To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. FORWARD, a citizen of United States, residing at West Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in High-Pressure Turbine-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rotary high pressure turbine pumps, and particularly to a method of packing the guide vanes which are placed in the throat surrounding the runner.
My invention consists in the parts and the construction and combination of parts which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a general view stage pump, showing theap lication of my invention. Fig. 2 is an on view showin the guide vanes and segments. Figs. 3 an 4 are sections showing the undercut grooves, and the paokin material therein. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 show 51c dove-tailed form of said grooves. Fi 8 shows a ring with beveled or chamfere locking section.
In a former application Serial Number 536,089, filed by me Jan. 3', 10, I have shown located between the side walls and covers of'the subj oined shells of the pump casing, and counterbores or grooves formed in said walls, with segments projecting from the vanes and fitting into said counterboresto secure the vanes in place.

In my invention I make the grooves or channels 4 in ,which the segments 2 project of a width greater than the width of the se ments, and also having a greater depth. These grooves or channels are preferably undercut Or beveled inwardly as shown in the drawings, and they are filled 'with a packing 'of metal sufiiciently fusible which is cast in around the segments, thus forming an extremely tight joint at this point.-

In Fig. 8 I have shown a segment 2 having a beveled,.inclined or chamfered section 2 1nto which the packing metal will flow, and by thus overlapping the ring at these points, the segments will be prevented from slipping, or being pulledout of place.
I do not broadly claim in this application the guide vanes with segments projecting from the vanes and fitting into counterbores formed in the walls of the casing, as the same forms the sub'ect matter of my former application, Ser. llo. 536,089, herein referred to.
Havin thus described my invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In combinatiom with the guide vanes of a turbine pump, and annular retaining segments formedthereon, of walls or covers having corresponding grooves-adapted to receive the segments, and a lining of fusible metal cast therein.
2. In combination with a turbine pump, the ide vanes forming fluid passages therein and having outwardly rojectlng segments, of shells and covers havmg corresponding annular rooves into WhlCh the grooves bein undercut or bevele and a fi ing of fusib e sacking metal cast into the grooves aroun the segments.
