To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. PAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Bucket-Ears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the ears used for securing the bails to sheet metal buckets or pails and has for its object the provision of an ear that is simple in construction, easily applied and effective in operation.
The construction of my improved bucket ear will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view of my improved bucket ear dismembered, Fig. 2, a view showing the two parts of the ear secured together and ready to be assembled in the bucket, Fig. 3, a sectional view showing the ear in place in the bucket, Fig. 4, a front view of a fragment of the bucket and ear, and Fig. 5, a rear view.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The bucket 1 is formed with a hole 2 on each side where the ear is to be located and has an inwardly extending flange 3 surrounding the hole. The ear consists of a cup-shaped member 4: with a hole 5 in its center for receiving the bail and before assembling in the bucket has its edge extending outwardly as shown at 6.
7 indicate a disk having a central circular depression 8 of the same diameter as the inside of the cup-shaped member t so as to insure centering the disk on the cup when assembling the ear.
In assembling the bucket and ear the disk 7 is first laid on the cup shaped member and with its central depression 8 engaging the inside of said member. The edges of the cup-shaped member and the disk are then subjected to pressure so as to bend them back on the cup-shaped member as shown at 9 in Fig. 2. The assembled cup and disk are then inserted in the hole 2 from the inside so that the flange 3 is inclosed between the side of the cup-shaped member 4: and the bent back portion 9. The joint is then subjected to pressure so as to turn the flange 3 outwardly inclosing the bent back portion 9 between the flange and body of the bucket, and when the flange 3 and bent back portion 9 are pressed together a double seam 10 is formed that is not only liquid tight, but of sutlicient strength to support the weight of the bucket and contents when suspended from the ears.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is A bucket ear comprising the combination of a bucket having a circular hole therein and an inwardly extending flange surrounding said hole, the ear consisting of a circular cup-shaped member having a central hole therein for receiving the bail and an outwardly extending edge and a disk covering the inner side of said cup-shaped member and having a circular depression to fit the top of the cup, and its edges superposed on the outwardly extending edge of the cupshaped member, the edges of said cupshaped member and disk bent back on themselves, engaging the flange on the bucket and forming a double seam therewith.
