CAR-WINDOW GUARD.
Specification a! Letters Patent.
Application filed October ll. 1900.
Patented July 5. 1910. lei-lat Ito. 522.05.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, FRANK T. Panusn, citizen of the United States. residing aiColunihia. in the county of ltichlaud and .tate of South tarolina, have invented certain 'new and useful lm u-ovem ents in tar-\\'indow tluards, of which the following is a s wciticatiou.
This invention relates to window guards and refers mrticularl to an attaclnnent to he applied to the wiudowsof railway coaches to prevent the. entrance of cinders, dust, and the like.
An object-of this invention is to provide a guard of this nature which is wrmaueutly attached upon the coach within the window and outwardly of the sash of the. same, and which is adapted to he adjusted in accordance with the direction in which the coach is drawn.
The invention has for another ohject the provision of a guard which is so secured upon the window casing, that the sashes may he raised or lowered without the necessit y of moving the guard or of adjusting the same.
The invention further aims at the production of a guard of this character which coinprises but few parts and one which may be easily and Huiekly adjusted to the proper position, an is one which may he economically produced so as to form a device which is of practical advantage in the art.
Fora full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:-
F igure 1 is a perspective view of the outer side of,a coach window disclosin the attachment of the improved guard thcret't i. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the wall of the coach and window easin disclosing the guard as applied thereto. Ti 3 is a horizontal section through the win ow easing disclosing the guard as attached thereto, and Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of one, of the strips em loyed.
Corresponding and li e parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a window easing which is positioned within the wall of a. coach and which is provided with guide rails 11 and a. sash 12.
Secured against the inner opposite sides of the casing 10 are. strips 11* which are formed of metal and are. provide-l with apertures 14 for the reception of screws 15. or the like, to enable the securing of the strips 13 to the casing 10. From the outer faces of the strips 13 headed studs in are extended which are di posed in spaced longitudinal alinenient. the same liciug preferably three in ntunher and being so positioned as to register with one another when the stri )S 13 are positioned u )on the casing 20. The strips 13 are ])l'0\'l( ed with a rod 17 which is engaged at its op msite ends through the upper extremities o the st ri is 1 3 and supports a suitable guard 1 'l he guard 1h is formed of a flattened strip of material which is reduced in length at its inner edge and tiared outwardly. the ll|)|)t'l't'|t|l@=i theguard 18 being provided with a longitudinal slot 19 for loose engagement with the rod IT. The guard 18 is further provided with a pluralitv of longitudinal slots 2H which are tlislmsetl in spaced longitudinal alinemeut therein and adjacent the inner edge of the guard 18. The slots 20 are disposed in such relation as to register with the. studs 16 carried by the strips 13. The lower ends of the slots 20 are enlarged as at 21 to receive the heads of the studs 16 when the guard 18 is forced a inst the same.
From 4 it will he noted that the strips 13 are each beveled as at 22 at their opposite ends in order to admit of the close fitting of the same against. the sill '23 of the window, and in order to admit of the interchanging of the strips 13 which nmterially aids in the positioning of the guard upon the window. The guard 18 is cut away at its lower end .is at 24 to raise the lower cdge'of the guard above the sill 23 to insure the seating of the studs within the upper ends of the slots 20 after the same is passed through the enlau'ed portions '21.
l ii operating the device after the same has been up )lied to the wiudow,-the 'uard 18 is rai upwardly upon the X 17 and forced against; one side of the window casing 10, bringtn the enlarged slots 21 into re istration wi the heads of the studs 16, w 1011 the guard 18 is further forced inwardly over the studs and then rmitted to drop. This action engages the leads of the Slllt s 16 through the 'uard 18 and within the upper ends of lit! slots 20, whereby the wind pressure upon the guard 18 cannot displace the guar 18 or swing the same Ill- \vardly toward the sash 12. The longitudinal slot t9 formed in the guard 18 iertnits of the free movement of the guard when adjusting the same, or removing the guard from the stud 16. When it is desired to position the guard at the opposite side of the window, the guard 18 is raised and is moved laterally across the window upon the. rod 17 here the guard is engaged with the opposite studs 16 earried lay the opposite st rip 13.
The advantages derived from a device of this nature are apparent, sinee the passenger-s in the coaches are elnthled to ride therein without the diseomfort of reeeiviug the einders whieh are thrown from the engine and 'llitll ueentuulute within the eoaehes from the windows. device of this nature is al-o in c-pei'ative position at all times so that the upholstering in the eoaehes is prot n :1 from the aetion of aeeuumlatiug eind r and du t hen the pas engers are not oeeup ving the seats adjaeent the windows and when the windows are left open for the pur IUM. of admitting a draft. of fresh air to t tt' vouch.
't'he openings l-t 'ltit'll are formed in opposite ends of the st rips 13 are for reeeptiou of the opposite extremities of rod .1? in a 'eot'tlutn'e with the side of easing to \thieh the This provision t l' lht llt' ends of the stt'i is ,ehangiug ot' the st rips and also permits ot' the eenring of any at the trip upon any a side to whieh the same is to lie applied.
Having thus deser'ihed the invention what I is elaimed as new is:-
l. in eomhination with a window easing having sashes theta-in, o strips engaged the the the l the .-trips l-l art seeitred. uln'tiilig ill the oppol-l enalde: the-it|tel'- the reeeption of said against the opposite 'rntiel' sides of said (:us- 5 ing ontw r ll of the sashes, h aded s'luds mounted upo' said strips and extended he 5 waidly therefrom. a guard positioned in the easing and having slots formed adjueent the inner edge thereof in regist ration with said i tuds and having a longitudinal slot; formed t at its inner upper eorner. and a rod engaged t aeross the upper ends of said strips for engagement. through the longitudinal slot in said guard to retain the same within the window.
2. I n muuhination, a window easing, strips seeured against the opposite inner fares of said easing, headed studs carried by said strips. a rod seeured aeross said strips. a guard having a longitudinal slot ther-in for the reee it ion of said rod, said guard having a plura ity of slots with enlarged ends for studs to retain said guard in adjusted position.
it. window guard ineluding a ntir ol' strips for engagement against the sides of a window easing. a rod seem-ed aeross said strip a guard loosely and slidahly engaged on said rod and having a pluralitv of slots -therein. and headed studs earriei by said trt is for engagement through the slots in said guard to retain the same in position.
i. window guard ineluding a pair of oppositely disposed strips, headed studs inwardly extended from said strips in spared relation. a guard having slots t'ormed therethrough for the reeeption of said studs. and a rod earried hy said strips and lzL'fztgt' l loosely through said guard for retaining the. .--ame lo po-ition.
windoa guard inrluding a pair of upptisili'lj' tli 'lmst-tl strips. ln'mle l tuds ar- -ranged in spared longitudinal l't'lntintt upon said strips. a rod eeured aeross ttltl strips. and a guard ltM).-t'l mounted on said rod. mid guard having a )lltttllll of elongated slots-formed in spaeet longitudinal relatior atljarent the inner edge thereof. the sl'tiS being etilarged at the lower ends and registered .with said studs for holding said guard in position.
