Be' it known that I, EUGENE H. TAYLOR, ofHyde Park, the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, acitizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Imitovement inl Gumming Mechanism More "specially-Adapted for Use in Paper-Box ll/Iaking, of which the following is a specification. l
The purpose ofthis invention is to insure theguuiming of the blanks before they are folded. f yIn the class of-iiiacliiiies for which the gu-ininenisespecially designed, the blanks are placedhin a hopper and each is then gumn'iedqbefore being,` delivered to the folding mechanism. A perfectly rigid gummcr is not'always effective for the purpose for the reasoi'ithatthe surface to loe gummed is often not absolutely parallel withY the plane of thegumming surf-ace so that the gommer willfnot come into propel' contact therewith and portions of thesurface will not be gunnned' at all.

a, a1 are guides on the side of the hopper A in which the rod D is reciprocated by the rocker arm C and the parts which operate it. This rod D also carries an arm d havingat its end an eye d1 which slides upon aguide rod d2 hung` from the side wall of the hopper A. The lower end of the drod D is threaded and an adjusting nut d3 screws thereon, to raise and lower the horizontal arm E upon which the g'umnier is carried. For this pur# pose the arm E is provided .with a hub e which has a longitudinal extension upon one side of it. In this extensioiiis a groove e in which tits a lateral extension Zt from the nut da. By this construction the parts are easily put together and the turning or the nut cl3 will positively raise and lower the arm E.. A set screw e locks the hub c and arm E in place when its position has once been determined.
lflhe guinmer comprises two rectangular frames F, F1 adapted to imprintl upon the blank corresponding gumming surfaces such as are shown in Fig. (S at F2. he gumnier l is first submerged in the ,quin in the tank B and is then lifted to imprinta gunnned sur face on the under blank in the hopper. To enable it to conform to irregularities iii the surface of the blank it is rendered capable of movements independent of the reciproeating` movement given to its supporting rods D and E; for example: a ight rocking' movement about the axis of the rod E and a slight rocking movementaround the axis of the rod H which is at right angles to the rod En The transverse rocking movement around the axis of the rod E will first be described; A
G is a sleeve which is grooved on one side as at y] to receive a collarv 71, fixed on the shaft ll which carries the uuuuing` frames F, This sleeve G is adjustable on the rod E so as to move the ygununer toward and from the rod D for purposes of adiustmenh and for this purpose thc slee G prei ded with a slot g in which engages a projection g2 upon the nut y which turns upon the threaded extremity of the rod E, this construction being` identical with. that of the parts(2 and e described above. The .rod E is grooved .along its under side as shown at g4 and into this groove the screw g5 passes Fig. e, this slot is slightly wider than the end of the screw so that a, slight rocking `throuqh the sleeve G. As will be see-n from movement is allowed to the sleeve G and the parts supported thereon. This gives the necessary play about theaxis of the rod E, the shoulders or side walls of this groove serving as stops to prevent this motion from being too great.

The rod H furnishes the cross axis about which the gunim'ing frames turn and it also serves as a means of adjusting the frames toward and from each other. F or this latter purpose the rod -H is provided with threads 71,1 at each end, one of these threads being a right-handed and the other a lefthanded thread. From the outer wall of each frame there project downward two straps f2 'the ends of which are connected by a screw f3 and between each pair of straps is a nutfl through which a threaded end oit the rod H passes. The screw f5 serves to clamp the nut between the-straps. A bearing f* is also provided in the wall of each frame through which the rod H also passes. The rod H is also provided with a thumb head h2 by ,which 'it may be turned to cause the frames to approach or separate.. In addition the sleeve G carries arms J, J1, each of which has at its end a collar j, j1,through reject laterally arms These arms exend outward from themedial line of the framesF, F1 to a position underneath their walls, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4t, and as there shown there is normally a slight space between the top of the extremity of each arm and the opposing surface of the gummiiig frame. These arms are rigid and, as the frames are free to turn upon the rod H, one edge or the other of the frame may strike upon the extremity of one of these rods as circumstances require. The main feature of my invention is mounting the gummer so that it will conform to the plane4 of the under surface of the blanks, and it is evident that' there are other means for mounting` the gun'imer, than those above described, whereby the desired result may be accomplished. In some eases -the mounting ot the glimmer upon a single axis may be suliicient, but the use of two cross axes is preferable because of the greater range of motion it allows the guinnier; a range practically universal. Moreover, in some eases each gumming. Vtrame may be supplied with its own transverse axis if thought best. The details ot construcvIty obvious also that this gun'imer, while especially fitted for gumming box blanks, may.. if lts Vgui'nniing surface he properly lshaped be used for gumming envelop blanks or otherr surfaces. g
What I claim my invention is 1. In-.agumming mechanism, a horizontal shaft, a gumming frame mounted to oscil- `:trames simultaneously on said shaft.
3. In a gumming mechanism, a horizontal shaft, gumming frames located to be oseillated thereon, and means for adjusting said frames simultaneously toward and 'from each other on said shaft.
4. In a gumming. mechanism, a horizontal shaft and a gummin frame having a b aring adapted to eneirle said shaft and' allow said frame a limited oscillating movement thereon, means for supporting said horizontal shaft comprising a shaft at right angles thereto, and means adapted to allow said ii'rst-named shaft to oscillate-about said second-named shaft, asset forth.
5. In a gumming mechanism, a glimmer mounted on two axes at right angles to each other and provided with stops whereby the degree of oscillation of said glimmer around said axes may be limited in combination with said axes.
6. In a gumining mechanism, means for supporting gummers comprising a horizon talrod, a pair of gummers located one on eaclnside of said rodand adapted to havea limited movement about Said rod, as de? scribed.
7. In a gumming mechanism, means for supporting gummers comprising a horizontal rod, gummers located on'eaeh side of said rod-and adapted to oscillate thereon, and means for supporting the said gummers upon said horizontal rod comprising a rod running at right angles thereto.

9. In a giunming mechanism, a reciprocating rod, a. horizontal rod carried thereby, gummers, means for supporting said gummers upon said horizontal rod adapted to oseillate thereon, and means for adjusting said gummers to and from said reciprocating rod, as described.
