To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANNS RAUoH, mechanical engineer, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Munich, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in gas holders or gasometers, and more particularly to that class of gasometers which are made up of one or more telescoping cylinders.
In the generation of gas from coal or the like the quality of the gas passing from the retort or gasifying chamber to the gas holder varies from the beginning of the distilling process to the end thereof. At certain times a gas is produced the specific weight of which is higher and the heating power of which is smaller than that of the illuminating gas of the ordinary quality. If this gas is fed into the gas holder near the bottom of the same, it is gathered at the bottom of the gas holder without being mixed with the lighter gas of the ordinary quality stored in the gas holder. Therefore the composition of the gas supplied to the mains varies within large limits, so that the gas is unsuitable for many purposes.
The object of my invention is to arrange the device for feeding the gas to the gas holder, in such a way, that the quality of the gas is the same throughout, the gas holder, in order to supply a gas of uniform quality to the mains. For this purpose the said feeding device is so constructed that the gas is discharged into the gas holder at or near the top of the latter and is thoroughly mixed with the gas stored in said holder. If now at certain times a gas of higher specific weight is discharged into the gas holder, it falls downward by its gravity from the discharge end of the inlet pipe and during its downward movement it is thoroughly mixed with the gas stored within the gas holder, whereby a gas of uniform composition is obtained.
In carrying out my invention a tube is suspended from the top of the gas holder which telescopes on the inlet pipe extending from the bottom of the gas holder upward. Thereby the gas passing through the inlet pipe is necessarily discharged at the top part of the gas holder.
According to my invention I provide means in combination with the inlet pipe whereby the gas discharged from the inlet pipe at the top of the gas holder is thoroughly mixed with the gas stored Within the gas holder.
For the purpose of explaining the invention two examples embodying the same have been shown in the accompanying drawing in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. 1
In said drawing: Figure 1, is a vertical cross-section of a gas holder and its gas feeding device, the gas holder being provided with a simple bell; Fig. 2, is a horizontal cross-section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 22, and Fig. 3, is a vertical cross-section of a gas holder in which the bell is formed of two telescoping sections.
Referring to the gas holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, a bell shaped cylinder Z) rests in a water tank a in which it rises or falls according to the amount of gas passing into or out of it. Through the bottom of the tank a a gas inlet pipe 0 and a gas outlet pipe-(Z extend upward to a point above the level of the water. To the top part c of the bell b a tube 9 is secured by means of bolts f or the like and the said tube extends downward from a point near the top of the bell b to the discharge end of the pipe 0 so as to inclose the latter. If the bell b rises or falls in the water tank a it takes along the gas distributing tube 9 which telescopes on the inlet pipe 0. The gas admitted to the bell b is discharged from the tube 9 at the top thereof, and if its specific weight is higher than that of the gas stored within the gas holder, it falls downward, and during such downward movement it is thoroughly mixed with the gas stored in the gas holder. The discharge end of the tube 9 is provided with a laterally extending screen or deflector 72. by which the gas is distributed over the area of the gas holder, so that it is more thoroughly mixed with the gas stored in the gas holder.
In Fig. 3 a gas holder is illustrated in which the bell consists of two telescoping sections 6 and 79 From the closed top of the said bell the gasadmitting tube is suspended which also consists of two telescoping sections g and which incloses at its lower end the discharge end of the inlet pipe 0. In this'case also the gas admitted to the gas holder rises to the top part of the gas holder to a point near the cover 6 before it is mixed with the gas stored in the gas holder.
While for the purpose of explaining the invention reference has been made to specific features of construction, I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown, and that various alterations may be made without departing gas inlet pipe, and a screen surrounding the upper end of said gas distributing tube laterally.
2. In a gas holder, the combination with a tank and a bell adapted to rise and fall therein, of a gas inlet pipe extending upward within said tank, a gas'distributing tube secured to the bell so as to share its rising and falling movement, said tube being open near the top so as to discharge gas into the upper part of the bell, the lower end of the tube being adapted to receive gas from the said pipe and having a telescopic connection therewith, and a deflector secured to said tube below the level of its discharge opening.
