flange' 12,- with which the upper section 13 of the door coperates, movement of the door, when the lower section is raised.
14 represents the lower section of the car door, from the outer face of which elongated flanges 15 project, and journaled in the upper portions of them is a horizontally disposed shaft 16, upon each end of which a pinion 17 is journaled. These pinions operate through openings 18 of the lower section of the car door, and engage rack bars 19, carrie-d bythe upper section thereof. The shaft 16 is also mounted in additional bearings 20 of the lower section of the door. Carried centrally .of vthe said shaft, and movable therewith, are ratchet wheels 21 and 22, the teeth of which are arranged' in opposite directions, in order that the pawls 23 and 2tmay slip by the ratchets, when either one of the ratchets is operated in one direc-- tion or theother. When itis desired to raise the lower section of the door, or lower the upper section, the ratchet wheel 21 is op- 25 erated, but when being operated to accomout of engagement lower section,
portion of the upper manipulated, a downward plish this feat, the pawl of the ratchet 22 1S raised from engagement with its ratchet. If .the upper section of the door is being lowered, while the pawl of the ratchet 22 is section of the door ment by the device If it is desired to close either section of the door independently, for instance, the `the upper section is. secured against downward movement, by the pivoted members 26 (which are mounted in bearings 27 of the door opening), and are adapted to engage beneath the ange 2S of the upper section of the door. When itis desired to close the upper section of the door, the ratchet 22 is operated, while the'y pawl of the ratchet 21 is raised out of engagement, and when the ratchet 22 is thus ressure upon the lower section of the door is enacted, which -will cause the lower section of the door to engage the bottom of the ear structure. These ratehets are operated by a lever 20 is secured against moveo: Ik n (which is loosely journaled or mounted upon' the said shaft 16), and is provided with lateral projections 30 and 31, which are designed to engage behind the teeth of the ratchets, as the lever is oscillated vertically.
The lower section of the door is provided with transversely disposed handles 32 and 33,' whereby the said section may be raised or lowered, or swung inwardly of the structure, when it is not desired to utilize the ratchet mechanism, and especially to swing .the door inwardly, when the upper or lower with its ratchet, the lowerl to prevent inward l l l, l
ing bolt or section is released in order that such may be acconipliehed.
To prevent the door from moving inf-1 wardly when the upper section is lowexid, the lower section is provided with a hook 84, which is designed to be .received by a loo i; 35 of the door. This hook 34: is caused lo engage said loop by forcing' the lower section of ihc door downward.
The upper section of the door, at the side designated by the character 3G, is formed into a hollow roll 3T, which receives a vertically disposed rod 38, which roll and rod act as `:guiding` means for the door. The lower section oli the door has provided upon one sido thereof, and on the inner lace adja cent the bottoni, a loop flO, which also re ccives the said vertically disposed rod, and which is designed to as. st in guiding;- lli-e door when raised or lowered oi' :ict as a pivotal connection i'or thc door,
Upon the sides oli' both notions ot' the door are tlanges 4l, which inlerengage with one another, in order to guide the two sections of the door with regard to each other, t'or example when it is desired to raise or lower one or the other oit the sections. Secured to the inner face of the cui structure is `slidi nicniber 4-2, behind which the door when swung oniplclely back adjacent to the said inner Vl'ace of the car structure is disposed, in order lo hold the door in such position.
ll'roin the foregoing, the cssenl ial tentures, elements and the operation of the device, together with the .simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent.
llavinn` thu,` 'fully set forth the inif'cntion, what is claimed as new and useful A tno-sectioned pivoted cur door, one ot the sectioi'is having;` racks, while the other section is provided with a horizontally disposed rotating shal't ha ving pinions to engage said racks, whereby either section of the door may be raised or lowered, a ratchet and pawl mechanism 't'or operating' the shaft, means for operating" the ratchet said upper sect ion havinga flange upon its upper por tion, said car having' pivoted members to engage below said flange to prevent downward vertical movenunn. oi? the upper section when the lower section is raised or lowered.
In testimony whereof wo have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
