ASH-SIFTER.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN F. Norfrn1 a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlfhis invention relates more particularly to that class of ash-sifters which are adapted to be placed upon a barrel or other receptacle and which has an inclosed container for holding and supporting the ashes.
The primary obj ect of the invention is to provide an ash-sifter which will effectually separate the ashes from the coal and which will be so constructed as to be easily and conveniently operated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dust proof sifter in which the dust arising from the ashes will not leave the receptacle.
With these and other objects in View the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out /in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
10 designates a circular base provided with a depending flange 11, said base being adapted to rest upon a barrel or other receptacle 12, the flange 11 being arranged to retain the same on the barrel. The member 10 is provided with a squared opening 13 and adjacentsaid opening are the members 14, 15, 16 and 17 which form a substantially rectangular boX or frame. A shaft 18 eX- tends through the members 15 and 17 and is adapted to reciprocate. The means for reciprocating said shaft consists of the member 19 which is pivotally secured at 20 to a support 21. A portion of this member is adapted to form a handle 22, and the end portion of said member is adapted to enter a conical opening 23 in the shaft 18. It will therefore be seen that as the handle 22 is raised and lowered on its pivot 20 the rod 18 will be recprocated, said shaft being provided with a pin 24 which will limit the movement of said shaft.

walls at 25, and to each of these members is pivotally secured supporting devices 26 and 27, said supporting devices consisting of a wire member, the free ends of which are coiled about a pin 28 which extends transversely through the shaft 18, the central portion of said member being coiled around the member 25 at the points 29, the other end of said members being upturned to support the side walls of a sifter 30. It will therefore be seen that as the shaft 18 is reciprocatcd the members 25 will be swung on their pivots through the medium of the links or supports 26 and 27. It will also be noted that as the members 25 are rocked the portions 31 and 32 will also be given a rocking motion, that is when the sifter approaches the wall 15, the portion 32 will be raised and the portion 31 lowered. In this manner the constant reciprocation of the shaft will impart a rocking motion to the sifter 30 which is adapted to rest upon the members 31 and 32. As the shaft 18 is reciprocated the sifter 30 will not only be rocked but the same will travel with the shaft and the two motions combined will agitate the contents of the sifter to such an extent that the same will be thoroughly sifted and the finer particles will drop within the barrel 12. It will be noted that when the device is in the position shown in the drawing the sifter 30 will rest not only upon the portions 31 and 32 of the members 26 and 27 but the same will also be supported by the members 25. rIhe bent up portions 33 and 34E will prevent the sifter from leaving the members 25, 31 and 32 but at the same time there will be suflicient play between the side walls of the sifter and the members 33 and 34C as at 34X to allow said sifter to move freely upon the portions 31 and 32 of the members 26 and 27. rlhe arrangement of the various parts is such that the same may be repaired and replaced with very little trouble and it will be seen that this arrangement produces a neatand compact structure which will be economical to manufacture.
The device may be cheaply constructed of wood or the same may be formed of sheet metal.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device of the class described, comprising a base member adapted to support ends of said members being secured to said pin, the other ends of said members terminating in a means for supporting the edge portions of the sifter.

A device of the class described, comprising a base member, a rectangular frame located upon said base member, a shaft adapted to reciprocate within said frame, members pivoted to the side walls of said frame, a pin passing through the central portion of said shaft each of said pivoted members being' provided with a link adapted to connect the same with said pin, a sifter, said links and said pivoted members being adapted to support the sifter.

A device of the class described, comprising a base member, a rectangular frame formed upon said base member, a pair of U-shaped members pivotally hung within the said frame member, a shaft adapted to reciprocate within said frame, members pivotally connecting said pivoted members to a receptacle, a sifter located within said receptacle and a shaft adapted to reciprocate within the receptacle, rocking means pivoted to said shaft adapted to loosely support said sifter whereby on the reciprocation of said shaft a longitudinal and a rocking motion is imparted to said sifter.

A device of the class described, com` prising a base member adapted to support a receptacle, members pivoted to the side walls of said receptacle, a sifter loosely supported on said members within said receptacle, and means for swinging said members on their pivots and thereby imparting a longitudinal and rocking movement to said sifter.
