Letters Patent N 96,505, dated November 2, 1869; oatedated October 23, 1869.
Mon-
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT-STOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all/11:11am 'it may concern.:
Be it known that I, O. H. TAYLOR, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and Stat-e of New York, have invented a neiv and 4useful Improvement iii Bit- Stoeks; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full 'and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of iny invention consists in making the socket of a bit-stock with a projection ouy the side (when said socket is made solid or nou-adjustable as to size) opposite the screw, so that the said projection -will set under the shoulder of the shank, or that partofthe bit that enters the socket, when larranged within the saine, the object being to prevent the bit from slipping out, when the screw is set against the side opposite the aforesaid projection or ridge.
l alsoiuake au opening on the side vof the socket that has the projection on, so that vthe bit may be readily seen, for the purpose of adjusting to the proper entering-distance.
The object of my'invention is to produce a cheap bit-stock, that will hold a bit in asecui'e manner, with ont. adj-listing.
To enable others skilled in the art to make anduse my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1, in the accompanying drawing, is a side elevation of niy improvement, showing the socket, by dotted lilies, with a bit-shank inserted.
Figure 2 is a front view of the saine.
Figure 3 is a back view.
Letters of like naine and kind, refer to like parts'v in all the figures. f
I construct my bit-stock in any of the known forms, except that portion D D, (shownin all the tigures,) that holds the bit, the socket A of which I make larger than is usual, at its lower end, and forni a projection on one of its sides, at the lower poitioii, sliown at C, fig. l, said projection being lbrined for the purpose of setting under the shoulder ofthe bit-shank, (when said sliank is properly inserted in the soeket,) to prevent the saine from slippii'igout, when the screw, or its equivalent, is forced against its side, opposite the aforesahi projection. v
'.Lhe socket A is made wider the way the screw runs than the opposite or right-angle way, the dilieifence being that of the projection O, so that the bit-shank shoulder, or its largest pz t, may be inserted beyond thel projection, until the side ot the shank next .to it coines to a. fair bearing beyond it, there being an opening formed at G, so that the bit may be readily seen, for the purpose of adj ustineut, :is aforesaid.
The socket is made. sutiicientlylarge to receive any ordinary bit-shank shoulder beyond the projection U. By this` inode, they may he lirmly secured within the saine, by the aid of a thumb-screw, J, or its equiva-V klent', without any fitting. f
1 ain aware that hit-stock sockets, or pieces forming them, have been provided with similar projectioi'is,and for thesame purpose that I have made them, that of preventing the bit yfrom slipping out; but l ain not aware that asolid, iinadjiistable socket was ever provided with a projecting ridge, as herein described, and for t-h'e, purpose set! forth.
H :wing thus fully described uiy invention, v What I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Let ters Patent, is
The socket I) D, with opening G and lip C, when all the parts are constructed as described, and thi' the purposes specified.
' O. H. TAYLOR.
