To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT LENTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

Certain objects of the invention are to facilitate the attachment as well as the removal of the shoe; and to securely hold the shoe in place upon the hoof.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in side elevation of my improved detachable horseshoe. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, represents the body of the shoe, which may be of any usual form.

A rigid toe-clip, 2, extends upward and inward from the toe of the shoe; and near its heel the shoe has attached thereto on opposite sides a pair of hinged heel-clips, 3, hinged at, t, along the outer side of the body of the shoe, and extending upward and inward to overhang the hoof, when the shoe is applied thereto.

The upper rear corners of the hinged clips, 3, are inwardly offset as shown at, 5, whereby they are adapted to occupy a position in the rear of the, hoof to prevent the shoe from slipping forward in use.

Each of the hinged clips, 3, is formed with a rearwardly projecting ear, 6, which is adapted to overhang the rear end of the shoe, said ear being provided with an aperture adapted to receive a screw-bolt, 7, which is inserted therethrough into a similarly threaded aperture, 8, in the body of the shoe.

By means of the screw-bolt, 7, the ear, 6, can be drawn down toward the body of the shoe, thereby forcing the hinged clips inward against the hoof, and securing them in said position.

I have shown the screw-bolt, 7, provided with a lock-nut, 9, applied to the bolt between the ear, 6, and the body of the shoe, which lock-nut can be tightened or loosened by means of a flat wrench.

As a means for further supporting the hinged clips, 3, I have shown their forward ends connected by cross-rods, 12, with the diagonally oppositecorners or ends of the toe-clip 2.

The cross-rods, 12, are preferably arched sufliciently to avoid injurious pressure upon the hoof, their function being primarily to draw inward the forward ends of the hinged clips, 3, said rods being flattened where they cross at 13. Nuts, 17 on said rods, 12, serve as a means for drawing the forward ends of the hinged clips, 3, as tightly against the hoof as desired.

' I have shown a shoe provided at its forward end with a transverse dove-tailed slideway, 18, adapted to receive a toe-calk, 19, which is secured in position in its slideway by means of screws, 20, inserted through apertures in the body of the shoe near the toe. To perunit securing the calk in this manner, I have provided the toe-clip with apertures, 21, through which a screw-driver can be insorted to engage said screws.

The toe-clip being rigid, and the heelclips securely held by the screw-bolts, 7, all movement of the shoe upon the hoof is effectually prevented; while, by means of the cross-rods, 12, a more uniform pressure of the hinged clips, 3, is secured.

hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a detachable horseshoe, the combination with a shoe-body having a toe-clip eX- tending upward and inward; of a pair of heel-clips hinged to the sides of the shoebody near the heels thereof, each of said hinged clips having an apertured ear eX tending inward and rearward therefrom; and a screw-bolt inserted through each of said apertured ears into the body of the shoe.

2. In a detachable horseshoe, the combination with a shoe-body having a toe-clip extending upward and inward; of a pair of heel-clips hinged to the sides of the shoe body near the heels thereof, each of said hinged clips having its upper rear corner inwardly offset to occupy a position in rear of the hoof to which the shoe is applied, and i also having an apertured ear extending 1nward and rearward therefrom; and a screwbolt inserted through each of said apertured 5 ears into the body of the shoe.

3. In a detachable horseshoe, the combination with a shoe-body having a toe-clip extending upward and inward; of a pair of heel-clips hinged to the sides of the shoe- ]0 body near the heels thereof, each of said hinged clips having an apertured ear extending inward and rearward therefrom; a screw-bolt inserted through each of said apertured ears into the body of the shoe; a pair of screw-threaded cross-rods conneet- 15 ing the upper front corners of the hinged heel-clips, respectively, with the diagonally opposite corners of said toe-clip; and nuts fitting said cr0ss-r0ds, respectively.
