REGULATING APPARATUS FOR HOT-WATER PIPES AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT BRo'KnNHAUs, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Haspe, near Hagen, Province of Westphalia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulating Apparatus for Hot-Water Pipes and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a regulating apparatus for hot water pipes and the like, by means of which a valve or other suitable organ is moved by an expansion pipe, in order to alter the section of air inlet channels, so that the fire of the boiler isinfluenced and hot water or steam is produced more quickly or slowly, according to whether said expansion pipe is contracted or expanded. Heretofore such apparatus were secured to the boiler by a nut provided on the limb projecting into the interior of said boiler, and the whole apparatus had to be turned when being fitted in or taken out. In most boilers there is not sufficient room for that purpose, because the expansion pipe is provided between the pipe-mains leading from and to the boiler. The regulator must therefore always be screwed into position before said pipes are attached. If it be desired to remove the regulator, owing to its not being in proper order, this is only possible after removing the pipe-mains which is a very inconvenient and expensive operation. This drawback is overcome according to the present invention by securing the regulator by means of a screw attachment provided loosely on the immersed limb of Said screw attachment consists of a sleeve and sleeve nut. After screwing said sleeve into the boiler the limb of the expansion pipe is passed through the same and secured by the sleeve nut which presses a collar on said limb against the sleeve. In attaching and detaching this device it is not necessary to turn the same so that it can be used in a narrow space without regard to the pipe-mains.
In order to obtain a tight joint with the least expenditure of material, the expansion pipe has a circular section where it enters the boiler and its oval section commences at the resilient part behind the bend. The circular section of the free limb yields the further advantage that the bend of the expansion pipe does not need to be strengthened as heretofore, because it oflers sufficient resistance.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows, partly in section, one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section at the line A-B of Fig. 1, while Fig. 3 is a cross section at the line OD of said Fig. 1. Fig. 4 illustrates the relation of my improvements to a boiler and to a device controlled by the expansion pipe.
A sleeve, a, may be secured in any manner (for instance, by screwing to a boiler, as shown in Fig. 4), and through this sleeve there is passed a circular end 6 of the expansion pipe 0, having an oval section as shown in Fig. 8. On the part b, the sleeve nut (Z is loosely fitted, said nut having an inner flange e, which is pressed against a collar on the pipe I) so that said collar is presse against the sleeve a. In order to improve the joint a washer g is provided between the collar and sleeve. On the nut d is placed the ring h, or the like, secured in position by a screw 2'. To said ring it is fastened, by the bolt Z, a right angular arm m terminating in a fork m. In this fork is fitted a lever p, which is connected by the rod 0 with the free end of the expansion pipe 0. To the other end of said lever p, is attached a chain, 9, which serves to move the damper, m, or air valve, and the like. Owing to the pivotal connection of the lever m and ring or the like it all strain and jarring in the joints of the levers are avoided. Moreover the chain can always act at right angles to the air Valve or the like of the boiler.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination, a steam boiler and a sleeve secured thereto, a U-shaped expansion pipe having its lower end passing through the sleeve and extending into the boiler and formed of circular cross section for rotation within the sleeve, the expansion pipe above the sleeve being of non-circular cross section, an adjustable sleeve nut for clamping the sleeve into gripping engagement with a portion of the expansion pipe passing therethrough, and means connected with the expansion pipe, for controlling a valve or damper.
