Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led May 22, 1909. Serial No. 497,824.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. BAILEYand CLAUDE F. PURKITT, both citizens of the United States, residing at Willows, in the county of Glenn, State of California, have invented a new and useful 'l`ire-Protector, of whichthe following is a speciiication.
The present invention resides in a protector for pneumatic tires, and especially, for the inner tubes thereof; the object being the production of a protector, which will possess great elasticity. V
Another object of this invention is the production of a tire protector, which is made up of a plurality of links or sections, which may be readily detached. from each other.

In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the protector. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the links 0r sections, .looking at the inner side of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the links or sections looking at the outer side of the same. Fig. 4l is a view of a number of sections or links, shown connected together, looking at the outer surface thereof. Fig. 5 is a View of the same looking at the inner surface thereof.- Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the expansible link, showing the sec tioiis drawn apart.
Referring to the drawings by numerals l designates the protector which comprises a ,plurality of links or sections 2; each link being provided with a concave inner surface and a convex Vouter surface. Each of the sections 2 is provided with a tongue 3 upon one end, which is folded upon the body portion 4, and which constitutes a hook as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Each section or link 2 is also provided with an elongated aperture 5 near the opposite y portion 4L, which extends transversely of the section or link: tector is made up of a plurality of sections and the sections or links are adapted to overlap as shown clearly in Fig. l; the tongue of one section fitting into the slot in the adjacent section and so on until a continuous band of links or sections is formed.

The primary portion 6 is provided with a folded tongueor hook 8 similar to the hook 3 of the link 2 and is also provided with folded sides 9 as shown clearly in Fig. 6. The auxiliary member or portion 7 is provided with an elongated slot 10, and said auxiliary portion is adapted to slide upon the primary member or portion; the folded portion or sides 9, acting as guideways or tracks to prevent the lateral displacement of the auxiliary portion of the primary' p0rtion.
It will be obvious that the primary and auxiliary portions constitute an expansible link thereby adding greatly to. the elasticity of the protector. It will be further obvious that by having a protector formed in accordance with the-present invention, that if any of the sections should become broken or distorted, the same could be replaced by new links, and also that the protector could be which link comprises A detachable metallic'inner tube protector for pneumatic: tires comprising a plurality of links, each link provided with a hook at one end and a slot near the other end, said links overlapping each other when coupled together, and a plurality of sections constituting a coupling link, one section provided with overturned edges, the other section slidably mounted upon said first mentioned section, said lirst-mentioned section pro vided with a tongue adapted to engage the adjacent link and said last-mentioned section provided with a slot adapted to be engaged by the tongue of the adjacent link for connecting the coupling link to the other links.
