Be it knownthat I,- GEORGE F. CARD, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of st Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recording Devices, ofwhich the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in recording devices. The objects of this invention are, first, to provide a recording, device which shall indicate the starting and stopping of a machine and the time of its operation. Second, to provide a recording device embodying the above advantages which is simple in structure and operation and not likely to get out of repair.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention ,by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and point .ed out in the claims.

the record sheet- Cis visible from the outside. A suitable clock mechanism, as B- which is here shown in conventional form as a spring driven clock niechanism-is provided. It is preferable that this clock mechanism should revolve the shaft B once an hour. A record sheet C is detachably se-- cured upon the shaft B by a suitable thumbnut 6 (see Fig. 4), so that the record sheet is revolved with the shaftf- This record sheet is preferably circular in form and is ruled to form radial minute spaces, -there being sixty lines upon the sheet. The sheet is also preferably provided with radially ar ranged hour spaces and hour indicating characters, the sheet herein shown having hour indicating characters from 6 a. in. to 8 p. in.
The record sheet is held in position for the-marker by a bracket-like support 1) arranged to the rear thereof. An arm D coacts with the rest D in preventing the vibration of the sheet. Bracket-like guides D are also provided for the sheet. These guides are provided with slits into which the edge of the record sheet projects.
Arranged below the clock mechanism in the casing is a bracket-like frame E. Arranged in this frame E is an electro-magnet E and the frame F for the armature F. The frame F is pivoted to the frame E by the pivot screws f. The armature is held normally -out of contact with the magnets by a spring, as 7". A set screw 'f is provided for limiting the upward movement of the armature carrying frame.
The pivoted marker carrying arm G is mounted upon the bracket on a suitable pivot, as the screw 9''. A spring 9 puts tension on the arm G to hold it normally in toward or against the record sheet or disk, and also tends to hold the same radially outward, as is hereinafter described. The armature frame F is pivoted at f on the bracket E, the axis of the pivots being at right angles to the pivot g, and this frame is arranged to press against the arm G to lift it away from the face of the record sheet or disk and permit the same to swing freely radially across the record disk. Upon the upper end of the arm G I seeurethe marker, which preferably consists of'the fluid receptacle, having a spout-shaped pen G thereon. This ,is preferably made of one piece of sheet metal. pen is thrown into contact with the record sheet by the action of the spring g. 'As the record sheet is revolved by the clock mechanism, the record is made by the marker contacting with the disk while the disk is in motion, and the marker arm, by the mechanism hereinafter described, is drawn gradually to the center of the disk, making a long record by a spiral line on a single sheet. This radial movement of the marker I preferablyaccomplish by means of a cord H, which is secured to thearm G by a spring clip 71, the cord being wrapped around the shaft B of the clock mechanism, so that, as the shaft is revolved the arm is drawn in-- wardly thereby. This makes the record in the form of a spiral, with breaks therein 'whenever the machine whose operation is being recorded, is stopped. A weight, as H, is suspended from the cord H to apply sufiicient tension so that the cord will not slip on the shaft.
The hour spaces marked on the record sheet correspond to the inward movement of the arm G during each revolution of the shaft, so that the record lines properly correspond with the hour. A spring 9" holds the arm normally outward against the pull of the cord H.
The spring clip 71. is provided for fastening the cord H to the arm G, so that in the event of the clock not being stopped when the arm reaches the limit of its inner movement, the clip will release the arm so that no damage will be done to the apparatus.
The magnet E- is provided with an electrical connection to the machine, the operation of which is to be recorded. I hai e indicated in conventional form an electric motor I as being the machine, the operation of which is to be recorded, and 2' indicates the switch for turning the current oli and on.
In the structure illustrated, I show the magnet connected direct to the motor, so
that when the current is on the motor it will also be on the magnet. It is evident, however, that other connections might be made, the object being to electrify the magnet E when the machine is started. When my improved recording device is used in connectionrwith a mechanically operated machine, it will be necessary to provide a. battery or other electrical" supply. As the arrangement of this will readily ap ear to one skilled in the art, I have not erein illustrated the same. By thus arranging and connecting my improved recording device to the machine, the operation of which it is desired to record, when the machine is started the recording pen will be thrown into contact with the record sheet by means'of the magnet and held there until the machine is stopped, recording the period of time of the operation of the machine and indicati all stops. This can be-quickly seen at a g ance from an inspection of the record sheet.
I preferably arrange the recording device in the office or other convenient place for the inspection of the proper persons. It is evident, however, that it may be arranged in any position desired.
By my improved recordin device, the exact time of starting a mac me is indicated, and also all stops, as stated. This furnishes complete data for the computation of cost on piece work, tool charges, tool depreciation, etc. It also enables the determination of the merits of each 0 ,erator.
.'It is intended that the cloc shall be stopped and started at the be inning and end of each day, a brake, as J? being provided for this purpose. This brake is arranged to engage the clock mechanism. However, this may be used or not, as desired.
My improved recording device requires practically no attention other than the changing of the record sheets. If it is desired, the sheets may be filed, thereby furnishing a complete record of the work of any particular machine.
I have illustrated and described my improved recording device in detail in the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and economy. I am aware, however, that it may be varied very greatly in structural details without depart-- ing from my invention, and I claim the same specifically, as here illustrated, as well as broadly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is: I
1. The combination with a machine, the operation of which it is desired to record, of a clock mechanism; a stop device for said clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereon r .iled to form radial minute spaces and radially arranged hour spaces, said hour spaces being provided with proper designating numerals; a support for the said record sheet, arranged at the rear thereof; guides for said rec-"d sheet having slits adapted to receive the edge thereof; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frame therefor; a s'w mg for holding said armature normally out of contact with said electro-magnet; an arm arranged in contact with said armature carrying frame; a marker carried thereby arranged to contact with the record sheet when the armature carrying frame is actuated; a cord for moving said marker carrying arm laterally, connected thereto by a spring clip, said cord being wrapped about the said shaft; a weight for applying tension to said cord; a spring for holding said marker carrying arm normally outward; and electrical connections for said electro-magnet to said machine whereby said magnet is electrified when said machine is in operation, all coacting for the purpose specified.

nected thereto by a spring clip, said cord being wrapped about the said shaft; a weight for applying tension to said cord; a spring for holding the said marker carrying arm normally outward; and electrical connections for "said electro-magnet to said machine, whereby the said magnet is electrified when said "machine is in operation, all coacting for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a machine, the operation of which it is desired to record, of a clock mechanism; a stop device for said clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereon ruled to form radial minute spaces and radially arranged hour spaces, said hour spaces being provided with proper designating numerals; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frame therefor; a spring for holding said armature normally out of contact with said electro-magnet; an arm arranged in contact with said armature carrying frame; a marker carried thereby, arranged to contact with the record sheet when the armature carrying frameis actuated; a cord for moving said marker carrying arm laterally, connected thereto by a spring clip, said cord being wrapped about said shaft; a Weight for applying tension to said cord; a spring for holding said marker carrying arm normally outward; and electrical connections for said electro-magnet to spaces being provided with proper designating numerals; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frametherefor; a spring for holding said armaturenor mally out of contact with said electro-magnet; an arm pivoted on said armature carrying frame; a marker carried thereby, arranged to contact with said record sheet when the armature carrying frame is actuated; a cord for moving said marker arm laterally, connected thereto by a spring clip, said cord being wrapped about the said shaft; a weight for applying tension to the said cord; a spring for holding said marker carrying arm normally outward;"and'electrical connections. for said electro-magnet to said machine, whereby said magnet is electrified when said machine is in operation, all coacting for the purpose specified.

6. The combination with a machine, the ope 'ation of which it is desired to record, of a clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereon; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frame therefor; an arm 'arranged to contact with said armature carrying frame; a marker carried thereby arranged to contact with the record sheet when the armature carrying frame is actuated; a cord for moving said-marker carrying arm laterally. vrapped about the said shaft; a spring for holding said marker carrying arm normally outward; and electrical connections for said electro-magnetto said machine whereby purpose specified.
7. The combination of a machine, the operation of which it is desired to record, ofa clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a. record sheet thereon ruled to form radial minute spaces and radially arranged hour spaces, said hour spaces being provided with proper designating numerals; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frame; an arm arranged to contact with said armature carrying frame; a marker carried thereby arranged to contact with the record sheet when the armature carrying frame is actuated; a cord for removing said marker carrying arm laterally, wrapped about the said shaft; and electrical connections for said electromagnet to said machine, whereby said magnet is electrified when said machine is in operation, for the purpose specified.

The combination with a machine, the operation of which it is desired to record, of a clock mechanisman hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereon; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frame therefor; an arm arranged to contact rying frame; a marker carried thereby, arranged to cont-act with the record sheet when the armature carrying frame is actuated; a cord for moving said marker carrying arm laterally, wrapped about the said shaft; and electrical connections for said electro-magnet to said machine whereby said magnet is electrified when taid machine is in operation, for the purpose specified.
9. The combination with a machine, of a clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereonruled to form radial minute spaces and radially arranged hour spaces, said hour spaces being provided with proper designating numerals; an electro-magnet; an armature; a pivoted carrying frame therefor; an arm controlled by said armature carrying frame; to contact with the record sheet when the armature carrying frame is actuated; connections for said arni to said clock mechanism whereby said arm is shifted; and means for electrifying said electro-magnet upon the starting of the machine, for the purpose specified.

The combination with a machine, of a clock mechanism; a record sheet carrier actuated thereby; an electro-magnet; an armature; a marker actuated by said armature; connections for said marker to said clock mechanism whereby said marker is shifted on said record. sheet; and means for electrifying said magnet upon the starting of said machine, for the purpose specified.
13. The combination with a machine, the operation of which it is desired to record, of a clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereon ruled to form minute spaces and radially arranged hour spaces, said hour spaces being provided with proper designating numerals; a marker; an electrical device for actuating said marker; a cord for moving said marker laterally, wrapped about the said shaft; and electrical connections for said marker actuating device to said machine, for the purpose specified.
14. The combination with a machine, the operation of which it isdesircd to record, of a clock mechanism; an hourly revolving shaft driven thereby, having a record sheet thereon; a marker; an electrical device for actuating said marker; a cord for moving said marker laterally, wrapped about the said shaft; and electrical connections for said marker actuating device to said machine, for the purpose specified.
