To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST LAUBSOHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Gum-Roll Governor for Envelop-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in envelop-machines and particularly to the gum-roll mechanism of such machines, and comprises means for automatically interrupting the operation of the gum-transferring roll when the elevator is lowered or dropped so that the taking up of gum by the roll is temporarily suspended, and means for automatically starting the gum-roll at the proper time, as aftera new pile of envelop blanks has been supplied to the elevator, together with such parts and combinations of parts as may be required in carrying said invention into effect, all as hereinafter set forth.
The object of my invention is to provide a governor, for the gum-roll-actuating mechanism, which prevents the gum-roll from reciprocating while the elevator is lowered for the purpose of receiving more envelop blanks, and permits the gum-roll to recommence its motion upon the raising of said elevator to bring the blanks thereon into the field of action of the pickers, etc., whereby a considerable saving in envelops is effected, that is, the number of perfect envelops turned out by a machine equipped with this governor is increased, for reasons which will presently be made plain.
A further object is to produce a comparatively simple but practicable and efficient governor of the class specified, which is both strong and positive.
In the absence of a governor for the gumroll the latter reciprocates the same when there are no envelop blanks to receive the adhesive material or gum from the pickers to which said gum is transferred from such roll as when said gum is regularly deposited on said blanks, hence an excessive quantity of gum accumulates on the roll and on the pickers at the time the elevator is lowered for an additional supply of blanks and an extra quantity of gum is transferred to the flaps of the first few blanks on top of the Specification of Letters Patent.

pile when such pile is raised into working position, which necessitates the rejection of a like number of envelops as defective. An extra amount of gum will be deposited on the fiaps until the excessive amount on the roll or on the roll and pickers, accumulated during the time required to lower the elevator, place a new pile of blanks thereon and raise the same, becomes exhausted, the objectionable transfer of surplus gum to the blanks necessarily continuing until the quantity of gum on the transferring members diminishes sufiiciently to restore such members to normal condition and bring about the transfer of gum to the flaps in the proper manner.
My invention entirely obviates the difliculty and removes the objection just pointed out.

Generally my invention consists of controlling or governing means for the pasteroll or gum-roll whenever the elevator is raised from or dropped to its low position, to the end that the action of the gum-roll is stopped each time said elevator is dropped and said gum-roll is set in motion each time the elevator is again raised, that is, such means or governor is automatically operated by the elevator and in turn throws out the gum-roll-actuating mechanism when the elevator is lowered or dropped and permits said mechanism to resume its normal action or function only when the elevator is raised above a certain point, wherefore the gumroll is inactive all the time that the elevator is down and is itself inactive; and specifically my invention consists of a certain peculiar connecting bar or link in the gumroll-aetuating mechanism, and of locking and releasing mechanism, for said link, dependent for operation or action upon the I elevator and the position of the same, to-
gether with subsidiary and auxiliary parts or members, including, of course, so much of the old machine as is necessary to the successful operation of the new features.
Before proceeding to describe my invention in detail, as illustrated in the drawings, I will first briefly mention the old parts of the envelop machine therein appearing, more or less of which are needed in connection with said invention, and explain the same so far as it seems necessary or desirable to do so.
Portions of a table 1, an end standard 2, a front arch 3 and a rear arch 4 are shown. At 5 is one of a pair of pickers attached to the base of a vertical rod 6 arranged to reciprocate through the arch 3. The front guide-rod 7, for the corresponding slide 9 of the gum-roll 10, is supported by horizontal arms 1111 extending forward from the arch 4 and hangers 1212 depending from the front ends of said arms. Suitabl journaled below the table 1 is a rock-sha t 13 to which are rigidly attached two upwardly-extending actuating arms for the gum-roll 10, one such arm only being shown at 14, and a laterally-extending arm 15. Each arm 14 is connected with the corresponding gum-roll slide 9 by a rod 16. 17 is a camand spring-actuated arm for imparting motion to the rock-shaft 13, such arm having its rear terminal pivoted at 18 to the standard 2. A gum-box 19, for the gum-roll 10, is upheld by a bracket 20 fastened to one leg of the arch 3. Fastened to the underside of the table 1 is an elevator frame 21 in which an elevator 22 is the elevator 22. On the front terminal of the shaft 25 is a ratchet-wheel 28 and a hand-wheel 29. A detent 30, for the ratchetwheel28, is pivoted at 31 to the adjacent part of the frame 21, and a spring 32 normally draws said detent into engagement with said ratchet-wheel. On the front edge of the frame 21 is a lifter-bar 33 having a limited vertical movement and carrying an actuating pawl 34 normally pressed into engagement with the ratchet-wheel '28 by means of a spring 35 also on said lifter-bar. At the upper end of the lifter-bar 33 are a depressor plate 36 and a hook 37. The lifterbar is tensioned upward by a spring 38. A rock-shaft 39, suitably mounted in front of the table 1 and above the plane thereof, carries two paper fingers 40 and a lifter 41. One of the fingers 40 is located above the lifter-bar 33 and has a depressor 42 adapted to act on the depressor plate 36. The lifter 41 extends backward beneath the hook 37.
When the machine is in operation, the rock-shaft 39 is rocked forward through the medium of a cam and backward through the medium of a spring, neither of which are shown since they are old and well known and do not enter into intimate association with my invention, hence the fingers 40 are carried downward under the influence of a spring and the lifter 41 is carried upward under the influence of a cam, therefore in practice the lifter-bar 33 is alternately depressed by the finger which has the depressor 42 and elevated by the lifter. Now when the fingers 40 rock downward they encounter the blanks 24 and are checked thereby, and the lifter-bar 33 will be forced down, a ainst the resiliency of the spring 38, by its finger and depressor to whatever extent said blanks will permit, which may or may not be suflicient to enable the pawl 34 to engage a lower tooth on the ratchet-wheel 28. The lifter 41 next raises the lifter-bar either without causing the position of the elevator 22 to be changed or else rotating the ratchet-wheel the distance between two teeth and raising said elevator accordingly, the result depending, of course, on whether or not the last downward movement of said lifter-bar was suflicient for a reengagement between the pawl 34 and said ratchet-wheel. Usually some ten or twelve blanks are gummed and removed from the platform 23 before the movement permitted the fingers 40 is enough to bring about a readjustment of the elevator, or in other words, to raise or advance said elevator one step. In this way, after the machine has been set in motion with a stack of blanks on the elevator platform, the elevator travels upward intermittently until the last blank is removed therefrom. The hand-wheel 29 is used to raise the elevator with a pile of blanks thereon until the uppermost blank is in range of the pickers. By pressing downward on the tail 43 of the detent 30 both said detent and the pawl 34 may be disengaged from the ratchet-wheel 28, when the elevator 22 drops to its lowest position, the base of the rack 27 coming to rest at the bottom of the recess 44, Figs. 4 and 5, in the bottom cross-piece 45 of the frame 21. The pawl 34 is disengaged with and by the detent 30 because the latter, when actuated out of engagement with the ratchetwheel, encounters said pawl and forces it out of such engagement also.
I will now take up the new features of the machine. To the pawl and ratchet mechanism for the elevator I add two pivotally connected links 46 and 47 and an operating lever or arm 48 attached to the link 47. The link 46 has one end pivoted to the tail43 of the detent 30, and the link 47 has one end pivoted to an adjacent part of the frame 21. This device is of the nature of a toggle-joint and may be so constructed that when the links are straightened to throw out the detent and pawl, as in Fig. 1, they are automatically locked against further movement outward, or a pin 49 projecting from the frame 21 may be provided to bring about the desired result, which is to cause the disengagement of the detent and pawl from the ratchet-wheel to continue until the links are moved inward by hand to permit the reengagement of the ratchet members to take place. The free end of the pin 49 lies in the path of the tail 43 and receives said tail as soon as the links 46 and 47 are straightened, thereby checking further movement of all of the parts in the several directions given them by the upward pressure on and movement of the arm 48 which brought about the straightening of said links. The detent and pawl are released to the action of the spring 32 and permitted to ree'ngage the ratchetwheel by pressing down the arm 48.
As a substitute for the ordinary connecting-rod between the rocker arms 17 and 15 I make use of a connecting bar or link 50 pivoted at its base at 51 to the front end of said arm 17 and having an angular slot 52 in its upper part for the pivot pin 53 which forms the connection between said link and said arm 15. In the edge of the link 50 which is adjacent to the standard 2 is a slot, recess or indentation 54. A spring 55 extends between the top of the link and a post 56 rising from the table 1. A check spring 57 is fastened at one end to the table and extends downward over the arm 15 and is so formed and positioned as to receive the outer terminal of said arm at the end of its upward stroke or travel.
The formation of the slot 52 in the link 50 is such that when the pin 53 is in the longitudinal part of the slot said link can be reciprocated freely without oscillating the arm 15, but when said pin is in the transverse part of the slot the reciprocating link imparts an oscillating movement to said arm.
Securely bolted to the standard 2 and the elevator frame 21, or otherwise supported between them, is a bracket 58 which carries -most of the members of the locking and releasing mechanism for the link 50, which mechanism in the present case comprises a thrust-rod 59, a drive-rod 60, a connecting bar '61 for such rods, and a latch 62, all supported by said bracket, and a trip 63 mounted on the face of the elevator 22. The bracket 58 is provided at opposite ends with sleeves 64 and 65 for the thrust-rod 59 and drive-rod 60, respectively, and with a platform 66 for the bar 61. The platform 66 is in reality a forwardly-extending part of the bracket 58 provided for the bar 61 which is adapted to slide laterally thereon or between the longitudinal edges thereof. The sleeve 65 is situated on the right-hand side of the platform 66 at the front end and limits the movement to the right of the bar 61. The inner terminal of the thrust-rod is received into the bar 61 and adjustably held therein by means of a bolt 67 entering the rear end of said bar, and the drive-rod which is parallel with said thrust-rod extends through the bar and is adjustably held therein by means of a bolt 68 entering the front end of the bar. A spring 69, encircling the thrust-rod and bearing between a shoulder 70 in the sleeve 64 and the adjacent side of the bar 61, normally forces said bar to the right or inward against the sleeve 65 l and thus keeps said'thrust-rod in its inward or retracted position. When the parts are in the position just described the right-hand or inner end of the drive-rod, which is beveled from above downward to the right, projects beyond the inner face of the sleeve 65 into the path of the upper cross-piece 71 of the elevator or of a plate 72 on the back of said cross-piece. The lower edge of the plate 72 is beveled to correspond with the beveled end of the drive-rod. The latch 62 is pivoted at 73 to the back edge of the sleeve 65 and the left-hand or outer terminal of said latch, which is received into a suitable recess 74 (Fig. 8) in the platform 66, is provided with an upwardly-extending pin 75. A spring 76, between a connection on the side of the latch at the right of the pivot 73 and a connection on the cross-piece 45 below, tensions the outer terminal of said latch upward. The inner terminal of the latch projects into the path of the trip 63.
Said trip is pivoted at 77 to the face of the rear side of the elevator and the front part of the trip extends forward into the open space in said elevator. A spring 78, between the rear end of the trip and a connection on the elevator above the pivot 77, normally tensions such rear end upward into contact with a pin 79 set into said elevator above the latch and between said pivot and the point of connection of the latch with said spring, whereby the latch is normally retained in a substantially horizontal position. The arrangement of parts is such that the outer terminal of the thrustrod 59, which passes through the standard 2, is located adjacent to the indentation 54: in the link 50.
Starting with the parts standing as shown in Figs. 1, 7 and 8, the complete operation of the governor and of the other, coacting mechanisms will next be described. The operator, after placing a pile of envelop blanks 24 on the elevator platform 23, presses down the arm 48 to throw in the detent 30 and pawl 34 and quickly rotates the-hand-wheel 29, in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, to raise the elevator 22 until the top of said pile is brought into the field of operation of the fingers 40. The machine immediately commences to gum and remove the blanks from the pile, one at a time, and the operator has nothing to do with the gumming and feeding of the blanks, which is done automatically, but must drop the elevator again when the pile is exhausted or nearly so, as will presently be explained.
l/Vhen the elevator was raised by the handwheel, the plate 72 passed above and out of the way of the drive-rod 60 and directly the trip 63 encountered the latch 62 and, owing to the presence of the pin 79, actuated said latch so as to carry its pin 75 below the upper surface of the platform 66 and release the bar 61, when the spring 69 acted to retract the thrust-rod 59. The movement of the latch is sufficient to allow the trip to pass by after the release of the bar 61 takes place. The locking and releasing mechanism is now disposed as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 1, 5 and 6. At the next upward stroke of the link 50, which reciprocates all the time the machine is in operation, or as soon as the lateral branch of the slot 52 arrived opposite the pivot pin 53, after the thrust-rod 59 was drawn inward, said link is caused to rock upon its pivot pin 51 by the spring 55 and to receive said pin 53 into said lateral branch, as shown in Fig. 2. There now be ing no lost motion, as when the pin 53 was in the longitudinal branch of the slot 52, the link 50 causes the gum-roll 10 to reciprocate, through the medium of the arm 15, rock-shaft 13, arms 14 and rods 16, the gumroll slides 9 traveling on the guide-rods 7. The gum-roll 10 moves from the position which it occupies in Figs. 1 and 2 to that which it occupies in Fig. 3, and back again as the link 50 travels down and up, receiving a supply of gum from the gum-box 19' each time such roll reaches the left-hand end of its travel. As is well understood the gum is transferred to the flaps of the envelop blanks from the gum-roll by means of the pickers. As soon as the arm 15 becomes positively engaged with the, link 50 said arm is drawn away from the spring 57, but it will necessarily be moved in and out of engagement with said spring at each oscillation although at this time the services of the spring are not required.
The releasing mechanism for the link 50 is so constructed and timed to the positioning of the elevator with its pile of blanks by means of the hand-wheel, that the blanks are in place ready to receive the gum by the time the gum-roll is brought into action, regardless of the size of the pile of blanks, provided a little care be exercised by the operator, and in any event the raising of the pile into operative position need not be and, of course, should not be delayed long enough to allow the gum-roll to accumulate a sufficient amount of gum to spoil even one envelop. The elevator continues to move upward under the influence of the lifter-bar until the pile of blanks on the platform 23 has disappeared or it is desired to replenish the same, when the operator raises the arm 48 and permits said elevator to drop. The dropping of the elevator instantly brings about a cessation of motion on the part of the gum-roll and, under the present arrangement, causes such roll to be left idle at the end of its path of travel which is opposite the gum-box, although it might not always be necessary or desirable to leave it at that place in which event, by slightly changing the arrangement, it could be left at some other point.
When the elevator descends the trip 63 passes freely by the latch 62, the spring 78 yielding for this purpose, but the plate 72 when it encounters the drive-rod 60 forces it to the left against the resiliency of the spring 69, and such rod throws out the thrust-rod 59 by reason of the intervening bar 61 which slides on the platform 66. The bar 61 moves beyond the latch pin 75 which latter immediately rises in front of the adjacent side of said bar, the spring7 6 acting upon the latch 62 for the purpose of bringing about this result. The object of the latch is to hold out the thrust-rod while the elevator is ascending and after the influence of the plate 72 on such rod has been removed, until the pile of blanks is in proper position to begin to receive the gum from the gum-roll.
The throwing out of the thrust-rod 59 produces the desired result in either one of two ways according to the position of the link 50: If the link is at or near the upper end of its stroke, as shown in Fig. 2, the thrust-rod strikes the adjacent edge of said link and forces the link against the resiliency of the spring 55 to the left, resulting in bringing the longitudinal branch of the slot 52- into line with thepin 53, but if the link is at or near the lower end of its stroke, as shown in Fig. 3, said thrust-rod enters the indentation 54k and the forcing to the left of the link occurs when the latter next ascends because the lower edge of said indentation then rides onto the end of the thrust-rod. In the last case, as in the first, the position of the link is so changed as to bring the longitudinal branch of the slot 52 into line with the pin 53, which results in the stopping of the actuating mechanism for the gum-roll between the link and the roll and, of course, of the roll itself, owing to the lost motion of the link relative to the pin 53. Until the thrust-rod is retracted the link will continue to reciprocate without impart-ing motion to other parts, as just stated, since said thrust-rod prevents said link from rocking to receive the pin 53 into the transverse branch of the slot 52 each time the link assumes a position where this operative engagement could take place. It should be understood that the arm 15 must always be released by the link, under the present arrangement, when said arm is at the end of its upward stroke and engaged by the spring 57, which consequently leaves the gum-roll while inactive at the most remote point in its travel from the gum-box. Friction might be depended on to keep the arm 15 up while out of working engagement with the link, but the presence of the spring 57 insures the maintenance of the required condition or position of said arm.
In order to accommodate my governor to machines of different sizes and constructions it may be necessary to change somewhat the positions of the slot and the indentation in the link and to modify their shape more or less, and for the same reason the arrangement and construction of the locking and releasing mechanism for the link may be varied to a greater or less extent, the essential features in such mechanism being the thrust-rod and some means for actuating the same outward when the elevator drops and retracting it when the elevator ascends.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an envelop-machine, the combination, with a paste-roll and means for imparting reciprocating motion to thesame, of a mechanism for interrupting the motion-of the roll-operating mechanism, and an eleva tor-platform provided with means for actuating said interrupting mechanism during the descending and ascending motion of the platform.
2. In an envelop-machine, the combination, with a gum-roll and mechanism for reciprocating the same, of a member arranged for interrupting or restoring the motion of the reciprocating mechanism, and an elevator provided with means for releasing the member from or relocking the same with said reciprocating mechanism.
3. In an envelop-machine, the combination, with a gum-roll, mechanism for operating the same, such mechanism consisting in part of a link adapted to change position in its travel, and further consisting in part of connecting means between said link and other members of said mechanism, said link having changeable engaging means for such connecting means, which engaging means is operative or inoperative according to the aforesaid position of the link, and means to impart motion to the link, of an elevator, and mechanism controlled by said elevator for determining said position of 'said link.
4. In an envelop machine, the combination, with a gum-roll, mechanism for operating the same, such mechanism consistlng 1111 part of a link adapted to change position in its travel, and further consisting in part of connecting means between said link vator ascends.
5. The combination, in an envelop machine, with a gum-roll, mechanism for operating the same, such mechanism consisting in part of a link adapted to change position in its travel and having operative and inoperative engaging means according to the aforesaid position of the link, and furtherconsisting in part of connecting means between said engaging means and said gum roll, and means to impart motion to the link, of an elevator, a thrust-rod arranged to force the link out of active engagement with said connecting means when said elevator descends and to release the link when the elevator ascends, and means controlled by said elevator for so operating said thrust-rod.
6. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with a gum-roll and reciprocating mechanism therefor, of an elevator and means to interrupt the motion of said gumroll when said elevator descends and to restore .such motion when the elevator ascends.
7. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with a gum-roll and reciprocating mechanism therefor, of a rising and falling elevator and means to cause said gum-roll to remain inactive while said elevator is down.
.8. A gum-roll governor, for envelop-machines, comprising, with a gum-roll and an elevator, actuating mechanism for said gumroll, such mechanism including a member provided with a pin, and a link having an angular slot therein for said pin, the link carrying the pin with it when the pin is in one branch of said slot and operating with out the pin when the latter is the other branch of said slot, and locking and releasing means operated by said elevator for said link.
9. A gum-roll governor, for envelop machines, comprising, with a gum-roll and an elevator, actuating mechanism for said gumroll, such mechanism including a member provided with :a pin, and an indented link having an angular slot therein for said pin, the link carrying the pin with it when the pin is in one branch of said slot and operating without moving the pin when the latter is i is in the other branch of said slot, and locking and releasing mechanism operated by said elevator for said link, such locking and releasing mechanism consisting in part of a thrust-rod in operative relation to the indented portion of the link.
11. In an envelop-machine, the combination, with an elevator, step-by-step lifting mechanism therefor, and means for disengaging and reengaging such mechanism, of a gum-roll, reciprocating mechanism therefor, and controlling or governing means for said reciprocating mechanism, such controlling or governing means being dependent for action upon said elevator.
12. The combination, in an envelop-machine, of a gum-roll, reciprocating Inechan ism for said gum-roll, a gumining device, for envelop blanks, adapted to receive gum from such roll and means to produce a lost motion in, said mechanism'and interrupt the 962, use
action of the gum-roll so that it ceases to supply gum to said gumming device.
13. The combination, in an envelop ma chine, with a gum-roll, actuating mechanism for such roll, such mechanism including a member provided witha pin, and also including a link having an angular slot therein to receive said pin and transmit motion to said gum-roll through the intervening parts of the mechanism or permit said roll and intervening parts to remain stationary accord ing to the position of the pin in said slot, means to impart motion to said link, and means to change the position of travel of the link and so change the relation between pin and slot, ozt a gumming device, for en velop blanks, adapted to receive gum from the gum-roll.
14. The combination, in an envelop-inachine, of a link having an angular slot therein, means to reciprocate such link, a gururoll, operating members for said gum-roll between the same and said link, one of such members being provided with a pin adapted to be received into either branch of said slot, and said operating members being actuated or caused to remain stationary according to the position of said pin 'in the slot, and means to change the relation of the link to the pin.
15 The combination, in an envelop-machine, of a link having an angular slot therein, means to reciprocate such link, a gumroll, operating members for said gum-roll between the same and said link, one of such members being provided with a pin adapted to be received into either branch of said slot, and said operating members being actuated or caused to remain stationary ac cording to the position of said pin in the slot, and a thrust-rod arranged to act upon the link and change its relation to the pin.
16. The combination, in an envelop-machine, of a link having an angular slot therein, means to reciprocate such link in piv- .otal connection therewith, yielding means to rock said link on its pivot in one direction, means to forcibly rock the link in the opposite direction, a gum-roll, and operating members for said gum-roll between the same and said link, one of such members being provided with a pin adapted to be received into either branch of said slot, and said operating members being actuated or caused to remain stationary according to the position of said pin in the slot.
17. The combination, in an envelop-machine, of a link having an angular slot and an indentation therein, means to reciprocate such link in pivotal connection therewith, yielding means to rock such link on its pivot in one direction, a thrust-rod located adjacent to said indentation and adapted to forcibly rock the link or cause it to be rocked in the opposite direction and to prevent it from returning to its former position, a gum-roll, and operating members for said gum-roll between the same and said link, one of such members being provided with a pin adapted to be received into either branch of said slot, and said operating members being actuated or caused to remain stationary according to the position of said pin in the slot.
18. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with a gum-roll, of actuating mechanism therefor comprising a rocker arm, a link connected with said rocker arm, means to produce lost motion between said link and arm, and means adapted to hold the arm stationary while the link is running free.
19. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with a gum-roll, of actuating mechanism therefor comprising a rocker arm, a link connected with said rocker arm, means to produce lost motion between said link and arm, and a spring arranged to engage and hold the arm stationary while the link is running free.
20. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with an elevator, and a gum-roll, of a thrust-rod spring-actuated in one direction, means operated by said elevator, when it descends to actuate said thrust-rod against the resiliency of its spring, a link in operative relation to the thrust-rod and adapted to have its position in travel changed thereby, connecting means between said link and said gum-roll, the link having changeable engaging means for said connecting means, which engaging means is operative or inoperative according to the aforesaid position of travel of the link, and means to impart motion to the link.
21. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with an elevator, and a gum-roll, of a thrust-rod spring-pressed in one direction, a drive-rod connected with said thrust-rod and normally extending into the path of said elevator, a link in operative relation to the thrust-rod and adapted to have its position in travel changed thereby, connecting means between said link and said gum-roll, the link having changeable engaging means for said connecting means, which engaging means is operative or inoperative according to the aforesaid position of the link, and means to impart motion to the link.
22. The combination, in an envelop-ina- .chine, with an elevator, and a gum-roll, of
a thrust-rod spring-pressed in one direction, means operated by said elevator when it descends to actuate said thrust-rod against the resiliency of its spring, means operated by said elevator when it ascends to permit said thrust-rod to be released to said spring, a link in operative relation to the thrust rod and adapted to have its position in travel changed thereby, connecting means between said link and said gum-roll, the link having changeable engaging means for said connecting means, which engaging means is operative or inoperative according to the aforesaid position of the link, and means to impart motion to the link.
23. The combination, in an envelop-machine, with an elevator, and a gum-roll, of a thrust-rod spring-pressed in one direction, means operated by said elevator when it descends to actuate said thrust-rod against the resiliency of its spring, locking means for the thrust-rod, means operated by said elevator when it ascends to operate said locking means to release the thrust-rod to its spring, a link in operative relation to the thrust-rod and adapted to have its position in travel changed thereby, connecting means between said link and said gum-roll, the link having changeable engaging-means for said connecting means, which engaging means is operative or inoperative according to the aforesaid position of the link, and means to impart motion to the link.
24. The combination, in an envelop machine, with an elevator provided with a trip, and a gum-roll, of a thrust-rod springpressed in one direction, a drive-rod con' nected with said thrust-rod and normally extending into the path of said elevator, a latch extending into the path of said trip and adapted to lock the parts when operated to throw the thrust-rod outward, a link in operative relation to the thrust-rod and adapted to have its position in travel changed thereby, connecting means between said link and said gum-roll, the link having change-
