- posts and poles, and more particularly to light posts and poles for various purposes.
The invention relates to that class of metal post or pole provided with a concrete base to be buried in the ground which not only imparts stability to the postor pole ut also prevents the same from rusting or corroding.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction to facilitate the molding of the concrete around the base of the pole and which also protects the concrete during handling and shipping.
The invention comprises thearrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a side view of a post or pole embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the base on an enlarged scale; and ig. 3 is a horizontal section taken just above the bottom portion of the base.
The post or pole proper, that is, the shaft, is shown at 1. This may be of any suitable construction, shape or size, being shown as a metal tube. Around the lower end of this tube is molded a concrete base 2 of suilicient length and size to form a suitable anchorage for the post in the ground. The mass of concrete is surrounded by a metal casing 8 which may be of any suitable shape in cross section, preferably circular, as shown, and with the edges of the sheet suitably united, such as by riveting, shown at l, although an ordinary crimped or seamed joint such as used in stove pipe construction may be used. The casing has secured therein a wooden bottom 5 of circular form which is held in position by means of nails or similar members 6 driven through the easing into the edges of the board. This wooden bottom has formed centrally therein in its upper surface a socket 7 in which the lower end of the shaft 1 is set, said socket extending only part way tl'irough the bottom. The casing 3 may be of any suitable material,
The concrete base is of such size pole comprising a metal pole comprising mold or casing surroundlng the shaft, a bottom for formed and the bottom 5 is secured therein. The shaft 3 then has its lower end inserted in the socket 7 in the bottom, after which the concrete 2 is filled into the casing around the shaft and rmly rammed in place. WVhen the concrete sets it binds firmly together the shaft and casing. The casing 3 serves as the mold for shaping the concrete base and at the same time forms a pro tecting casing around the concrete so that the latter cannot accidentally crack, chip or break in handling or while being shipped.
In use the pole is sunk into the ground practically to the top of the concrete base. and length as to give the necessar stable anchorage in the ground and also prevents rusting of the metal post. casing 3 is preferably coated outside with asphaltum or similar coating material to enhance its appearance, and which also to some extent prevents the same from rusting when in the g'ound, although the latter is not necessary as no harm is done even if said casing rusts entirely away after the post or pole is put into the ground.
y use of the casing the formation of the base is expedited and bases of uniform shape and size produced. At the same time the pole or post can be quite severely handled in shipping or the like withoutdanger of inurmg the concrete base.
TV hat I claim is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a post or shaft, a sheet metal mold and protecting casing surrounding the end of the shaft and provided with a bottom and shaft.
2. As an article of manufacture, a post or a metal shaft, a sheet metal end of said said mold or casing provided with a socket for the end of the shaft, and concrete filling the space between the mold or casing and shaft.
3. As an article of pole comprising a metal shaft, a metal mold or casing surrounding the end of the shaft, a wooden bottom secured in sa1d casing and provided with a socket for the end of the l pole comprising a metal shaft, a sheet metal shaft and cementitious material between the mold or casing and the shaft.
4. As an article of manufacture, a post or 5 pole comprising a metal shaft, a thin light strong mold or protecting casing surrounding the end of the shaft, a bottom secured in said mold or casing provided with a socket for the end of the shaft, and concrete fill- 10 ing the space between the mold or casing an the shaft.
5. As an article of manufacture, a post or mold or casing surrounding the end of the shaft, a bottom secured in said casing and 15 provided with a socket for the end of the shaft, and cementitious material filling the casing around said shaft.
