FRIEDRICH CARL KRGER, F HANOVER, GERMANY.
ENGINE HAVING ROTARY PISTON. l
Specification of Letters `Patent.
Application led March '12, 1908. Serial No. 420,691.
To all wlwm 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH CARL KR- cnn, asubjectof the German Emperor, and resident of Hanover,V Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Piston-'ings. for Engines Having Rotary Pistons, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n engines or pumps having' rotary pistons. rlhe pistons of these engines usually are equipped with elements, which in the rotation of the piston engage the entire interior surface of the cylinder, and which are adapted to obtain a constant steamtight divisionV of one half of the cylinder from the. other.
Objects of the invention are to providey an arrangement of these elements, so that they expand in more than one direction, and thus at all times 'frictionally engage the inside Wall of the cylinder and theportions i 1 of the piston wherein they are guided.
In the drawing: Figure 1 shows an embodiment of my invention with a rotary piston in a cylinder in side elevation. Fig. 2 is ar plan View of the samewith parts in section. Fig. 3 showsanother embodiment of my invention With a rotary piston in a cylinder in Side elevation. Fig. 4 is another plan view of the same with parts in section.
The engine comprisesa casing, a. rotary piston and a. shaft., the rotary piston being keyed to the shaft and mounted eccentrically within the cylinder casing. Elements are provided for engaging the inside surface 3 of the cylinder and they may comprise in combination four parts 1, 2, 5 and 6 and a packing strip 4. The structure com rising the parts 1, 2, 5 and 6 constitutes a piston Wing and two of these Wings are provided on the piston, one diametrically opposite to the other. The packing strip 4 extending over the entire length of the cylinder has substantially semicircular cross section and rests in a correspondingly shaped groove of the wing parts 1 and 2. When the piston rotates and the wing is pressed in radial direction against the cylinder wall the packing strip l will slide over the entii e interior surface 3. The Wing parts l, 2, 5 and 6 are wedge shaped, parts 1 and 2 with their in- `clined sides belng placed ou the inclined side of parts 5 and 6, so that the upper and lower faces of the thus combined wing are parallel to each other, forming a substantially prismatic element, adapted to slide in Patented Aug. 30. 191C-k i a radially arranged chamber 8 of the piston.
The juxtaposed wing parts 1V and 2, 5 and 'G respectively, do not abut against each other, so that `gap 12 and gap 1T respectively' are formed between them. The gapsv 12 and 17, as may be seen from Fig. 2, are out of alinement with eachother and are closed bymeans of members 2O and 21, which slide in suitably shaped recesses provided in the wing parts. LGrap 12 is also closed by a wedge 7 engaging the packing strip 4. Those parallel edges of wing parts 1 and 2,
Vwhich are disposed next tothe piston hub and vwhich are separated from each other by the gap 12, arebevelechso that a substantially V-shaped notch 22 is formed between them.
A gas or liquid pressure forcing thewings 75 radially outwardlyagainst the cylinder wall is maintained in the chamber 8, and in the embodiment illustrated in the drawing this pressure is obtained byadniitting steam or some other medium through pipe 10 into one of the annular chambers `9, which communicates with the radially arranged chambers ,S and through them with the other annular chamber 9. The pressure in radial direction is transmitted directly to the wing and as.
soon as t-he wing t is forced radially out-v wardly to the limit of its movement the pressure spreads the wing elements against the guiding sides of the chamber 8.
The wing parts 5 and (l are shaped so thattheir thickness increases toward the hub,
they therefore presenta larger surface to the radial pressure than the `wing' parts 1 and 2, In addition to this they are provided With preferably integrallyfformed lugs 2l and 25 respectively, and a member 11 slides in suitably shaped recesses of these lugs. Any radial pressure exerted upon the. parts 5 and 6 or the member 11 will effect relative displacement of the wing elements 1, 5 and 2, 6 and therefore increase the friction between. the wing and the upper and lower Walls of the chamber 8 until an absolutely steamtight engagement of these parts is attained. The member 11 is provided with a preferably integral wedge shaped lug 23 engaging the V-shaped groove 22, and a radial pressure exerted upon the member 11 will therefore tend toincrexse the distance between the wing parts 1 a-nd 2, forcing them apart. and against the opposite covers of the cylinder. Dowel pin. 14 secured to the wing part 5 and engaging slot 13 intwing part 1,
2l A l v 968,859
and dowel pin 1 6 on wing part 6 engaging slot in wing part, 2 serve for the purpose -of transferring the last described mot-ion of the wing partsY l and-2 to the Wing parts 5 and 6 respectively.V v
Iiitiie yembodiment illustrated in Figs. 3
. and 4 the expansion against the two op osite cylinder kcovers is attainedy in a d1 erent way- The member 11 slidably carried by the lugs of the Wing paits 5 and 6 isk between these lugs provided with a raised portion, into which recesses are cut. These recesses converge radially. Lug 1`8`provided on wing part; 2 and `lug 19k onwing part 1 are slidably seated within these grooves, and a pressure in radial direction against the mem bei' 11, wili cause the wing parts 1 and 2, if they are prevented from following the direction of the pressure, to move toward kthe oppositie covers of the cylinder.y The movement'is transferred to the WingY parts 5 and 6 by dowel pin and 'slet connection designated with the same reference letters as in Figs. l and 2.
Having now fully described my said iii-i vention what I claim and y desire to secure by Letters Patent is f 7 1. In a rotary engine the combination with a cylinder, lof a piston drum provided with a radial chamber extending longitudinally through said drum, four juxtaposed and superposed wing parts arranged by t lpairs within said chamber, the upperpair of said Wing parts being in wedging engagement with the lower pair, lugs carried by one pair of said wing parts, a member in coaction with said lugs and in engagement with the other pair of wing parts, said niember being adapted to displace said other wing parts longitudinally with respect tov the drum, under the pressureot steam iii parts being in wedging engagement with the lower' pair, lugs carried by one pair of said wing parts, a member in coaction with said lugs and in engagement with the other pair of win g parts, said member being adapted to displace said other wing parts simultaneously in opposite direction longitudinally with respect to said drum under the pressure of steam in said radial chamber .and means for admitting steam into said annular chamber.
3. In a rotary engine the combinationV with a cylinder, of a pistonvdrum provided with a radial chamber extending longitudinallyfthrough said .drumv and an annular chamber communicating with said radial' chamber, foury juxtaposed and superposed Wing parts arranged by pairs Within Said radial chamber, the juxtaposed parts of each pair being separated by a gap, the gaps ofA said pairs being out of alinement with each other, elements transversely disposed with. r
respect to said gaps and slidable in each of said parts, pins projecting from the parts of one pair into slots provided in the parts of the other pair iii superposition, lugs carried by one pair of said wing part-s, a member in coaction with said lugs and in engagement with the other pair of said wing parts, said member being adapted to displace said other wing Lparts longitudinally with respect to said drum, undei` the pressure of steam in said radial chamber, and means for admitting steam into said annular chamber.
4. In a piston drum for rotary engines the combination with a chamber radially arranged in the said drum and a piston Wing 'slidably engaged into the said chamber and composed of four juxtaposed and superposed parts arranged by pairs in wedgingk engagement with each other, of'a second chamber arranged behind the saidY piston wing, means for introducing a pressure fluid in the said chamber, laterally directed-guide on the rear surface of each of the parts of lone pair of said wedging members, awedge slidably engaged into the said guides, a
, miter projection arranged on the said wedge and adapted to engage from the rear the gap left between the other pair of wedging members of the Wing, so as to force the said members apart and a tongue and groove connection between the two pairs of wedging members adapted to transmit theseparating motion from one pair.' of members to the other pair, substantiallyas and-for the'purposeset forth.:
Intestiinony whereof I'have hereunto set my. hand in presenceof two witnesses.
