Be it known that I, EDWIN F. Oria, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of vPhiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awnings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in awnings, and more particularly to an improved attachment 'for awnings, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device which will serve to lift'tlie awning when permitted, and which requires a pull on the awning to draw it down where it may be locked in its lowered position.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be attached toA any ordinary form of awning such as is usually.

employed on ordinary doors and windows, and which will overcome the necessity for laborious work required in raising awnings,

and which will raise the awning quickly and hold it securely.

With these and other objects in View, the.'

invention consists in certain' novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

improved attachments to which the awning ends of the rod frame .1 are connected, as will more fully hereinafter appear. These attachments 2 are secured to the window frame, support the ends of the rod traine 1, and serve to pivot the frame l and move it to a vertical position when permitted. The

base plate and the webs of the casting are provided with openings 7 for the .reception of screws 8-"to secure the device in place. These openings 7 areprovided so that the screws may. be driven into the frame from either direction, so that the attachment may be secured inthe most convenient manner.

A tube 9 is mounted to slide in casing 1, and a coiled spring 10'is located in this tube, bears at its inner end against the base .6, and at. its outer end against a screw threaded plug 11 screwed into the outer end of the tube 9, so that the tension ot' the spring may be readily adjusted, or the spring removed and replaced. The tube 9 on-one' side is provided with la seriesA of lteeth forming a rack 12, which engage the with the arm 4 above mentioned. This segnient 13 and the/arm are preferably hollow, so as to accommodate the arm of frame 1. The arm14 is pivoted on a journal' bolt 14, extending through registering openings in Athe casting, and segment 13. nal bolt 14 is also adapted to be projected through the opening 15 in the end of the frame arm and said journalbolt is prefer'- ably secured by a cottei pin 16. ' Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ,Patent is: f

l. A device of the character described, comprisinga casting, an arm-pivoted to the casting, a longitudinally movable rack, a pinion on the arm engaging the rack, and

' a spring pressing against'said rack, substantially as described.

2. A device of the character described,

comprising a casting, an arm pivotally connected to the casting, a segmental pinion on said arm, a tube mounted to 'move longi# tudinally in the casting, a rack on tlietube engaging the pinion, and a coiled spring 'Within the tube tending to move the same longitudinally, substantially as described.`

A device of the character described, comprising a casting, an arm pivot-ally'connected to the casting, a segmental pinion on said arm, a,tube mounted to move vlongitudinally in the casting, a rack on the tube engaging thev pinion, said tube having i11- ternal screw threads in itsV outer end, and a screw-threaded plug screwed into said tubel and engaging the spring, substantially as described.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a casting, an arm pivotally connected t-o the casting, a segmental pinion on said arm, a tube mounted to move longitudinally in the casting, a rack on the tube engaging thepinion, said' tube having internal screw i threads in its outer end,.aA
