Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs KEITH and CHARLES TUSON, subjects of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Ventilators of the kind in which a motor driven fan is arranged in an opening in the roof of a railway carriage, ships cabin or other rapidly moving body to discharge through a casing to the atmosphere; and it consists of an improved construction or arrangement wherein a volute type of fan case is fitted with a directing vane and mounted on ball bearings so that it may act as a cowl turning freely round a fan runner so as to discharge in the direction of the outside current of air whereby the surfacing action of the wind is overcome.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a part elevation, part vertical section, of the improved ventilator as applied to the roof of a railway carriage. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the fan runner A is driven by an electro-motor B carried by an open framing C supported by a flange D around the opening E in the roof F, and on this flange D is formed a race Gr containing balls G which serve as a bearing for the volute fan case H which is free to swivel around the axis of the fan runner A, being turned by the action of the wind on a guide vane I upon its upper side in line with the discharge outlet K. The fan runner A is carried by a spindle L driven by the motor B and is supported on a foot-step M hearing at the base of the open framing C and in a neck bearing N coaxial with the ball bearing for the swiveling cowl or fan case H.
Having now described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A ventilator comprising in combination, a fan runner, a motor for driving said runner, an open framing for supporting the motor, ball bearings arranged in the upper end of said framing, and a volute fan case mounted on said ball bearings and adapted to swivel around the axis of said fan runner.
2. A ventilator comprising in combination, a fan runner, a motor for driving said runner, an open framing for supporting the motor, ball bearings arranged in the upper end of saidframing, a volute fan case mounted on said ball bearings and adapted to swivel around the axis of said fan runner, and a vane for controlling the position of the casing.
