To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, RAMON FLonnNr REYNTIENS, a subject of the Kingdom of Belgium, and HENRY JAc Uns MEERTENS, a subject of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, both residing in Oakland, Alameda county, California, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for generating acetylene and which is capable of being used directly as an illuminating apparatus when the gas is permitted to issue directly from the burner nozzle.
The construction and operation of an apparatus embodying the invention will be understood from the following description having reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a generator constructed according to the invention and adapted to be used directly as an illuminating apparatus. This figure shows the ap paratus out of action, while Fig. 2 is a like view of the apparatus in action. Fig. 3 is a detail of a bayonet joint used in the generator shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The generator comprises a container A, preferably of metal and constituting the support of the apparatus. This container A is surmounted by a cap 0 fixedly connected with a cylinder 0? which is connected with a carbid basket 9 by clamps t at the bottom. Between the two cylinders (Z and 9 there is a vertically movable hell it of which the top D carries a cap E filled with wadding or the like, and surmounted by a cock R upon which is carried the burner X. The upper end of the bell is perforated as indicated at i to permit the passage of gas through the wadding. The cover C is fixedly connected with internal clamps a, shown in section in Fig. 2 and in face view in Fig. 3. These plates have a vertical slot '0 at the ends of which are horizontal portions w w, the lower one of which is entered by a vertical slot y with a widened mouth. The reservoir A has inwardly projecting pins 2 adapted to enter the slot y m w and 0. Thus by a bayonet joint movement the carbid or equivalent material carried in the basket can be kept above or below the water as may be desired. The basket 9 carries two grids G G one above the other within its cylindrical wall; the lower one being of finer mesh than the upper so as to retain small pieces of carbid which detach themselves and which pass through the upper grid.
In using this apparatus the reservoir A is filled with water and the cover O and its basket are applied by the bayonet joint, with the pins 2 in engagement with the grooves 00, so that the carbid can be maintained above the water. This is the position of Fig 1. The cap D may be removed and the basket filled with carbid, after which the cap with its hell it is replaced, the bell entering between the two cylinders d and g, and being moved downward until the cap D rests directly on the cover G. Then when the apparatus is to be operated it is sufiicient to lower the entire cover and parts con nected therewith, including the basket and bell, and to hold it down by bringing the pins 2 into engagement with the upper horizontal grooves 00 of the bayonet joint. This is the position of Fig. 2, the carbid being in contact with the water.
The apparatus as illustrated is of metal, but it may be constructed of any suitable material such as glass, porcelain or the like, and may have any suitable form and dimensions.
What we claim is An acetylene generator adapted to serve also as a burner, comprising a reservoir A for water, a basket 9 adapted to be introduced into said reservoir, a cover 0 connected to said basket, means for holding the basket and cover in either one of two positions in which the apparatus is operative and inoperative respectively, a bell h adapted to pass between the basket and the cover, and a cap D surmounting said bell and containing material through which the gas is to be assed, the upper end of the bell being perforated to permit such passage of the gas.
