To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, HOMER C. LA BATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Feeding Ma chines, of which the following is a specifie cation.
This invention relates to machines to suecessively feed sheets of paper one at a time from a pile or stack to printing, ruling, folding, and like machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved machine of this class in respect to the organization and construction of various of lts features, and the in-' vention consists in various constructions and organizations of parts, as fully described and claimed herein.
In order that the various features of my invention may be fully understood, I will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward point out the novelty thereof in the annexed claims.

In practice the shaft S is given a single revolution to each eleven revolutions of the main-shaft, the latter having the speed of the folder or other associated machine, and revolving rapidly to furnish a quick feedoff of the sheets as hereinafter desbribed. The spiral gears drive the shaft S at the same speed. as the shaft S v In the operation of the machine, the initial separation of the top sheet from the pile or stack occurs atthe rear, and-consequently I shall first describe the organization of the parts that accomplish this function.
A pair ofguide rods A, one on each side of the machine, extends'rearwa'rdly from the risers a of the frame, and forms the support for an'adjustable carriage, which supports the devices employed at the 'rear end of the pile of sheets. -This carriage comprises opposite sleeves a, sliding on the rods A .and locked thereon by means of set screws 0, and a. pair of cross-rods c and c whichiare mounted at their ends in the scribed, but the rear-rod 0 does not rotate.
The adjustability of this carriage upon its guides permits the devices carried thereby to be set at any desired point over the greater area of the paper table, whereby the machine is adapted to operate upon sheets of diiferent sizes. 7 I

The bracket-leg 6 is located at the inner end of the plate e, and is curved downwardly and inwardly, as shown in Figs. 10 and'12, with its free endterminatlng ina bearing a, in which a vertical shaft 'e is rotatably mounted. This shaft extends upwardly throu h a channel in'the associated block E, and is provided 'with a key-way e, which is adapted to receive a'spline orfeather on the hub of a spiral-gear e. The ear e is located in a .recess provided in t e underface of the block E, and is held in place by a plate 6 which closes the recess, as shown in Fig. 10. The shaft 6. may therefore be moved up or means of the adjustment provided by the screw-shaft 'e and intermediate parts, and maintains operative relations with the gear a. The rotating shaft 0 is provided with a spiral gear 0 whichmeshes with the gear e. The gear a is provided with a feather to enter the groove or way 0 of the shaft 0 and it is moved'along the shaft, when the corresponding block E is shifted longitudinally thereof, by reason of the fact that it is located in a recess provided in the lateral ear of the block that engages the shaft 0,- as shown in 0 which is mounted in suitable bearings on the bracket-plate 0 just above the bracketarme The shaft 0 extends, forwardly beyond the block E, and carries a rotating pad or pick-up P. The shaft e is provided with a collar 6 to hold it in place, and on its inner end is mounted an adjustable buckler sleeve 0, which is held to rotate therewith in its adjusted position thereon by a setscrew- 6. The pad? is a laminated structure composed of soft rubber disks 6, assembled upon a pin 6 mounted in .the ends of the yoke. As the shaft 6 revolves, the pad is carried around the axis of the shaft as a centerof rotation in the direction of the arrow of Fig-11, and

The holders F are carried on the shaft 0 and are adjustably securedthereon by setscrews- 7', so that they maybe set to agree with the different adjustments of the bnckl'ers. They are .provided with feet f, against which the sheets are buckled, and
with lips P, which hold therearedges of the sheet after it has been drawn forward by the front feeding-devices for the preliminary separation, and prevent the air blast from disturbing the sheet. The holders are .readily attachable to and detachable from the rod 0 by means of the half-collars with which they are provided as shown.
A holding foot is preferably associated with each-.pick-up or. pad, and is adapted to be li'fte'd fromthe sheet-during the interval that the pad is acting thereon. The rotation of the sleeve 0 is transmitted to the shaft 0 by means of the elliptical spur-gear 0 which engages a corresponding gear 0 secured upon the. shaft 0 By this means the rotation of the shaft 0 is ivena varying speed, the parts being so -adjusted that the slow speed of the shaft shall-occur while the bucklers that are driven thereby are in engagement with the paper, and the accelerated 'speedshall occur. whilethe bucklers are revolving around their centers .out of engagement with the. paper. This arrangev ment of gears is shown in detail in Fig. 8.

When the. bucklers have operated to raise the corners of the top sheet against the feet f of the holders, the sheet is fedzforward bythe .frontfeeding devices sufiiciently to draw the rear edge free of the feet but not beyond the action of the-lips f which engage the sheet .until the feeding-off mechanism, hereinafter described, ejects it en- 4 projecting stubs' or heads constituting the front members of the sheet-feeding devices. The stem passesthrough the opening of the lower ear, where it is provided with a crosspin 6 and it is then somewhat reduced in diameter and extended through the opening of the-upper ear.'- The bore of the upper ear is threaded for engagement with the external thread of a hollow screw-bolt b ,pro-
vided with a knurled head I), and adapted to loosely receive the upperend of the stem. The screw bolt bears on a coil spring I), which surrounds the stem and with its ower end bearing on a washer b" on the pin of the stem, whereby the stem is yieldingly mounted in the plate and the pressure of the spring may be varied. The lock-nut 6 holds the bolt in adjusted position. The sole or bearing surface of each foot I) is composed of a laminated structure made up of alternate plates or disks of rubber b and wood or other fibrous material 12 secured together by suitable parts, as shown in Figs. 19, 22 and 23. The rubber plates are larger than the others, and form the contact surfaces, the other plates providing. small air gaps intermediate the rubber plates. Each foot is provided with a guide stem 6 which enters a suitable opening in the plate I)".
From a consideration of the foregoing it is apparent that the feed-heads and bucklers may be adjusted upon their respective carr'iers to accommodate any width of paper that the machine may receive, and that the bucklers may be set nearer to or farther from the heads according to the length of i the sheets.

The disks 8" are mounted on a shaft 8 that is loosely journaled in a pair of swinging arms 8", pivoted to the frame at st? and provided at their rear ends with anti-friction rollers s, that are adapted to be engaged by cams s on the shaft S as shown in Fig. 3. The cams operate the arms when the feed-feet are raised from the pa er, and the opposing disks cooperate to eed the sheet clear of the machine, the length of cooperation being of course dependent upon the length of the cams 8 V The paper table T runs in suitable guides in the frame, and is raised and lowered by suitable screw-shafts t which are connected together for simultaneous operation by a cross-shaft t and miter-gears t. It is obvious that when the latch is disengaged from the lever, the spring t will draw the roller t against the edge of the disk t and into the depression, whereby the pawl is drawn-up -iover one or more of the ratchet-teeth, and when-the roller rides out of'the depression and is returned by the enlarged periphery of the disk to the posi- I tion of Fig. 3, the pawl will be forced down to turn the shaft 25 to raise the table. The unshipping of the latch is preferably accomplished by means controlled-Y by the height of the paper on the table. The latch is secured upon a rock-shaft t one end of which bears in the end frame of the machine and the other in a bracket 25 which is se,
cured by a set-screw upon the air-tube at the center of the machine. The clutch is shown in detail in Figs. 24 I to 28, and comprises a disk h, which is suit ably keyed to the main shaft Syand a driving member ht, which is loosely mounted on the shaft and is constantly rotated by any suitable means, as the gear wheel 8. By means of-the adjustments provided for the bucklers and heads, the machine may operate on difierent sizes of sheets. Allt'he operating devices for therear portions of v the sheet being inounted on a single. carriage, the machine can be readily adjusted to the required size.
The pile of sheets is keptautomatically in operative relation with respect to the bucklers and heads, and the machine imay be quickly started and stopped by the handle, which may be placed in easy reach of the-attendant. in order to give the eed-heads a slow forward movement and a quick return.
