In the preferred form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

The tank or cylinder isprovided with a charging opening B preferably located at or near the center of the upper surface thereof, and a door B is provided preferably at the forward end of such tank for the removal of the material.
From the above description, thus far, it will readily be seen that a suitable material, such as sludge, or fruit, vegetable or other appropriate matter may be introduced into the tank, the latter closed and the drying operation begun by firing the furnace. A. fuel comprised of the residuum of previous drying operations in compressed form may be employed for the purpose. The furnace being fired, the gases of combustion will circulate through the respective flues as hereinbefore indicated, thus subjecting a large proportion of the surface of the tank to the heat thereof, and producinga drying effect upon the material contained therein. This drying of the material is rendered most thorough and complete by the action of the agitating arms D in spreadin and separating the material as hereinbefore described. During such drying operation, vapors containing the elements of ammonia liquors and alcohol will be driven ofi. For the purpose of collecting, condensing and separating these vapors, I provide a pipe E communicating with the interior of the tank through its tap and preferably close to the rear end thereof. Said pipe E leads to and is connected with a condensing chamber F which is provided at its lower end with a pipe 7 communicating with a reservoir Gr. A pipe f connects the top of the chamber F with a condensing coil H which in turn may deliver to any suitable receptacle, not shown. The ammonia liquors Wlll readily condense in the chamber F and pass to and be stored within the reservoir Gr while the remaining vapors will flow to the coil H where they branch, a
tank, and collecting,
will be converted into alcohol and thereafter disposed of as may be desired.
Obviously, drying and condensing apparatus, such as that hereinabove described, is comparatively inexpensive to erect, operate and maintain, and its employment permits the material to be completely treated and utilized in the most economical manner.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Inapparatus of the character described, the combination with a frame embodying a furnace, a. tank supported by said frame, said tank and frame work cooperating to present a lower rearwardly extending flue bathing the lower half of the tank and two upper return flues one on each side of the tank above the longitudinal center line thereof, said return fines being indeendent of each other for a major part of their length but terminating in a common discharge communicating with said branch, agitating means within the condensing and separating means communicating with the upper portion of said tank, as and for the purpose set forth. v
2. In apparatus of the character described,
the combination with a frame embodying a furnace, a tank supported by said frame, said tank and frame work cooperating to present a lower rearwardly extending flue bathing the lower half of the tank and two upper return flues one on each side of the tank above the longitudinal center line thereof, said return fiues being independent of each other for a major part of their length but terminating in a common branch. a discharge communicating with said branch, a revoluble shaft within said tank, arms triangular in cross-section secured to said shaft, andcollecting, condensing and separating means communicating with the upper portion of said tank, as and for the purpose set forth.
