Description
F. S. HARDIN. LEVER LOOKING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 17, 1909.
' 968,659. Patented Aug. 30,1910.
I I Jae/12703.
which shall be equally applicable. whether] rnnenson s. HARDIN, or tos'ANGELEs, oALrronNIA.
LEVER-LOCKING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FnaoUsoN S. HARn'IN, a citizen of the United States of America,
residing a-t'Los Augeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new. and useful Lever-Locking Device; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrn t tion of the invention, such W111 enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'This invention. relates to a. device for locking against. iizoveinent "a lever, such as the brake lover of a niotorychiclc.
An object of the invention is to provide a .portable device of the character mentioned that may be detachably applied to the lever raclrbar of .a motor vehicleithout any alterations in existing parts thereof.
A further.object is to provide a device the lever-"is required to bemo'ved to a for ward position or movedrcarwardl y to apply the brake; it yet further object is to pro- Vide a device that may be applied to motor vehicles having varying spaces between the lever rack bars.
Y invention will be apparent, to those skilled I in the art, from the following description of. forms of construction in which it may be embodied, taken in connection with the'ao- ,3 and 4,-the partl is adaptedto fit against the side and. overthe edge of the rack-bard Still further objects of the invention are to provide a device which shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture. and easily applied in use.
d Other objc-rcts'aud the advantages of'.the
'companying drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a perspective showin one form of the device 1n use; L1g. 2 lo a' perspective of the device; Fig. :5 is a. perspeo-- -tive of a modifiedform of he deviee,-and
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the modified form of the device.
Referring noW to Figs. 1. and 2, the tie-#- vice preferably comprises a part 3 formed to fitthe edge of the rack bar 4:, and may be provided with side flanges '5 carrying the 1 lugs 6 and 7, each ofwhich has an opening 8 substantially in registry with the opening in the other, and adapted to receive the link 12 of apadlock 131 In the form of the device shown in Figs.
and has lugs 15 and 1'6 which are preferably formed asshown in Fig. 3 and spaced-from" Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au so, 1910.
Application filed May 17, 1909. Serial No. 496,644.
I the main body of part 14 to accommodate the rack bar 4c in the space thus provided.
means which may comprise a cylindrical 1:1 and held therein by an annular groove 19 intowhich the end of a. screw 20, secured in part 14, enters. The outer end of portion 18 is provided with a head 21 of such proportions that in one position thereof it lies longitudinally of the i'na'iubody of part 14', while in its transverse position relatively to the main body of part 14, it projects beyond the edgemf the rack bar 4.
Thecylindrical portion 18 hastherein an opening for the insertion of a key 22, and
thereof for the reception of one or more plungers-i-lwhich are in registry with tumblers-'25 in openings 26 in part H. Openings 26 are closed by plz'lgs 27 at their outer ends. Between plugs 27 and plungers 2-3 s 'n:'ings are interposed.
As will be. noted the parts 3 and l-tare made of such length that when the lever extendbetiveen the lever and an abutment; .\'vh;ich latter may be the piece 11,v supporting the end of the rack bar.
t In use the vehicle having been brought to a standstill and the lever moved to set the brake, the device may be applied to the rack bar between the brake lever 19 and the piece '11 supporting the end of the rack bar. The
the case of that form of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the link 12 of the padlock 13 may be passed throi'igh the openings 8 and the padlock locked, or the device as shownin Figs. 3 and 45 may be looked in position by moving head 21 to? occupy a position transversely of the niain body of part l t.
in conjunction with the brake lever when by its engine or otherwise. 1
While one form of apparatus in'wli'ich'the invention may be embodied .has been illustratedand described, it is obvious' that ya.-
inoditications and changes as do not '{tlepart -.fromthe spirit and scope of theinvention. \Vhat is claimed asnew 1s;
The part 14. is provided with looking also openings 23 in the cylindrical surface device. may then be locked in position. In
it has been n'ioved to set the brake, the ve hicle on whichit is applied cannot be moved rious :n'iodifications and changes be madegand the right is reserved to all such' 1; {In a device of the characterdes'cribed,
portion 18 revolublv mounted in said part 10 is positioned to setthe hrahe, they may As will be understood, by using the device 'ibutm -.ing member applied to one edge of the rack or g leveifle reek. bar arrang 1n ieoiiperative relation to the lever, an
nt at one end of the rack bar, a lockbar and interposed between the lever and the abutment'to lock the lever against movefment, the said locking member being bodily removable from the rack bar and being construeted so as to engage both sides of the rack bar, and means carr ed by the middle portion of the lockin men'lber for engaging the opposite edge of the rack bar to' hold the 331d locking member in operative "posit-ion upon the rack bar; 2. -In a device of the character deserlbed,
the Combination of a lever, a rack bar arranged in cooperative relation to the lever, an abutment, a locking member fitting over one edge of the rack bar and interposed be- ].tween the lever and the abutment to lock the lever against movement, a rotatable part carried by the locking member and adapted to engage the opposite edge of the rack bar toretain the locking member in position, and a key controlled plunger engaging the .rotatable' part to hold the same m 3. Ina device of the character described, the combination of a lever, a rack bar ar, ranged in cooperative relation to the lever, 80 a bodily removable locking member fitting over one edge of the rack bar andinterposed between the lever and the abutment to lock the lever against movement, a, rotatable part carried by the'locking member and adapted to engage the opposite edge of the rack bar to retain the locking member in position, and key controlled means upon the locking member for retaining the rotatable part iii-operative position.
In l'EStllllOll) whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, Slate of California, this 7th day of May A. D. 1909.
