Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. CUMMINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lockstitch Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l of the drawings is a View showing in front elevation portion of a sewing machine having an embodiment of the invention applied thereto, a part of the fixed casing of the machine being represented in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a view of the same'parts looking'from the left hand side in Fig. 1,- showing a part of the said casing in vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is' a' View in plan of portion of the saine, with the work support omitted.
Having reference to the drawings,-a part of the base of the fixedcasing of the sewing machine is shown at 1, and at 2 is shown a post or standard which is secured upon thesaid base and extending upward therefrom. 3 is a work-rest or work-support upon the upper end of the said post or standard 2. 4 is an ordinary hooked needle, and 4-1 the needle-bar carrying the same. The said needlebar is held in guides 42, 42, and actuated through suitable connections, which latter herein are constituted by the link 43, the crank-pin 44, the disk 45 carrying the said crank-pin, and the shaft 46 on which the said disk is mounted. At- 5 is shown a rotary loop-taker, herein a shuttle, containin a bobbin as usual. At 7 is the shuttle-driver by means of which the said shuttle is rotated. The said shuttle-driver is fixed upon the upper end of the upright shaft 71, which latter is driven by means of the bevel pinion 7 2 upon its lower end meshing with the bevel gear 73 fast upon the horizontal rotating shaft 46. As thus far referred to, the various parts are or may be as heretofore or as preferred, save as I will hereinafter indicate in treating of the features in which my invention more especially resides.
In conformity with one portion of my invention, I provide a finger, which is movabl mounted adjacent to the path of the needle and that of the nose of the loop-taker or shuttle, and is provided with actuating connections whereby, as the needle draws a loop of needle-thread through the 'work, the said finger is caused to move synchronously with the needle but at a different rate of speed and to operate, while the drawing movement of the needle continues, to take the loop out from under the hook of the needle by a movement in the same direction with that of the needle but faster than the latter, thereby disengaging the 100 from the moving needle. The finger hol s the loop while the needle completes its movement away from the work, and also serves as a restrainer by means of which one side of the loop is held against the tendency of the rotatmg loop-taker or shuttle to carry the loop around with it in its rotation. The said finger, in other words, operates to disengage the loop from the needle while the latter is continuing its withdrawing movement, and also as a loop-restrainer to prevent one sideof the loop from being carried around within the shuttle-race by the shuttle in its rotation. Herein, the finger in question is shown at 8.
The means of supporting and actuating the finger may vary in practice. Herein, it is mounted upon a rod 9 that is mounted to turn in a bearing or bearings with which the post or standard 2 is provided. For the purpose of communicating-movement to the rod and finger, the said rod 9 is shown provided, at the end thereof opposite that to which the finger is applied, with a crankarm 91, which latter is connected by means of a rod 92 with an arm or lever 93, the said arm or lever being mounted pivotally upon a screw 94 which is applied to the base 1, and being provided with a roll 95 against which acts a cam 96 which is fast u on the rotating shaft 46. By means of t c said cam and arm or lever, and the connections from the last mentioned part to the rod 9 upon which the finger 8 is mounted, the said finger is oscillated in a vertical plane. The cam is shaped and proportioned to cause the finger to operate as aforesaid. The free end of the finger is pointed, so as to facilitate the entrance of the said end between the opposite sides of the loop which is being drawn down by the needle. The finger is slotted as at 81 to receive the upper end of the needle as the finger swings downward. The pointed end of the finger enters the loop above the end of the needle, and the downward swing of the finger is so speeded as to cane the operative end or the same to g ainiipon-- the needle as the latter descends. he finger in being depressed acts by reason of the said gain to disengage the loop from Which. it has disengaged from the needle,

As will be apparent from the drawings and foregoing description, the needle and loop-taker or shuttle are both located at the same side of 'the material which is to be stitched, and, also, the loop-taker onshuttle rotates ip a plane at right angles to the plane containing the path' of movement of the --needle. The body of the shuttle, and they shuttle-race, are located at' a slight distance laterally from the line of movement ofthe needle and needle-bar. In order that the loop of thread which is drawn by the needle may become properly engaged by the shuttle Without requiring the aid of a moving device to engage the side of the needle-loop and carry it over to the loop-taker orshuttie, the latter is provided with a tip or looptaking point 52 which projects radially beyond other portions of the shuttle body and or" the shuttle-race, so as to nearly or substantially intersect the path of movement of the needle. The said tip or point constitutes, in effect, a projecting picking device, forming part of the loop-taker or shuttle,

I claim as my invention 1. In a sewing machine, in combination, a hooked needle operating to draw a 100 of needle-thread through the material whic is to be stitched, a loop-taker, a finger, and operating means for the said finger acting to cause it to disengage the said loop from the moving needle by movement communicated to the said 100 .in the same general direction ith that oi the needle but faster than the lattenand to hold one side of the loop against the tendency of. the loop-taker to carry the loop therewith.
