Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LEON P. Lowe, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Cleansers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of gas cleanser which will enable gas to be purified, scrubbed, or cleansed more conveniently and economically than heretofore.

eferring to the drawing, 1 indicates a rectangular box-like casing provided at the top with a charging opening 2, and at the bottom with openings 3 on both sides 4, for the removal of the material used for purifying or scrubbing, all of said openings being closed by suitable doors 5. Said casing is formed on one side with a gas inlet openin 6 near the bottom and an outlet opening at the top.
Extending between the ends 8 of the easing are two closed walls 9 converging toward each other downward forming a chute or hopper, and suitably strengthened by angle irons 10 extending between the end walls 8. Said walls 9 are secured at the top to the sides A of the casing at a short distance below the gas outlet, and the side edges of said walls are secured to the walls of the casing, but said walls do not extend to the bottom of the casing. The purifying material, such as lime, or the so-called iron oXid or iron sponge, is fed into the apparatus by the charging opening 2 at the top, and falls between the downwardly converging walls 9, on to the bottom 11 of the easing, spreading outward on said bottom from the lower free edges of said walls. The chute 9, the walls of which are wholly closed, extends to a comparatively short distance on the bottom of the casing, less than the depth of the chute, so that the material emerging from said chute spreads out over the bottom of the casing in the form of a pyramidal pile into which pile the gas enters and then ascends through the material in the chute. At the bottom, the material at the ends of the casing is maintained out of contact with said ends by means of narrow sloping partitions 12, which thus form, with the end walls 8 and bottom 11, conduits 13 for the gas, and permit the gas to pass freely from the side of the chute at which it enters to the opposite side, and thus to enter the purifying material on both sides.
The cleanser is used in the following manner: The gas enters by the inlet 6 and part of it passes by the end conduits 13 to the opposite side of the purifier. The gas, being unable to escape upward between the sloping walls 9 and the sides 4 of the casing, enters the purifying material at the bottom and passes upward therethrough, being purified thereby, and escapes by the gas outlet 7. The purifying material at the bottom, where the gas first enters, is the foulest, and is the portion which it is most desirable to first remove. This is done by, first shutting off the gas, then opening the doors at the bottom, inserting suitable pushers through the doors at one side and pushing the material out through the doors at the other side. Since a small part of the material can thus be pushed out at one time, this operation is not diilicult or laborious. As the foul material is removed at the bottom, the purifying material sinks between the converging walls of the chute, and fresh material should then be added at the top. Of course, the foul material can be renovated and used over again in the same way as is done at present. This arrangement avoids the great expenditure of time and labor necessitated in .the present method, in which the purifying material is spread upon trays, the trays are removed, the material dumped therefrom, fresh material is placed upon the trays, and they are then placed in the purifiers. On account of the large mass of the material used for purifying, such an opera tion is laborious and expensive. Again, the invention greatly economizes in the amount of purifying apparatus required. In addition, it greatly increases the efliciency of the purifying material, as only the foul portions are removed.
It will readily be seen that the use of the above apparatus is not confined to that of purifying gas, as it can also be used for cleansing gas, by filling the space between the converging walls with the proper material.
It is also evident that continuously operat ing mechanical means might be introduced for moving the material at the bottom outward through the doors, for renovating said material, and for then charging it into the top of the purifier to be used over again.
I claim 1. In a gas cleanser, the combination of a casing having a closed bottom, a downwardly tapering chute within the casing open at the bottom, and having wholly closed sides, and separating the interior of the easing into two compartments, one connected with the bottom of said chute and the other with its top, a gas inlet connected with the former compartment, a gas outlet connected with the latter compartment, said casing being provided with means for feeding purifying material into said chute, and means for permitting the removal of purifying material between the bottom of the chute and the bottom of the casing, substantially as described.
2. In a gas cleanser, the combination of a casing having a closed bottom, a downwardly tapering chute within the casing open at the bottom, and extending to a distance from the bottom of the casing less than the depth of the chute, and separating the interior of the casing into two compartments, one connected with the bottom of said chute and the other with its top, a gas inlet connected with the former compartment, a gas outlet connected with the latter compartment, said casing being provided with means for feeding purifying material into said chute, and means for permitting the removal of purifying material between the bottom of the chute and the bottom of the casing, substantially as described.
