CHIMNEY-HELMET FOR GOOD DRAFT AND WEATHER PROTECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 4, 1909. Serial No. 531,381.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILHELM Home, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney -I-Ielmets for Good Draft and WVeather Protection, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to chimney caps or cowls which are adapted to discharge the smoke, &c., from the chimney in the direction the wind is blowing, and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel antifriction connection between the cowl and the chimney pipe, so that said cowl will be freely rotatable on the said pipe.
In connection with the foregoing the in vention also contemplates a novel type of vane for the cowl.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features involved are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the improved chimney cap or cowl. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional View thereof taken on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional View taken on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the hanger bearings of the cap or cowl. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the bearings of the chimney p1 e.

Adjacent its upper edge, the pipe 1 is pro vided with regularly spaced openings 5, each openinv being spanned by a vertical shaft 6 rotatably mounted in bearing 7, said shafts carrying collars 9 between which an anti friction roller 9 is mounted, said roller being of glass or other rustless material arranged so that it projects beyond the outer surface of the pipe 1. An external horizontally arranged flat flange 1O surrounds pipe 1 below the rollers 9 said flange being provided with regularly spaced openings 11 that are spanned by a shaft 12 rotatably mounted in bearings 13 on said flange 10, said shaft being provided with collars 14 and a roller 15, also of rustless material, similar to that described in connection with shafts 6.
The cowl or cap 16 is preferably of a semispherical form, one portion thereof being cut away to provide an outlet 17. Said outlet is formed by slitting the material of the cowl, and bending the slitted portion upward to provide a channeled vane 18 that projects outwardly from the powl and overhangs the outlet 17 The cowl 16 has a flat annular horizontal base flange 18 the upper surface of which has the flat bifurcated body portion 19 of hanger bearing fastened therein. Said hangers are regularly spaced apart and have their outer end angularly bent as indicated at 20 to overlap, in spaced relation, the said flange 18, and terminate in an inwardly projecting shaft 21 equipped with collars 22 between which an antifriction roller 23 is mounted, said roller being of glass or other rustless material.
In assembling the device the cowl is placed over the upper end of the pipe 1 with its flange 18 resting on the roller of the flange 10 of said pipe, and the roller of the upper end of said pipe being in contact with the lower portion of the cowl. The hanger bearings 19 of the cowl are hooked over the flange 10 with their rollers in contact with the under surface of said flange. It will be seen that this manner of assembling the parts of the invention prevents frictional cont-act of any part thereof, thereby assuring of the cowl readily responding to any changes in the wind. And through the described manner of forming the vane integral with the cowl, provides a simple yet exceeding strong device for holding the cowl in the proper position.
Preferably the point of junction of the vane and cowl is reinforced as indicated at 24c.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A device of the character described comprising a chimney pipe, an external flange carried by the upper portion thereof, antifriction rollers carried by said flange and the upper end of said pipe, a cowl fitted over the upper end of said pipe and contacting with the rollers therein, a base flange carried by said cowl and contacting with the rollers of the pipe flange, hanger bearings carried by the flange of the cap and over- Patented Aug. 9, 1910. i
lapping the flange of the pipe, and antifriction rollers carried by the hanger bearings and contacting with the under surface of said pipe flange.
2. A device of the character described comprising a chimney pipe having regularly spaced vertically arranged rustless rollers at its upper end, an external flange carried by said pipe below said rollers, regularly spaced rustless rollers carried by said flange, a cowl having a flanged base rot-atably fitted over the upper end of said pipe and contacting with the pipe rollers and the flange rollers, regularly spaced hanger bearings carried by said base and overlapping the flange of the pipe, and rustless rollers carried by said bearings and held in contact with the under surface of the pipe flange.
