Be it known that i, Hanauer O. Carreau', citizen of the United States, residing at Sanford, in the county of Orange and State of tv Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toot-hed Spikes, of which the following is a specication.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in spikes designed particularly for use in securing railway rails .fte ties, and the invention has for its ri mary object, a sim le, durable and eiiicient vnyconstruction of rai way spike, the parts of which are so arranged that the s ike maybe e'ectually l prevented hom becoming loosened acciden- A tally, while at the same time permitting it to be retracted whenever desired With this and other objects iii view as will fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists essentially in a spike embodying a body portion with a ri penetrating toe or point and head, and a ocking member pivotally connected to the spike and so arranged 'l' ber will be engaged with the base ange of j ythe rail and thereby impart a tilting move- 3 mentY to the locking member so as to force I the toothed portion thereof outwardly into rm engagement with the tie, the teeth of such portion of the locking member being tuallv upwardly beveled as shown so as to eii'ec prevent the retraction of the spike p without first tilting the locking` member to a sition where its toothed edge or edges lie flush with the side edges of the body portion of the spike. The body portion l of the spike is formed with the usual head 2 and with a penetrating toe or point 3. The main body portion 1 of the spike is recessed in its side edges as indicated at 1i, roin a oint near the toe 3 65 to a oint near the hea 2, for the rece tion of si e bars 5 of al O' member, sai side bars embracing the bo y portion of the spike and being pivotally connected thereto intermediate ot their ends by a rivet 6 or 70 similar fastening device. The side bars 5 of the lo 0' member are of a width equal to or less than the width of the body ortion 1 so that the sideedges of said si e bars will not project beyond the margin of the body portion when the locking member is arranged with its side bars in longitudinal alinement with the body portion of the spike. The locking member includes addition to the side bars 5, a part or portion which is preferably formed integral therewith and which in the invention now being described is in the form of abail or loop 9 which is designed to artially encircle the head 2 of 100 the spike w `ch is normally oiiset therefrom as clearly illustrated in the drawing. When the side bars 5 lie flush with the side edges or margins of the body portion 1, the bail or loop 9, which is angularly disposed to the side bars 5 preferably lies in a plane ust slightly below the plane of the hea 2 whereupon when the spike is driven nearly home, the bail will engage the adgacent base flange of the rail and will consequently rock the lockina member in a osition to project the toothed edges thereo the teeth ,A

The opposite edges of the bar 5* are toothed or notched as indicated at 7 vand 8* respectively and the upper end `of the bar 5 is formed with a proiecting portion in the form of a tongue 9* designed to exltend underneath the head 2*, and thereby ada ted to rock the locking member.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A spike, comprising a body portion, a locking member pivotally connected thereto and formed with a tooth, and means carried by said locking member adapted to engage a base iiaiige o? member may be rocked to an inclined position relative to the body portion.
2. A spike comprising a body portion and a locking member ivotaliy connected thereto intermediate o its ends, said locking member being toothed on its edges and embodying means at its upper end designed to engage the base flange .o a rail for the pur` pose specified.
