To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LEVERING MAT- THEWS, citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surf Compressor Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in connection with air compressors, and.
has for its object the provision of improved means for operatin an air compressor by the force of the surf and keeping in motion the air compressor for the purpose of obtaining any pressure of compressed air for other motor appliances.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description, which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the apparatus, Fig. 2 is a View of a supporting block, carrying loose pulleys which act as guides for the driving rod, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus showing the position for operation.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the driving rod, made of any length required to carry the plate 2 to a sufficient depth of water from the shore, to keep it in continuous contact with the surf.
3 represents loose pulleys which hold the rod in position and are placed in the bracket 4: which is made fast in block 5 of cement or other material having the foundation made rigid in the earth and forming a support for the rod 1, which is connected to the sleeve 13, by a threaded joint 12, which provides a connection with ball 11, to the end of the piston rod or which operates piston of the air compressor in cylinder 6.
7 is a cross head guide carrying cross head 14, which steadies the piston rod.
8 is a suction and discharge valve, having a discharge pipe 9 and a suction pipe 10.
In addition to providing means for driving an air compressor by motion of the surf, I desire to provide means for setting in motion and operating other machinery of like character with the same method of construcionas indicated in the drawings of the driving plate and rod with bracket appliance as described.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efiicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects and advantages of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purpose for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purviews such changes as may be made within the scope of the appending claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a surf compressor apparatus, the combination with a plate, adapted to a reciprocating movement from the power of the surf, of a compressor cylinder having suitable suction and discharge valves, a piston within the cylinder, a connecting rod between the plate and the piston, and supporting blocks carrying guiding pulleys that engage with the connecting rod, substantially as set forth.
