Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SANFORD, a resident of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVindow-Lighters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to shades for window lighters, the object being to provide an oblong window lighter suitable for use in con nection with the lighting of show windows, show cases and the like, and its principal object being to provide a glass shade of this character suitable for lighting continuously in such show case or window of any desired length.

It relates to a companion application filed by me of even date herewith, Serial No. 522,848 in which, I have illustrated an oblong window lighter including a glass shade provided with two or more necks for attach ment to a suitable holder, said oblong shade being either made integral or of sections.

The invention herein claimed comprises principally an oblong window lighter having a shade formed of sections preferably of glass, each section being provided with means for attachment to a suitable support or holder comprising neck portions each attached to the support. It also comprises an improved construction of bracket support of an adjustable nature adapted to throw the light in any desired direction.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows the window lighter embodying the invention when supported from above; Fig. 2 shows the end section thereof in its preferred form; Fig. 3 shows an intermediate section and Fig. 4 shows a bracket support in connection with the holder, the same being illustrated in connection with an integral oblong window lighter; Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a window lighter embodying my in vention; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bracket.

The shade or window lighter as above stated is formed in sections, having the end sections 1 and the intermediate sections 2. These sections are formed of glass and pressed to the desired shape of body, being shown with the curved top wall 3 and the outwardly flaring sides 4. Their outer faces may have any suitable ornamentation, being shown with longitudinal prisms extending up and down on the sides and end portions to properly reflect the light. The end sections 1 have the side walls 4 and the end wall 6 which may be of any suitable shape, being illustrated as curved or rounded corresponding to the side walls of the shade. The end sections are also preferably formed with the flat interior transverse walls or partitions 7 the same being employed to give greater strength to the body of the glass shade or reflector and support the sides thereof. Each section is also provided with suitable means for attachment to the support 9, the preferred means being the neck 8 pressed with the glass body. Each intermediate section is formed with the top wall 12, side walls 13 and with means for attaching to the holder 10, such as the neck portion 14. The end walls 15 of each intermediate por tion are formed flat, corresponding in shape to the interior walls 7 of the end sections 1, so that a shade or window lighter of any desired length may be formed by the employment of any desired number of such intermediate sections each preferably fitted flush with the transverse wall of the adjoining section.

Any suitable means for supporting the several sections forming the window lighter may be employed, the preferred means comprising the support 10 which has the required number of neck holders l1 engaging with the necks of the several sections forming the window lighter as by means of the screws 17. Any suitable means for supporting the electric bulbs or the light within the sectional window lighter may be employed, for example, the bulb holders 18 shown in the form of rings provided with screws 19 by which the bulbs may be clamped in place.

The support for the sectional window lighter may be held in position in any desired way. In Fig. 1 I have shown the same as hung from chains 20, as fully described in said application Serial No. 522,848. In Fig. 4 I have illustrated the shade as supported on brackets, the same forming the specific invention embodied in the present application, the brackets 21 being secured at any particularpoint in the show case or window framing and providing means for support below the window lighter, such as where it is desired to reflect the light upwardly or at an upward incline. The brackets have the bodies 22 and the hinged arms 23 to which the support 24 is connected by means of bolts 27 passing through bolt holes 27 in the arms 23, said arms having a series of bolt holes as illustrated, for the adjustment of the support in any desired position. I have illustrated in said Fig. 4 an integral oblong refiector showing that brackets may be employed with that form as well as with the sectional window lighter as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, though of course such brackets may be employed with the sectional lighters if desired, which are illustrated by the dotted lines, indicating that the lighter shown in Fig. 1 may be formed of two or more sections such as the two end sections 1.

By my invention I am enabled to provide glass window lighters, shades or reflectors of any desired length so as to provide for the continuous lighting of the show case or window, it only being necessary to employ any suitable number of such sections according to the length of the show case or window. I am also enabled to properly distribute the light within the show case or window, to properly support the several sections form ing the window lighter, and to support the electric bulbs or like lighting means in proper position within the window lighters.

By means of the brackets as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 I am also enabled to support the window lighters from below and to sustain the same at any desired angle to reflect the light either upwardly or at any desired incline.

What I claim is:

1. A window lighter consisting of a plurality of sections each provided with interior transverse walls and means for supporting said sections.

2. A window lighter comprising an oblong shade consisting of a plurality of sections having flat interior walls and means for supporting said shade and holding said interior walls flush with each other.

3. A window lighter comprising an oblong shade consisting of a plurality of sections each provided with interior transverse walls and means for holding said sections in contact with each other and supporting said shades.

at. A window lighter comprising a shade consisting of a plurality of glass sections, the end sections having continuous curved end walls and flat interior walls, and each interior section having fiat interior end walls, and means for supporting each of said sections.

5. A window lighter comprising a shade consisting of sections provided with flat interior walls and means for supporting each of said sections and holding said interior walls in contact with each other.

6. A window lighter comprising a shade consisting of a plurality of sections each provided with a neck portion in combination with a support having neck holders engaging said neck port-ions.

7. A window lighter comprising a shade consisting of a plurality of sections each section being provided with means for carrying an incandescent bulb and a support provided with means for carrying each section.

8. A window lighter comprising a shade, a support attached thereto and a bracket provided with an arm, and means for adjusting said support on said arm to thereby adjust the position of the shade.

9. A window lighter comprising a shade, a support attached thereto, and brackets each provided with hinged arms and having a plurality of holders, and a bolt adapted to attach said support in the required adjusted position to said hinged arm through said holders.

10. A window lighter comprising a shade consisting of a plurality of sections, a sup port provided with means for attachment to each of said sections to thereby hold the same together and brackets adjustably attached to said support.

11. A window lighter comprising an oblong shade consisting of a plurality of sections each section having a neck portion, a support provided with holders, and means for attaching the same to said neck portions and thereby supporting the shade in combined position, and a bracket adjustably attaohed to said support.

12. A window lighter comprising a glass shade consisting of a plurality of sections having curved top walls and interior transverse walls, and each having a neck portion, a support therefor extending along said curved top wall and provided with holders adapted to grip said curved neck portions and hold said transverse walls flush with each other, a bracket, and adjustable means for attaching said support thereto.
