Be it known that I, JAMES MoALnAR, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Sprinkler Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dry pipe sprinkler valves, and particularly to that type wherein both the inlet and discharge ports are provided with valves, the one leading to the system being normally held in its closed position by the pressure in the system.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved locking means for the inlet valve, which will hold it securely closed until the pressure in the system is relieved.
A further object is to provide a lever mechanism for controlling the movement of the inlet valve which will not require any delicate or fine adjustments when the valve is being set or put in working order.
The invention'consists generally in providing a locking mechanismbetween the water inlet valve and the one leading to the sprinkler system.

In the drawin 2 represents a casing divided interiorly by 'a transversewall 3 into chambers or compartments 4 andf5, the former having a port 6 communicating with the water supply, and the latter a port 7 ,leading to the system. The wall 3 is provided with a port :8 above and in line with the port 6, and adapted to be closed by a valve 9 carried by a lever 10 pivoted at 11 on one side of the port 8; An auxiliary port 12 is provided in the wall 3 and normally closed-by an auxiliary valve 13 carried by the lever 14, which is pivoted at 15 on said wall. The valves 9 and 13 being arranged to open into the system will-be locked and' securely held in that position when pressure is on the system. A tooth 25 limits the movement of the arm 23 toward the right, and consequently will cause the valve 18 to be heldin its open position. A lever 25 is pivoted at 26 at one end of the lever 19, and has a lug 27 where-- on links 28 are pivoted. These links'have longitudinal slots 29 and an antifriction roller 30 mounted. therein, and adapted to bear on thef-ree end of the lever'l9 between it and the under side of the lug 27. A hub 31 is mounted on a shaft 32 and free to o cillate thereon, and has a recess 33 to receive the upper end of the lever 25, said recess being of sufiicient lengthto allow a limited oscillation of said hub. An arm 3% is provided on said hub having pivoted links pro vided with slots 36 and an antifriction roller 2 37. A hub 38 is loosely mounted on a shaft 39 and carries a yoke 40, between which and said hub the endflof the arm 34 is inserted, the antifriction roller 37 contacting with said hub and with the end of said arm;

to the system. The lever mechanism connecting the auxiliary and inlet valves is then adjusted, so that when the pressure is relieved in the system the auxiliary valve will be automatically opened'and the inlet valve,
unlocked. The compound lever mechanism is positive 'and reliable in its action, and Will require no delicate adjustment in setting the valve. The mechanism is at one side of the inlet and discharge ports, and will not therefore offer any obstruction to the passage of water through them,
I claim as my invention:
1. A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having main and auxiliary discharge ports and an intake port for connection respectively with the sprinkler system and the water intake pipe, valves for said ports, those for the ports leading to the sprinkler system being normally closed by the pressure-therein, and means connecting said sprinkler system auxiliary valve with said water inlet valve whereby the latter will be-locked in its closed position until the pressure is reduced in the system, and said locking means being out of line with said intake and auxiliary discharge ports when the valves are closed and when open, substantially as described.
2. A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having water inlet and main and auxiliary discharge ports for connection respectively with the water intake pipe and the sprinkler system, valves for said ports, said sprinkler system valves being located in the same chamber of the casing and normally closed by the pressure therein, and means connecting said auxiliary valve and said water inlet valve whereby the latter will be locked in its closed position until said auxiliary valve is released by the reduction of pressure in the system, substantially as described.
3. A valve for a sprinkler system com-j prising a casing "having water inlet and main and auxiliary discharge ports for connection respectively with the water intake pipe and the sprinkler system, valves for said ports, said sprinkler system valves being located in the'same chamber of the easing and normally closed by the' pressure therein, means connecting said auxiliary valve and said water intake valve and whereby the latter Will be locked in its closed position until said auxiliary valve is released by the reduction of pressure in the system, and said locking means ofl'ering no obstruction to the fiow of water between said inlet and main discharge ports, substantially as described.
4. 7. A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having ports for connection respectively with the water supply" and the sprlnkler system, a wall dividm said casing into compartments and having a discharge port in line with said water intake port and an auxiliary ort at one side thereof, main disch'arge an auxiliary valves located in the same chamber of the casing and arranged to close their ports respectively and be held in such position by' the pressure in the system, a water inlet valve and means connecting said auxiliary valve and said water inlet valve and arranged to hold the latter in its closed position until the pressure is relieved in the'system and on said auxiliary valve, substantially as described.
8. A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having ports for connection respectively with the water supply and the sprinkler system, and a wall dividing said .eevpse valves arranged to close said ports and be held in their closed position by the pressure in the system, a water inlet valve, an oscillating hub connected. with said auxiliary valve, and a lever mechanism arranged between said tub and said water inlet valve and adapted to hold said Water inlet valve in its closed position until the pressure on said auxiliary valve is released, substantially as described.
9., A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having ports for connection respectively with the water supply and the syniinkler system, main and auxiliary dis charge valves located in the same chamber and arranged to control the flow of water to the system and normally held in their closed position by the pressure in the system, a water inlet valve, a pivoted locking lever therefor, a second lever having an antifric tion bearing on said first named lever, and means connecting said second lever with said auxiliary valve and arranged to be actuated by the reduction of the pressure in the system to disengage said locking levers and release said water inlet valve, substantially as described.

A valve for a dry pipe sprinkler system having water inlet and main and auxiliary discharge ports and valves therefor, the valves for said discharge ports being normally held in their closed position by the pressure in the system, an oscillating hub provided with a weight, a pin connecting said auxiliary valve and said hub and pre venting the oscillation of said hub until the pressure on said auxiliary valve is rel wased, a second hub, and means for holding it against oscillation until released by said first named hub, and locking levers arranged to hold said water inlet valve in its closed .po-
sition and actuated to release the same by the movement of said second named hub, substantially as described.
11. A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having ports for connection respectively with the sprinkler system and the water intake pipe, and having a Wall dividing said easing into compartments or chambers, said wall having main discharge and auxiliary ports, valves for said main discharge and auxiliary ports located in the same chamber-of the casing and adapted to be held in a closed position by the pressure in the system, a valve for the inlet port, means connecting said auxiliary valve and said water inletvalve and normally locking the latter in its closed position until the pressure is relieved in the system upon said auxiliary valve and means on said wall for holding the water inlet valve in its open position, substantially as described.
12. A valve for a sprinkler system comprising a casing having water inlet and main;
and auxiliary discharge ports for connection respectively with the Water supply and the sprinkler system, main and auxiliary' discharge valves arranged to close said ports and be held in their closed position by the pressure in the system, a water inlet valve, an oscillating hub connected with said auxiliary valve, a lever mechanism arranged between said hub and said Water inlet valve adapted to hold said water inlet valve in its closed posit-ion until the pressure on said auxiliary valve is released, an arm mounted on said oscillating hub provided with a weight, said weight being adapted to open said auxiliary valve when the pressure.
