CHESTER S. JENNINGS, OE BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO LAMSON CON- SOLIDATED STORE SERVICE COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORA- TION OF NEW JERSEY.
TERMINAL FOR PNEUMATIC-DESPATCH TUBES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER S. JENNINGS, of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Terminals for Pneumatic-Despatch Tubes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in power control for pneumatic despatch tube apparatus, and its object is to automatically start the power into operation upon the insertion of a carrier into the system, and upon the discharge of said carrier at its destination, to automatically shut off the power.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a construction embodying my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation in sec tion of a terminal showing the device in normal position and in connection with the source of power. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the upper portion of the terminal showing a carrier inserted for transmission and the inlet door closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the upper portion of the terminal showing the carrier about to discharge and operating the mechanism for automatically shutting off the power. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of part of Fig. 3 showing part of the switch-controlling mechanism.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The cabinet A (Fig. 1) contains the motor B carrying the worm C; the worm gear D meshes with and is driven by the worm C, said gear D being rigidly mounted on the shaft D which is supported by suitable bearings D The crank E rigidly mounted on the shaft D is connected with the free end of the slotted lever G by the link F, the opposite end of said lever G being pivoted to the support G. The lower or movable part of the bellows H is mounted and adapted to operate within the slot I. The pressure tube J mounted in the upper part of the cabinet A is connected with the upper part of the bellows H, said bellows being stationarily fixed at H. A check valve K is arranged to control the connection of tube J with bellows H. The transmission tube M is connected with the pressure tube J by the casing J, communication being made by means of the chamber Q and the openings Q. The sliding door N controls the mouth of the transmission tube M andis normally held open by the spiral spring P attached to the stud R. v
The diaphragm S is mounted in the easing J, its outer face being open to the atmosphere, the tension upon said diaphragm being adjusted by the spring S and thumb screw S mounted in the extension S of said casing J. The check nut S holds the thumb screw S in position. The latch S is pivoted to the tube M at S and connected with the diaphragm S by the link S. The valve V is pivoted to the tube M at V and is normally held in position to allow the passage of carrier through the tube M by means of the spring V. Said valve V is opened by means of the trip V pivoted at V one end of which trip projects into the tube Mthe other end being adapted to reciprocate the rod V. The upper end of the rod V operates an extension V of the valve V The knife switch T is normally held away from the contacts T by the spring T at its lower end and insulated therefrom. The upper end of said switch T is pivoted at T to the casing J and insulated there from. The circuit Z and Z of the motor B is controlled by the switch T which connects with line wires Z The terminal at the other end of the system is identical with thatshown in Fig. 1. The directions of the air circuits are shown by arrows.
The operation is as follows: The sliding door N being normally open, the operator inserts a carrier X into the transmission tube M and then closes the said door by means of the handle 0 (Fig. 2). Upon the closing of said door N the stud R engages the lower insulated portion of the knife switch T thereby throwing it into connection with the contacts T The latch S now engages the rear end of the door N holding it in closed position by the tension of the diaphragm S The circuit now being completed with the motor B through the wires Z and Z, said motor is thrown into operation and through the medium of the worm C, worm gear D, link F and lever G, the cran E actuates the bellows H. The pressure being transmitted through the check valve K, tube T, chamber Q and openings Q to the transmission tube M, transmits the carrier through said tube M to its destination, see Fig. 3. The carrier X now strikes the trip V closing the valve V by means of the rod V thereby causing a back pressure through the transmission tube M and into the chamber Q of the terminal from which the carrier was despatched, which acting upon the diaphragm S lifts the latch S releasing the sliding door 1T which is opened by the spring P. The carrier in the meantime has discharged from the tube M into a suitable receptacle M. Upon the opening of the door N, the switch T is released from the pressure of the stud R and said. switch is thrown away from contacts T thereby breaking the circuit and throwing out of operation the motor B. The valve V is now thrown back into normal position shown in Fig. 1 by means of the spring V Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
