To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER T. BROWN, citizen of the United States, and resident of Syr cuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and the object of said invention may be generally stated tobe to'simplify certain features of the construction such as the escapement and carriage release mechanism and the ribbon vibrator mechanism.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of. construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the various views, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken centrally through the machine and disclosing a sufficient number of parts of a the machine to illustrate my invention in its embodiment therein. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showing one of the guides for the universal bar.
This case is a division of my application I Serial No. 327,706, filed July 25, 1906.
The frame of the machine comprises a base 1, corner posts 2 and a to plate 3. Key levers 4 are pivoted at 5 to epending hangers 6 secured to a member 7 supported on the base of the machine. The key levers are each provided with a finger piece 8'and extend rearwardly of their pivots and terminate at their rear ends in a single line transversely of the machine. Each key lever has a dependin arm 9 hooked at its lower end at 10 where it is connected to one end of a contractile spring 11, the spring being connected at its opposite end to a rod 12 secured to the base of the machine.
The rear end of each key lever is pivoted at 13 to a link 14 which in turn is pivoted at its rear end as at 15 to an upright sub-lever 16. The sub-levers 16 are pivoted at 17 to hangers 18 secured to the frame of the ma chine. Pull links 19 extend forwardly from the upper ends of the sub-levers and are pivotally connected at 20 with the segmentally arranged upwardly and rearwardly striking type bars 21. Each type bar .21 is provided with a rearwardly extend- 1ng) arm 22 adapted to bereceived in a lfurcated type guide 23 formed on the associated type bar hanger 24. .The various type bar hangers are secured to a segment 25 which in the resent instance is adapted to receive a shi tin movement to change the case position of t e type bars. The'type bars are supported at their forward ends by a pad 26 mounted on a segmental support 27 connected to receive a vertical movement with the type bar segment. A universal bar 28 is arranged above and transversely of the key levers 4 at the rear ends thereof. This universal bar is connected to depending links 29' which are guided in loops formed at the inner ends of bracket arms 29 (Fig. 2) secured to the side plates of the base. The lower ends of the links 29 are pivoted to rearwardly extending vcrank arms 30 which project from a rock shaft 31 mounted to turn on bearing screws 31 threaded through tapped openings in the base of the machine.
Each key lever 4 and'its associated link 13.cons titute a toggle, the members of which are in line in the normal position thereof as shown in full lines, the toggle being broken and moved to the dotted line position on the depression of a key, to effect an actuation of the as'sociatedsub-lever 16 and thus move the connected type bar to the printing position.
The rock shaft 31 is also provided with a rearwardly extending centrally disposed crank arm 32 connected at its rear end with an upwardly extending pull link 33 which in turn is pivotally connected at 34 with a lever 35 pivoted at 35 to a depending bracket 36 on the to plate of the machine, the lever extending ore and aft of the machine and being horizontally disposed and situated directly beneath thetop plate. This lever 35 is a lever of the first order and is pivotally connected at its forward end with a ribbon vibrator 37 guided in itsvertical movement by a bracket 38 secured to the top plate 3 of the machine at 39. The rear end of the lever 35 carries feed dogs 40 which are preferably formed integral with the lever, the uppermost of said dogs being bent laterally to bring them out of alinement. The lever 35'is also formed with a of a contractile spring 42 is connected, the rear end ofsaid' spring being connected to a threaded rod 43 which passes freely through an opening in a bracket 44 secured to the top plate of the machine at 45. A thumb nut 46 is received on the rear end-of the threaded rod 43 to effect an adjustment of the rod and a corresponding adjustment of the spring 42 to vary the force of the spring on the lever The feed dogs 40 cotiperate with an escapement wheel 47 disposed in a'horizontal plane directly beneatli the top plate. The escapement wheel is connected with a vertically disposed shaft 48 by a set screw 49 which is received in a threaded openingin a hub 50 of the escapement' wheel and bears at its inner end against the shaft 48. The shaft 48 passes through the top plate, being received in a hollow post 51 which projects upwardly from the top plate of the machine in the rear of the carriage. A collar 52 is secured to the shaft 48 by a pin 53 to support the shaft in place. The collar 52 and the hub 50 of the esca ement wheel cotiperate with the bearing For the shaft 48 to prevent a longitudinal movement of the shaft in its bearing. A feed pinion 54 is received on a shaft 48 and loosely surrounds the same, the pinion being provided with a depending supporting hub or portion 55 which bears at its lower end against the sleeve 52. The pinion is also provided with upwardly extending ratchet-like teeth 56 which form one section of a two-part clutch. The other section of this clutch is formed by teeth 57 on a sleeve 58, which sleeve has a rectangular opening therein for cotiperation with the rectangular portion 59 formed at the upper end of the shaft 48. The upper end of the shaft is enlarged as indicated at 60 to prevent a displacement of the clutch section 58 from the shaft 48. Suflicient upward movement, however, is afforded the clutch section 58 alon the squared portion of the shaft 48 to dlsengage the teeth 57 from the teeth 54 on the feed pinion. The clutch member 58 is likewise provided with a circumferential flange 61 beneath which is received a flange 62 formed on a bar 63 which extendsthroughout the length of the carriage and is preferably formed as a cross bar or bail provided at its ends with arms 64 pivoted at 65 to end plates 66 of the carr1a e.
ne or both of the arms 64 may be extended forwardly beyond their pivots to form release levers 67 provided at their forward ends with finger pieces 68. Each arm 67 is preferably slotted at 69 to receive a pin 70 which projects outwardly from a side plate 66 of the carriage. A depression of either finger piece or release key 68 is effective to move the clutch section 58 upwardly out of engagement with its companion clutch section to release the feed pinion 54. The carriage is then free to be moved in either direction independently (if the escapcment mechanism), the pinion 54 being revolved at this time freely on the shaft 48 through the constantly maintained geared connection between the pinion and a feed rack 78 on the carriage. -When, however, pressure is released on the depressed key 68 a suitable spring is effective to restore the parts to normal position, lowering the clutch section 58 in engagement with its companion clutch section on the feed inion. This engagement of the clutch sections positively connects the feed pinion to rotate with the shaft 48 through the engagement of the clutch section 58 with the squared portion of the shaft. The carriage which is driven by a spring drum (not shown) may be of any suitable construction but the carriage shown in the present instance is somewhat similar to that disclosed and claimed in my Patents Nos. 910,987 and 935,776,

The carriage comprises two angular plates 71 and 72 grooved for the reception of anti-friction balls or rollers 73 which are likewise received in opposite grooved faces 74 of a track or guide bar 75 secured to upright projections 76 which extend from the top'plate of the machine. A paper table 77 is secured to the members 71 and 72 of the carriage and the feed rack 78 is fixedly connected to the carriage and is at all times maintained in mesh with the feed pinion 54. A cylindrical platen 79 is mounted in a carriage in the usual or any suitable manner.
At one or both sides of the machine I have provided key levers 80 each provided with a depending arm 81 hooked at its lower end as at 82 to pass beneath and engage the associated crank arm 30. The forward ends of these levers 80 are connected to the usual space key 83. The levers 80 like the key levers are pivoted intermediate their ends to hangers such as the hangers 6 so that a depression of the space bar is effective to elevate the rear ends of the levers 80 and cause a corresponding elevation of the crank arms 30, thus effecting an actuation of the rod 33 which is effective to vibrate the lever 35, to elevate the ribbon vibrator and to move the rear end of the lever 37 as indi-- vibrator. Moreover, it will be seen that the escapement mechanism and the--means for releasing it through the ball 63 constltute a simple and efficient construction comprising but few parts.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a lever a ribbon vibrator carried directly by said lever, and feed dogs also carried directly by said lever.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key actuated lever of the first order, a ribbon vibrator carried by said lever at one end thereof, feed dogs carried by said lever at the other end thereof, and a rack cooperating with said feed dogs.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a key actuated lever, a ribbon vibrator carried by said lever, feed dogs formed integral with said lever, and a rack cooperating with said feed dogs.
- 4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the top plate of the machine, of a key actuated lever mounted directly beneath the top plate, a ribbon vibrator carried by said lever, feed dogs carried by said lever, and a rack cooperating with said feed dogs.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the top plate of the machine, of a key actuated lever pivoted directly beneath said top plate, a ribbon vibrator connected directly to said lever at one end thereof, feed dogs formed integral with said lever at the other end thereof, and an escapement wheel with which said feed dogs cooperate.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of an escapement wheel situated beneath the top plate of the machine, a vertically disposed shaft to which said escapement wheel is secured and which extends through said top plate and is supported in a bearing on said top plate, a feed pinion near thecarried by the carriage and cooperating directly with said movable clutch to release the carriage, and a substantially-horizontally disposed lever situated beneath the top plate and carrying at one end thereof feed dogswhich cooperate with said escapement wheel.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of an escapement wheel situated beneath the' top plate of the machine, a vertically disposed shaft to which said escapement wheel is secured and which extends through said top plate and is supported in a bearing thereon, a feed pinion near the upper end of said shaft, said pinion having a clutch member thereon a second clutch member fixed to turn wlth said shaft but free to move longitudinally thereof to effect an engagement and disengagement between said clutch members, a bail pivoted to the carriage and cooperating with said movable clutch and adapted to release the carriage, and one or more finger pieces connected di rectly to or formed integral with said bail for actuating it.
