To all whom it may concern: A
',Be it known that I, JOSEPH Mnssmenm a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Spoke-Extractor, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device for extracting spokes from Yhubs of wheels, etc.,
embodying clamps for tightly engaging the a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to beun-v derstood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described. Y

Referring to the drawings A designates a hydraulic jack whose supply chamber'or casing B is attached to a Huid tight cylinder or chamber B, said casing and chamber having a valved communication, .within which chamber is the ram or piston C, the latter having connected with its exterior end as at C', the legs D, whose feet E are adapted to be rested on the hub F, from which spokes are to be extracted. The supply chamber B is on the outer end of the L- cylinder B and contains a. ressure cylinder,

Gdesignates a crosshead or yoke, which is connected with rods H, the latter extending in the longitudinal direction of the device the same as the piston bars D and hav- Y ingy the ends opposite to said yoke Gr con nected as at J with the wall of the chamber B of the hydraulic jack A. The yoke G is of-the order of an open frame, within which are the clamps K, whose outer-faces are wedge-shaped and whose inner faces are serrated as at L, said clamps being adapted to occupy positions on opposite sides of a spoke to be .extractedand the serrations L to engage said spoke. The opposite sides of the inner face of the yoke G have wedge-shaped walls M, which are adapted to ride on the wedge-shaped faces of the clamps K, when the yoke receives motion, and thusgra'dually tighten the clamps-against the spoke. 'The opposite sides of the inner face of the yoke have also therein the recesses N to receive freely the legs D. In order to prevent upward-displacement of the clamps from the yoke G, the lower. ends of the former have screws F connected therewith, the same projecting outwardly from the clamps, so
' that when the latter are raised to full extent, they abut against the yoke as stops, the effect of which is evident.
The operation is as follows z-The legs E are placed on a hub, and the clamps' occupy positions on opposite sides of the spoke to be extracted from said hub, as most plainly shown in Fig. 2. The hydraulic jack is then operated, whereby the water or duid enters the chamber B under ressure, as usual in such cases, The ram remains stationary under said pressure, while the connected legs D are seated on the hub. As the shell or casing of the jack is freely tted on the ram, it receives motion in thedirection of the arrows, and draws with it the rods H and the yoke G, the latter acting as a follower` and acting first upon the clamps K to tighten them against the spoke, and next,`carry1ng the clamps with said yoke, and thus the engaged spoke follows the clamps and is thereby extracted from the hub. The hydraulic jack is now o erated, whereby the water or fluid leaves t e chamber B and enters the other chamber B, thus relieving said chamber B of pressure, when the shell or casing when the legs are properly seated on the hub.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

2. In a spoke extractor, ahydraulic jack cylinder, a fluid-supply chamber connected with the outer'end' of said cylinder, a piston Within said cylinder, thrust-sustaining bars extending from the outer'end of said piston and adapted'to straddle a spoke, rods secured to said cylinder and projecting in the same direction as said thrust bars, a cross head carried by said rods, spoke-engaging devices in said cross head, and afpressure '-cylinder, a plunger, and operating means for said plunger in said chamber, said piston with the attached thrust bars being staing'movable outwardly on sai iston.
3. In a s oke extracti device, a saddle disconnected -from said Il)device adapted to straddle a shouldered spoke and having its sides adapted to be seated on a hub, and means on said saddle adapted to engage the sides of a spoke to steady said saddle thereon, said saddle having means on top for freely seatin thereonv the thrust-bearing bars of said cvice.
