s'rrs FLYING-MACHINE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IANs Soi-IoBoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flying-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a flying machine of the dirigible balloon type, the object of the invent-ion being to provide a machine for individual passenger use which may be propelled and steered by and through the efforts of the passenger, thus dispensing with the use of motorsV and complex steering gear and enablingl a simple and inexpensive construction of machine to be produced.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, showing a perspective view of a flying machine embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a main balloon of suflicient size and buoyancy for the purpose. Suspended from this balloon is a frame embodying upper and lower rings 2 and 3 and connecting rods or standards 4. The ring 3 is designed to encompass the upper portion of the body of the passenger and carries a U-shaped depending cross bar 5 adapted to be straddled by the passenger and provided with a saddle or seat G. A sling is also provided to support the passenger, the same comprising chains or the like 7 depending, from the ring 2 and carrying a band or strap 8 to encircle the body of the wearer beneath the arms.
Disposed below and iiexibly suspended from the frame bar 5 by a looped chain or cable 9 is a pair of small auxiliary balloons 10 which support the feet of the rider and are provided with straps 11 or other means for fastening the riders feet thereto. These small balloons, which may be termed steering balloons, are provided with controlling rods 12 having grips or handles 13.
In use, the machine is anchored in any suitable manner against ascent until the passenger or operator takes his position, when the machine is released for ascent. The operator carries a balancing bar 14: provided with end blades or paddles 15, by means of which he maintains the ship upright and steers the ship laterally. By working his legs alternately up and down or simulating Specification of Letters Patent.

a walking motion the small balloons 10 may be raised vand lowered to steady the machine, facilitate the ascent of the machine, oppose a resistance to too speedy descent, and assist to some extent in forward propulsion, which may also be promoted by manipulating the paddles or blades 15. The controlling or operating rods 12 may be employed for applying hand power to move the small balloons when a vigorous action is necessary. By proper manipulation of the controlling parts the machine may be guided to main- .tain a desired course under pressure of the air current-s and under certain conditions may be propelled in any direction.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A ilying machine comprising a buoyant body, a frame suspended therefrom and provided with means for support-ing an operator in an upright position, and reciprocatory controlling devices adapted to be connected with the feet of the operator and to be operated thereby, said devices embodying auxiliary buoyant bodies.
2. A flying machine comprising a main buoyant body, a frame pendent therefrom having means for supporting' an operator thereon, reciprocatory auxiliary buoyant bodies pendent from and flexibly connected with the frame, and means for connecting said auxiliary buoyant bodies with the legs of the operator.
3. A flying machine comprising a main buoyant body, a frame pendent therefrom having means for supporting an operator thereon, reciprocatory auxiliary buoyant bodies pendent from and flexibly connected vwith the frame, means for connecting said auxiliary buoyant bodies with the legs of the operator, and operating handles connected with said auxiliary buoyant bodies.
1. A flying machine comprising a main buoyant body, a frame pendent therefrom, said frame being provided with a sling and a supporting saddle, reciprocatory auxiliary buoyant bodies pendent from and flexibly connected with the frame, and means for connecting said auxiliary buoyant bodies with the legs of the operator.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
