t is unnecessary to have a great'number of complete different size irons.

By this construction and operation.the difliculty of lighting a. burner is entirely then replaced by rejust explained. This to be projected into the overcome and prevents explosions which take place when a burner 18 lighted that 1s permanently attached to an iron, for in such case the iron is likely to become filled with gas. By the construction here shown an iron is produced the parts of which may be readily and easily placed together with very little expense and trouble, and by using a deflector thatportion of the flame which does not play upon the body of the iron will be deflected against the bottom of the iron, and it further forms a'shield keeping the heat from the top wall of the iron.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
and useful, is-
1. Ina device of the character described, the combination of a hollow body, a handle mounted on top of said body, a deflector mounted within the body, a screw passing through the handle, thetop of the body and into the deflector for securing said handle and deflector to the body, and a burner detachably secured to the rear of the deflector, as specified.

3. In combinationin an iron or the character described, a hollowbody, grooves ormed upon the bottom wall of the space within the body, a handle, a deflector, means for securing said handle and deflector to the body, a burner having an arm formed-therewith, and means for detachably securing said burner to the rear of the defleoton.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a hollow body'having a bottom provided with. grooves, side walls formed therewith,

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a hollow body having a bottom provided with grooves, side walls having apertures therein and a top provided with an opening and having projections a shoe, the sides of which are open, a handle secured thereto, a deflector having a slot in the rear thereof and another slot near the top,- a stop formed in the last named slot, a screw passing throu h the'shoe, top of the body and into the eflector, and a burner detachably secured to i he gear of the deflector, for the purpose set ort 6. the combination of a hollow body having a bottom provided with grooves, side walls having apertures therein and a top provided with an opening and having projections formed therewith, a shoe, the sides of which a handle secured thereto, a deflector having a slot in the rear thereof and anotherslot near the top, a stop formed in the last named slot, a projection formed with portion of the deflector adapted to rest against the inner surface of the top, a screw passing through the shoe, body and into the deflector, a burner, an
arm formed therewith adapted toregister with the last named slot, and a thumb screw engaging with the arm for holding the burner in position.
7. In'combination, a hollow body, a deflector, a handle, a screw for securing said handle and deflector to the body, a burner provided with an arm and having anipple formed on its outer end said burner be ng detachably secured to the rear of the deflector, a gas hose adapted to pass over the nipple, and a wire coiled about said hose. 8. In combination, a hollow body, a handle, a deflector mounted within the body, a screw for securing the handle and deflector to the body, a burner detachably secured to the rear of the deflector, and a perforated member mounted in the end of the burner, for the purpose set forth.
