ANCHORING FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.. Patented July 5, acre.
Application filed March 9, 1909. Serial No. 482,353. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F AINNIE E. SAUNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Comanche, Oklahoma, in the county of Stephens, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchoring Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as.
. post having a pointed lower end, and with ment of the invention.
swinging barbed'or anchor devices adapted to be automatically protruded into the groundwhen the post is inserted.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawingsillustrative of the preferred emb0di- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved post. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
- The improved device comprises a hollow or tubular fence post represented as a whole at 10, and preferably increasing in diameter from the upper toward the lower end, and with a threaded aperture 11 in the upper end and witlithe lower end pointed as at 12, to facilitate the insertion of the post into the ground. The tapered or pointed portion 12 is preferably solldas shown, to increase the strength and wei ht and correspondingly increase the stability of the post when inserted into the ground, indicated at 13.
Formed in opposite sides of the body of the post next to the solid pointed portion 12 are recesses 13-14, and extending through- Fig. 3' is a upon the rod 15 Within the recesses 13-44 are two anchor or barb devices 1819, the barb devices adapted to be disposed with their inner sides against the body of the post Within the recesses when in one position, and to be projected laterallyfrom the posts when in another position, the projected position of the anchor devices being shown in Fig. 3. Thus when the post is driven into the ground, the anchor devices are caused .to' assume their upper or withdrawn position, and then when the earth is tampe'd around the posts the anchor devices are caused to assume their outward position, and thus serve as effectual anchors to prevent the removal of the post under normal conditions. Thusa very rigid and stable post is provided, which will effectually resist lateral pressures from any cause and will.like- -wise resist the lateral strains imparted by the strand wires.
The anchor devices 18-19 are preferably formed with their outer faces concaved as shown, to increase the resistance against the removal of the posts. 7
The posts employed at the corners or at angles in the line of the fencing are provided with recesses 20 to receive brace members 21, the lower ends of the brace members adapted to be inserted into'the soil While the upper ends are secured by bolts or other fastening devices 22, as shown. By this means the posts at the corners or at angles to the line of fencing will be firmly supported against the lateral strand wires, as will be obvious.
The threaded apertures 11 are designed to receive threaded studs 23 depending from a cap device 24, the latter being preferably of ornamental form, as shown.
The posts may be of any required size or of any required strength, and will prefer-' ably be ofcast metal and may be galvanized or otherwise protected to prevent corrosion.
What is claimed, is
A fence post having longitudinally extendin recesses in its opposite sides near one en a rodextending through the posts between the recesses the terminals of said rod being down-turned and bearing against the portion of the post which is located at In testimony whereof,I sfix my signature, tOhe bottomof the recess, agiid anichoringfimemin presence of two witnesses.
