Be it known that I, DAVID J. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Attachments for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to automobiles and more particularly to sounding apparatus for use in connection therewith and has for its object to provide an automobile including apparatus incorporated in its structure which will be arranged for operation to produce harmonious chords or upon which inusical compositions may be played.

Another object is to provide a structure such that the incorporation of the above mentioned apparatus will not inconvenience the occupants of the automobile.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present invention incorporated in an auto mobile, Fig. 2 is a top plan, Fig. 3 is a detail showing the cover of the keyboard closed with the seat cushion thereupon, Fig. 4: is a vertical section of the front seat and the musical apparatus taken on the line 1-4: of Fig. 2, the keyboard being closed, Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the keyboard, the front board being removed to show the arrangement of horns, Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the invention incorporated in the rear seat of an automobile the cover being closed, Fig. 7 is a vertical section on the line 77 of Fig. 6, showing the arrangement of the roll cover and the cords for bringing the cover into closed position. Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic view showing the connection of the horns at the rear portion of the machine with the keyboard.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown an automobile 5 including a rear seat 6 and a front seat 10 the latter having a back 11. The supports for the front seat 10 include side members 12 which extend rear- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly beyond the back 11 and which have mounted therebetween a horizontal keyboard 13 located within the reach of occupants of the rear seat 6. The keyboard 13 terminates short of the back 11 as shown, and a vertical back 14: is located in parallel relation to the back 11 and at the edge of the keyboard. An air tank 15 is located beneath the keyboard 13, and disposed between the backs 11 and 1 1 there are a plurality of vertically extending horns 16 which are connected with the tank 15, the keys of the keyboard 13 being arranged to control the admission of air to the horns. A supply pipe 17 has a branch pipe 18 at its top which conimunicates with the tank 15, inwardly opening .valves 19 being provided for the points of communication. A pump 20 is connected with the pipe 17 and with the driving mech anism of the automobileas shown at 21 to supply the tank 15 with air. A cover 22 is hinged at 22 for movement into and out of position to extend over the keyboard 13 and when in such position forms with the back 14, a rearwardly faced seat upon which a cushion 23 is located when the musical apparatus is not in use. It will thus be seen that a structure is provided including two oppositely disposed seats having spaced backs between which the horns are arranged, the bottom of one of the seats having a keyboard mounted therein.

In Figs. 6 and 7 there is shown a form of the invention in which the horns are located at the rearward portion of the machine, the rear seat being shown at 25. This seat 25 has two rearwardly projecting vertically extending end boards 26 having curved guide grooves 29 therein which receive a section roll 30. Cords 31 are secured to this closure and extend upwardly and over pulleys 32 carried by the seat 25. The cords pass downwardly over the pulleys 32 and around the pulleys 33 mounted in the lower portion of the seat, from which they pass upwardly over the outer face of the closure 30 being again attached to the upper edge of the closure. Then the closure is to be drawn into operative position the cords 31 are drawn downwardly over the pulleys 32 as will be understood. Gains 34: are arranged for operation to bear against the cords as they contact with the pulleys 32, these cams being thus disposed to hold the closure in operative position. As shown in the drawings, the horns 16 in this form of the invention are located within the inclosure formed by the end boards 26, a suitable casing 26 being connected therewith, as shown. In this form of the invention it will be understood that the horns are connected with the keyboards as before described. The horns extend laterally between the backs 11 and 14; and then downwardly at the sides of the car as shown at 35, and thence to the rearward portion of the car as indicated in the diagrammatic view of Fig. 8.

It will of course be understood that various stops, swells, etc., used in connection with pipe organs may be employed in the present invention.

What is claimed is 1. In an automobile the combination with front and rear seats, said front seat including aseat proper and a back, of a keyboard located rearwardly of the front seat and in position to be reached by an occupant of the rear seat, a second back located in spaced relation to the back of the front seat, horns connected with the keys of the keyboard and extending between the two backs, a closure movable into and out of position to cover the keyboard, said closure lying horizontally when in operative position and a seat cushion arranged to be disposed upon the closure.

2. In an automobile the combination with front and rear seats, said front seat including a seat proper and a back, of a keyboard located rearwardly of the front seat and in position to be reached by an occupant of the rear seat, a second back located in spaced relation to the back of the front seat, horns connected with the keys of the keyboard and extending between the two backs, a closure movable into and out of position to cover the keyboard, said closure lying horizontally when in operative position a seat cushion arranged to be disposed upon said closure, an air tank located below the keyboard, said horns communicating with the air tank and means connected with the driving mechanism of the automobile for storing air in the tank.

3. In an automobile the combination with oppositely faced seats including spaced backs of horns extending between the backs, an air supply communicating with the horns and a keyboard incorporated in the bottom of one of the seats and arranged to control the admission of air to the horns.
