Description
UNITED ASTATES. PATENTA OEEIcE.
MERRITT GALLY, 0E RYE, AssreNoR rro ALLEN CARPENTER, oERocHEsTER,
` NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 96,577, dated November 9, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MERRITT GALLY, of Rye, in Westchester county and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Printing-Press, called The Universal Printing-Machine, and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, Sheet 1, represents a side view of plate G, with slippingt-oggle D D in position for making the impression. Fig. 2 represents plate U in its second position, removed from the-position for the impression; also, thesecond position of slipping toggle D D. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, represents a type-bed, B, (side vew;) also, the combination of parts used forgiving motion to the inking-rollers. Fig. 4 represents a second view of the sli p-gear, forming a part ot the combination ot' parts used for giving motion to the inking-rollers. Fig. 5, Sheet 3, represents the relative positions ot the parts claimed just before the impression is given.
Instead of swinging the vibrating plate C upon a pivot, as in other presses, l support the same upon the curved rocker or rockers E E, which rest upon the rocker-seat or rockerseats P P. Thus constructed, the plate C may be perfectly balanced, by adjusting the rockerseat or rocker-seats I? P with respect to the center' of gravity of plate U, without the use of counter-weight. v
The plate C may be used either as a bed or l platen.
For making the impression, I construct a slipping-toggle, as follows: I pivot the arm D to the plate C, and support the saine (arm D) by means of a stop, g, at its pivoted extremity.
I allow the arm D to drop below the arm D after the impression, and as the plate C moves backward the arm D slides by the arm D as represented by Dl D. When the types are placed upon plate B the plate C is used for the reception ofthe sheets, and vice versa.
The inking-rollers R R are carried over the types by the action of the pulley K with strap, cord, or chain M.
The pulley K is moved, and also allowed an interval of rest, by means of the hanged slipgear I J, holding the hiking-rollers up against the distributing-cylinderL during the iinpression, after which they are allowed to roll down, and are then immediately drawn up to their former position. The iiange or uncut portion of the gear holds the pulleyK in position during its state of rest.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy l. The plate G, use'd either as bed or platen of a printing-press, when said plate is supported upon a rocker or rockers and rockerseat .or rocker-seats, or their equivalents, whether said rocker-seat or rocker-seats are made fixed or adjustable, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The arms D andD, in combination with stop g, or their equivalents,forming a slippingtoggle, substantially as herein set forth;
3. The pulley K, strap, cord, or chain M, and lianged slip-"gear I J, combined and constructed 'as herein described,landpfor the purpose herein set forth.
'MERRITT GALLY.
